AGNA COLLECTION FOR PUERTO RICO AT TODAY’S ASSEMBLY! MANY thanks to all those who contributed to the collection we took for earthquake relief in Puerto Rico – the total was $397.29! It has been sent to Brigada Solidaria de Oeste and received with many thanks! NEW FLAG WILL BE FLYING! During last week’s MLK, Jr. assembly I showed a small version of the African American flag that I had purchased at the Smith College Art Museum as part of the exhibit at the museum from the Studio School of Harlem (NYC). I mentioned that it would be great to have a flag pole size version to fly outside our school. MANY thanks to Ms. Bredin for making my wish come true – and it’s now flying in front of our school to coincide with African American History Month too! Here’s a bit of history about the flag for those who don’t know: The African-American flag was designed and created by African American artist David Hammons in 1990. In that same year, the first black mayor of New York and America at large, David Dinkins, was sworn into office. The flag is noted as the most significant piece done by the artist to mark his undying commitment to Civil Rights and the Black Power Movement. The artist was inspired by the already existing US flag and the Pan-African flag adopted by the Marcus Garvey Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (ACL) in 1920. The Pan-African flag was created in response to a song that had the line Every Race Has A Flag but the Coon. David successfully fused the two flags to stir up a conversation about the weak history behind the American flag as well as the mixed messages it sends about their history. The designing of the flag was also triggered by the Watts riots which took place in the Watts neighbourhood of Los Angeles from August 11 to 16, 1965. The flag, while seeking unspoken answers to the questionable mistreatment of African-Americans in America, also sends a message about the misunderstanding and double standards as well as duplicity that exist in being black in America. The flag provides a sense of pride and affirms the presence of the African-American in America and that being black and American are the same thing. BLOCKS – THANK YOU! Thank you to the families of Justin Vinsky and Henri Dumont for the donations of blocks! The students/classes who have received them are very happy!! More block donations are always welcome!! MANY thanks to all those who contributed to the collection we took for earthquake relief in Puerto Rico – the total was $397.29! It has been sent to Brigada Solidaria de Oeste and received with many thanks!

NEW FLAG WILL BE FLYING!During last week’s MLK, Jr. assembly I showed a small version of the African American flag that I had purchased at the Smith

College Art Museum as part of the exhibit at the museum from the Studio School of Harlem (NYC). I mentioned that it would be great to have a flag pole size version to fly outside our school. WHEN THE WORLD’S

ON FIREAn Event Commemorating the Career of Gwen Agna

Beloved educator and community leader Gwen Agna has been principal of Jackson Street Elementary School in Northampton, Massachusetts for 24 years. At the end of this school year, she is retiring. In an “evening assembly” convened to commemorate her work, she will join local activist and internationally renowned historian Vijay Prashad to reflect on the past, present, and future of public education in an age of anxiety, to help us understand what has been possible and to imagine what can be possible for educating children. Throughout Gwen and Vijay will reflect on her long career as an educator, and ask what it means to hope while living through an unending battery of crises.

Gwen Agna Longtime education advocate and principal of Jackson Street Elementary School.
