So they took Him and they crucified Him and on the third day, He did rise. HOPE; our belief, our knowing that he is Risen indeed and lives, truly lives, within each of us; urging us to forgive, leading us to life, breaking open our hardened hearts. Yes, Easter is the greatest feast; the greatest celebration in our spiritual lives – for Easter is the feast of HOPE. When all seemed lost, when the evil that was Calvary seemed supreme, when once again power and corruption seemed invincible; on Easter morning, He rose from the dead, He conquered death, He gave us all the reason never to lose HOPE, never to give in. I live for the day that our boys when asked what Easter is will see beyond the Easter eggs, the holidays, the last warm sun before the Winter and say ‘Easter is why, despite everything, we can smile. From the PrincipalDear Parents and Carers

Thank you for your patience during the recent “weather event”. Our good fortune in being spared the worst of Debbie was not shared with the rest of North Queensland and our thoughts and prayers are with the families that took the brunt of the cyclone. We did endeavour to communicate with parents throughout the period of uncertainty and any feedback about our communication would be most welcome.

As this is the last newsletter before Easter, I would like to finish with an Easter Reflection. To me, Easter is a wonderful expression of HOPE.

The image of a man wanting human rights in China standing in front of a tank in Tiananmen Square was voted as one of the most powerful of the 20th Century as was the image of a little girl putting a flower into the barrel of a National Guardsman’s rifle during the race riots in the USA in the 1960s.

Few speeches are as memorable as Churchill at the height of the Battle of Britain inspiring his fellow Englishmen to “fight them on the beaches” or Martin Luther King’s Lincoln Memorial “I have a dream” speech, knowing full well that his words were signing his own death warrant. What made those images and speeches powerful and memorable was that they gave HOPE.

HOPE is that spark deep within, that small inner voice, that tingling feeling, that resolve to not give in, that choice to not give up, to try again, to believe, to love, to forgive …. Anything that is positive and beautiful in the face of the worst that life can throw at you. HOPE is the hallmark of all people of faith and love, regardless of religion, ethnicity or social standing.

But HOPE is not blind; it is not the blind adherence that a cult demands, nor the unthinking following that turns so many into pawns in cruel wars where religion and race are only masks for greed and ignorance. No HOPE is power in the smallest of feet, the weakest of hands and the seemingly most unimportant of voices as it stands and challenges hate and division and cruelty and greed.

HOPE; that small voice inside you and me when in the face of so much hurt and evil and pain, we believe that love will conquer.HOPE; knowing that life is stronger than death, light more powerful than darkness, love the victor over hate!HOPE has its cousins; faith (belief), love and joy where they are found, God in all the names humans give to Him (Her), is found.

The Jesus story encompassed every reason for anger, cruelty and naked power. This mere carpenter from Nazareth preached of the dignity of all, ate at the home of the sinner, washed the feet of the 12, cleared the Temple and spoke of the hollowness of institutional religion when it serves money, power and greed.

Easter is the reason for it all!”

Yours sincerely

Identity and MissionHoly Week - Joy, Sorrow, Hope! This Sunday sees us as Christians prepare for the Holy Week Triduum. During Holy Week, we celebrate Christ's life and all of the abundant joy that our faith brings us.

We commemorate the times of suffering and hurt that happen in our days, hopefully with a viewpoint of forgiveness and healing.

And on Easter Sunday, we rejoice, full of hope that Jesus is alive, and burns within our hearts as the disciples commented on The Road to Emmaus.

Understanding this dimension of faith is easy for us as it is part of our everyday existence. We can quickly call to mind moments of joy, satisfaction and happiness. Times requiring healing and hurt live in our consciousness calling us to make things right with others. And unbridled hope, optimism and enabling a better tomorrow resonates deep within us all.

In participating in some or all of these Easter Services in our own denominations, we are showing witness to our children that Jesus Matters - Faith Matters! This highpoint of our faith calls us to 'Watch and Pray' with Jesus as we rejoice in Jesus conquering death and showing us the way to live in harmony with each other and in our world.

Catholic Services times can be found by contacting your local Parish or www.tsv.catholic.org

Easter LiturgyOn Wednesday our College Community commemorated The Stations of the Cross. We were led by commentary from our Year 12 students and reflection questions for us to consider by Fr Rod. Our musicians led us to 'Jesus Remember Me, When You Come Into Your Kingdom.' An evocative image of Jesus' Passion and Death came from our Year 10 Drama students who created a shadow box image for each Station of the Cross. Thanks to all for their live contributions in this whole College recognition of the centrality of our faith.

Anzac Day Military Mass - Monday 24 April at 9amThe College will gather for an Anzac Day Military Mass on Monday, 24 April at 9am. Members from 1RAR will be in attendance to contribute to this solemn commemoration. Thanks in advance to Major Brenton Pearce for his attendance and support of this Mass and commemoration. All in the College community are welcome.

