4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Inhalation Move the exposed person to fresh air. If not breathing, clear airways and give artificial
respiration. If breathing is difficult, humidified oxygen should be administered by
qualified personnel. Seek medical attention if breathing difficulties continue.
Eye Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes. Hold eyelids apart to ensure complete
irrigation of the eye. Remove contact lenses, if worn, after initial flushing. Do not use
eye ointment. Seek medical attention.
Skin Remove contaminated shoes and clothing, and flush affected areas with large amounts
of water. If skin surface is damaged, apply a clean dressing and seek medical attention.
If skin surface is not damaged, clean affected area thoroughly with mild soap and water.
Seek medical attention if tissue appears damaged or if pain or irritation persists.
Launder or discard contaminated clothing.
Ingestion Immediately give two glasses of water and induce vomiting. Never give anything by
mouth to an unconscious person.. Seek medical attention.
Notes to The principal effects produced by ethylene glycols, especially by acute overexposure

from swallowing the liquid, are kidney injury and metabolic acidosis. Ethanol is antidotal
and should be administered early in the treatment. Ethanol decreases the metabolism
of ethylene glycol to toxic metabolites. Ethanol should be administered as soon as
possible in the case of severe poisoning since the elimination half-life of ethylene glycol
is 3 hours. The patient should be monitored for metabolic acidosis. Use of appropriate
buffering solutions such as bicarbonate may be indicated. Hemodialysis may be
indicated for more complete elimination.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Fire Fighting Use water spray to cool fire-exposed containers and to protect personnel. Isolate

Coast Guard and Environmental Protection Agency regulations require immediate
reporting of spills/release that could reach any waterway including intermittent dry
creeks. Report spill/release to the National Response Center at (800) 424-8802. In

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling Avoid open heating or agitation that may generate vapors or mists. Bond and ground all
equipment when transferring from one vessel to another. Use non-sparking tools and
explosion-proof equipment.
Storage Use and store this material in cool, dry, well-ventilated areas away from sources of
ignition. Keep away from incompatible material.

Acute Toxicity: Dermal LD50 = 9530 mg/kg (Rabbit) Oral LD50 = 4700 - 13,400 mg/kg (Rat) Carcinogenicity: Ethylene glycol was not carcinogenic in two-year studies in rats and mice. This material is not classified as a carcinogen. Not listed by IARC, NTP or OSHA. Target Organs: If exposures are sufficiently high to cause accumulation of calcium oxalate crystals, kidney pathology may occur. In rats, crystal nephropathy has been seen after dietary administration of 500 mg/kg bwt/day for 16 weeks, whereas no effects were seen in rats that ingested 200 mg/kg bwt/day for 2 years or in several animal species that inhaled 12 mg/m
3 for 3 months. Human
exposures at occupational relevant concentrations are unlikely to cause crystal nephropathy. Developmental: Doses of ethylene glycol that result in high levels of the metabolite glycolic acid induce developmental/teratogenic effects in rats and mice, although at doses greater than those associated with kidney effects in rats. Human exposure is not expected to generate sufficient levels of glycolic acid; therefore, no developmental effects are expected in humans. Mutagenicity: Negative for genotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo tests.
Diethylene Glycol 111-46-6 Acute Data: Dermal LD50 = 11,900 mg/kg (Rabbit) Oral LD50 = 13,300 mg/kg (Mouse); 25,300 mg/kg (Rat) Carcinogenicity: No evidence of carcinogenicity was found with a chronic skin painting study in mice. No carcinogenic or tumor promoting effects in rats exposed up to 2.5% solutions in drinking water for 108 weeks. Older feed studies utilizing limited number of tissues but very high doses also provide no evidence of carcinogenicity. Not listed by IARC, NTP or OSHA. Target Organs: Diethylene glycol given to rats in the diet for two years caused bladder stones, tumors and kidney and liver damage. These effects were probably due to contamination with ethylene glycol and the bladder stones were formed from oxalate crystals. Developmental: Reproductive and developmental effects have been noted in animals following very large (>3000 mg/kg bwt/day) oral doses. However, comparable internal dose levels are not possible with dermal or inhalation exposures under normal conditions of use. Therefore, diethylene glycol is not considered a reproductive or developmental hazard except during very large oral doses.

Undergoes photooxidation with hydroxyl radicals in air with a half-life of 8.3 to 83 hours.
Reported biodegradation studies show ethylene glycol with 97% biodegradation after
20 days and 96% biodegradation after 28 days. Biodegradable under aerobic
conditions. This material is not expected to bioaccumulate.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
This material, if discarded as produced, is not a RCRA "listed" hazardous waste. However, it should be fully characterized for ignitability (D001) prior to disposal (40 CFR 261). Use which results in chemical or physical change or contamination may subject it to regulation as a hazardous waste. Along with properly characterizing all waste materials, consult state and local regulations regarding the proper disposal of this material.
Container contents should be completely used and containers should be emptied prior to discard. Container rinsate could be considered a RCRA hazardous waste and must be disposed of with care and in full compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Larger empty containers, such as drums, should be returned to the distributor or to a qualified drum reconditioner. To assure proper disposal of smaller empty containers, consult with state and local regulations and disposal authorities.
