BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS IGGY helps gifted 13-18 year olds to achieve their full potential by offering:

– Challenging educational resources covering a wide range of subjects– A support network of gifted peers, postgraduate student mentors, academics and e-learning experts– Advice about careers, further education and other life skills– Support and advice for homework, exams and university applications– Projects tackling real challenges and issues

IGGY’S EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES IGGY focuses on providing stretching content in Maths, English, Science, History, Politics and Life Skills but also covers a wide range of other subjects, for example, Classics. IGGY content covers a range of formats – from quick interactive quizzes to longer video courses and podcast series.

IGGY offers creative challenges, competitions, quick projects and longer term activities such as the ‘Junior Commission’ – a yearlong research project in which ten IGGY members work together on a specific topic by collaborating online and during overseas study visits.

OUR DEFINITION OF ‘GIFTED’ IGGY does not require students to prove that they are gifted or have a high IQ. Teachers recommend IGGY to students that they believe could benefit from IGGY’s unique educational network. We want students to fulfill their potential, regardless of their proven ability.

HELLO. WE ARE IGGY IGGY is an online educational network created by the University of Warwick that connects and challenges gifted young people from across the world.

“The highlights for me have been hearing about the competitions students have entered and even won, taking them to events at Warwick University, chatting to them about their ideas on how IGGY could develop. In short, it’s seeing with my own eyes the excitement students feel when challenged and stretched and the sheer enjoyment they gain from investigating new things for the sake of it and in their own terms.”

Shelagh Moore, Deputy HeadteacherRugby High School in the UK

“IGGY is like an open door, when you step in you’ve got access to wider knowledge, debates, quizzes, challenges and even Mentors that can help you”

IS IGGY SAFE? Safety is at the heart of IGGY. IGGY is available exclusively to members and IGGY staff; and all staff records are checked by the government, and staff undergo training on safety and moderation, child protection and e-safety.

The site is continually monitored through a combination of advanced word filtering software, human moderation, and self-moderation through reporting buttons.

IGGY works with KOKO (KidsOKOnline) to ensure that the site is a safe environment for teenagers. Due to IGGY’s robust safety processes, sharing and collaboration is encouraged within a safe, secure and age-appropriate environment.

HOW CAN WE JOIN IGGY? IGGY is a subscription service which schools or other organisations can sign students up to. There are free places available on IGGY for students who meet certain eligibility criteria.

The registration process is simple for both teacher and students. IGGY requires teachers to complete a basic template so we can create student login details. Students can then join the IGGY community and take advantage of the challenges and debates.

IGGY SCHOOL CASE STUDY Jewish Community Secondary School, LondonThomas Smith, Gifted & Talented Lead Teacher

We first heard about IGGY through an article in a national publication. We were genuinely captivated by its ability to couple social networking alongside academic activities that inspire and challenge the brightest of students. Within a month of enquiring about the initiative we were hooked on the prospect of introducing IGGY to our school.

At JCoSS, we introduced IGGY to our core Year 8 G&T students this September, with a view to rolling this out further once the programme becomes established. After making the students and parents aware of IGGY we thought it would be a great idea to set up an IGGY parental information evening at JCoSS.

Organised by the ever efficient IGGY team, it was a fantastic opportunity for students and parents to learn about the website functions, its social networking capabilities and, more importantly, specifically how it could benefit their son/daughter academically.

The use of PhD students within IGGY’s academic framework really impressed and captivated the parents into just how academically challenging IGGY can be for their child.

Having been registered for just three weeks now our students have been busy collecting points by completing tasks on the site and all of our students in Year 8 now attend an IGGY lunch time club each Friday.

GETTING STARTED

IGGY CONTENT CASE STUDY A partnership with arctic explorer Mark Wood and Warwick Medical School involved a series of medical science content which explored how extreme exertion and changes in diet affect the human body.

The series included a video documentary of Mark undergoing tests in a human metabolic chamber, facts about the human body presented in an interactive, visually engaging way, and a series of debates.

IGGY sponsored Mark’s attempt to climb Everest, and members entered competitions to ask Mark questions via Skype and to design a flag for him to take to the top top of the mountain. Mark was able to inspire members to realise their potential, as he is an ordinary person who set out to achieve something extraordinary.