Farewell - Adios'For the past - Thanks! For the Future - Yes!' As I finish what seems as an Elijah-type wind here at Ignatius Park, I take this opportunity to thank all for welcoming my family and I to Ignatius Park and to Townsville. As we head home to Sydney to be with family, we leave a town we quickly also called home! The Ignatius Park College Community and our friends in Townsville will live long in our hearts and remain in our prayers. I look forward to returning to IPC for Kairos and the Opening of the College Chapel. I commend in the highest regard the Identity & Mission Team to enable the Catholic dimensions of Ignatius Park in the future. In faith for the future and in thanks for the past - In God We Trust.

Year 12 Certificate II in Resource Infrastructure and Work Preparation

Year 8 ScienceWhat is a Structure? All structures have to:• Holduporsupportsomething• Reachacrossorspanadistance• ContainorprotectsomethingStructures must support at least their own weight and often much more. Different forces balance each other to form stable structures. Strong, stable structures are able to transfer the weight of a load to another place as well as spread out the force.

Year 8 Science investigated structures built with marshmallows and toothpicks. They developed their own rules and the winner was determined by meeting the following qualitative and quantitative variables:

Stable for 2 minutes AcheivedThe tallest structure 12cmThe highest mass held 350g

The Year 12 Resources Infrastructure and Work Preparation class poured the second of their two concrete slabs as part of their assessment for Term 1. The students, for this pour, had the concrete delivered by Boral which allowed them to focus on finishing the slab and refining their techniques previously learned on smaller scales.

I would like to extend thanks to Cooper Jang, Cameron Lowth and Ryan Zeller, who arrived half an hour before school started to assist in pouring the slab and stayed through their morning tea to continue to help Teacher Aide, Grant Sim, in further finishing the slab and edges. The whole class has had a great learning experience throughout Term 1 and have improved the Trade Skills Centre facilities. Future students will greatly benefit from the work of these men.

CurriculumYear 12 Certificate II in Resource Infrastructure and Work Preparation

Last week, the Year 11 VET Hospitality class created a Roast Chicken Maryland with Herbed Polenta Chips and Roast Garlic Aioli. They started by deboning a chicken to get a Maryland cut. They made stock with the leftover carcasses which was then used in the polenta recipe. The chicken was marinated and vacuum sealed for storage.

The next stage was making the polenta chips, roasting the chicken and making the roast garlic aioli. Over a series of four lessons the students have created a mouth-watering dish from scratch that used all ingredients with minimal wastage. The skills learnt were:deboning, emulsification, roasting, stock making, boiling, shallow frying and presentation.

AFL News

Congratulations to all the Year 7 and 8 students who represented the College very well during Term 1. Once again, we had the privilege of entering two strong teams at each age group. It was pleasing to gain positive feedback from opposition schools on the way the Ignatius Park boys conducted themselves on the court.

IPC White in both the Year 7 and 8 competitions are to be commended on their efforts of winning the Townville Schools’ Competition.

A big thank you to the teachers who supported our young stars: Melanie Baxter, Gary Hughes, Rohan Lloyd, Amanda Loechel, Patrick McMahon and Georgia Stayte. The support of the parents that attended games and scored was also greatly appreciated. Best of luck to all the Ignatius Park boys that will be representing Townsville at the State Championships.

Also, all the best to Callum Parsons who will be representing North Queensland in the National Championships to be conducted in Townville next week.

Co-curricularRugby League NewsIn 2017, Ignatius Park College had several junior teams compete in the Townsville Secondary Schools Sport Rugby League season. All players represented their school with pride and displayed a high level of commitment and skill in the Ignatius Park Jersey. All players should be congratulated on the level of commitment to their school that they displayed and the high standard of Rugby League that they produced.

U12The U12s had their first opportunity to wear the Ignatius Park Jersey and certainly did their school proud along the way. The boys grew as a team throughout the year which was highlighted by the fact they went through the U13 competition and remain undefeated. It must be mentioned that the Ignatius Park boys played as a U12 team, in an U13 competition because other schools in Townsville were not able to field an U12 team. This exposure and commitment against the older boys will surely hold this team in good stead as they travel through the age groups and play against their own age in next year’s competition. The team was very well coached from Mr Christ and managed by Ms McLaughlin. Their efforts throughout the season were very much appreciated.

IPC U12Marius Khan, Frank Connor, Connor Jeffery, Brody Horan, Jack Wood, Adrian Sandy, Jamal Shibasaki, Risten O’Grady, Ethan Buchanan, Zachary Bannister, Owen Scott, Dominic Taylor, Caleb Searles, Jacque Pirard, Allen Casanova, Reece Foley, Kody Rogers and Patrick Clifford.

U13Ignatius Park College fielded two U13 teams in the U13 competition in 2017. Both teams played some quality Rugby League throughout the season. Although both teams were narrowly defeated by Kirwan State High’s number one team, Ignatius Park College decided to field two even teams in this competition which will further aid the development of our boys. A real highlight of the season was a close encounter between Ignatius Park Blue and Ignatius Park White, where the Mr Williams coached IPC White, narrowly escaped with a four-point victory! Both teams also racked up several large wins throughout the year and should be congratulated on their commitment to Ignatius Park College Rugby League. We are very excited to watch these players’ development as they continue to move through the IPC Rugby League Development System. Thank you to both coaches, Mr Gaston and Mr Williams, as well as Managers, Mr DiGiacomo and Mr Power, for all their knowledge and commitment throughout the term.

IPC WhiteKyle Reddicliffe, Ely Whiteley, Ryan McCarron, Mitch Ross, Daniel Weir, Cooper Bishop, Matthew Hunter, Kuresa Pio, Lachlan Lerch, Cody Sadler, Matt Dyer, Jay McPherson, Sean Bourke, Jayden McMinn, Ethan Dawson, Joseph Sale and Ethan Burkhardt.

IPC BlueJavan Ahkit, Elijah Joe, Zac Cozzitorto, Chase Briskey, Jairus Butalid, Aidan Ross, Jaxon Yow, Joel Basso, Mitch Brown, Jack Ford, Riley Innes, Ethan Fletcher, Eden Hess, Cian Botha, Mitchell Doyle, Jon Gatis, Hayden Lunn, Jarrod McPherson and Brian Gabori.

U14Ignatius Park College also fielded two teams in the U14 age group. Mr Guerra was the coach of IPC Blue, while Mr Brown took charge of IPC White. Mr Guerra’s IPC Blue soldiered their way through the early rounds of the completion with several convincing wins over their opposition. The final two rounds of the season proved to be the most competitive part of IPC’s Blue season as they were narrowly defeated by Kirwan 1, 12 – 0 in Week 8, before turning it around and drawing with the same team 12 – 12 in Week 9. Mr Brown’s IPC White should also be very proud of their efforts beating the other schools in this age group and only suffering defeats to IPC Blue and Kirwan 1. The IPC White boys certainly demonstrated their commitment to the IPC jersey and under Mr Brown’s guidance, continued to come together as a footy side as the season progressed. As a school, we are very excited about the prospects of both of these teams as they continue to develop and represent IPC. Thank you to both coaches, as well as Mrs Sally Conn and Ms Amanda Loechel for all their work as managers of these teams.

U14 WhiteBrayden BinDoraho, Preston Brown, Alex Dietrich, Nathan Ford, Kieran Godfrey, Kyle Heenen, Louis Jackson, Braedan Kennedy, Zaviah Leedie, Curamis Majok, Jake McAuliffe, Ben McLean, Lachlan Miekus, Jack Mines, Lachlan Nugent, Braydon Pott, Riley Pritchard, Gus Rees, Lachlan Scott, Lachlan Sheppard and Chase Wilkins

Co-curricularRugby League NewsU15The Ignatius Park College U15s continue to develop under the watchful eye of Head Coach, Mr Groves. The boys are part of the State Wide Cowboy’s Challenge which will continue to be played throughout Term 2. The boys were narrowly defeated by Kirwan State High School 16 – 10 in the first game of the season before bouncing back to record impressive victories over rival St Brendan’s College and Emmaus College both in Rockhampton.

The boys will now enjoy a small break before preparing for their next game against Mackay State High School in Term 2, Week 5 in which the boys will once again travel away with the First XIII as part of the State Wide competition. This time the fixtures will be played in Mackay. Thanks must go to Mr Groves and Mr Elliott for all of their hard work with the boys, as well as Ms Baxter, for excelling in her role of Team Manager.

Congratulations also to the following boys who were selected to represent North Queensland at the upcoming State Championships in Term 2:

2nd XIIIOnce again Ignatius Park College have had plenty of depth across the Open’s age group, allowing the 2nd XIII team to be entered in the local Block Sport Competition. The boys have produced some good performances under the watchful eye of Coaches, Mr Logan and Mr Ahern. Big wins over Ryan Cathoic College, Thuringowa State High School, Heatley State High School, Pimlico State High School and William Ross State High School were the highlight of the term. The narrow defeat, at the hands of All Souls from Charters Towers, reminded the boys of the importance of continued hard work and the necessity of fine tuning at regular training sessions!

The 2nd XIII are now looking forward to being a part of the inaugural State Wide GIO Cup Trophy Competition which will commence in Term 2. The competition is the first of its kind in Queensland and will allow the boys to participate in a series of local games with the opportunity of progressing through to State finals to be played live on Fox Sports, much in the same light as the National GIO Cup which is contented by the First XIII. This is an exciting opportunity for our boys to continue to play a high level of Rugby League.

2nd XIII SquadLleyton Anderson, Dre Backer, James Barclay, Jack Brown, Matt Conroy, Tom Chester, Drew Dawson, Jack Denley, Isaac Hawes, Will Hempsall, Matt Jeffrey, Jack Kelly, Luke Kenny, Dylan Kenworthy, Ryan Kinsey, Osana Koloi, Trent Lloyd, Jayrhem Metcalfe, Michael Payne, Sean Renton and Jack Wegener.

Co-curricularRugby League NewsFirst XIIIThe First XIII continue to work very hard both on the field and in the gym in preparation for what will be a vital Term 2. The boys achieved some pleasing results in Term 1 by moving through a round of crucial Aaron Payne Cup games and remaining undefeated throughout what was a challenging phase of Rugby League. Victories over local rivals Kirwan State High School, St Brendan’s College and Emmaus College all ensured that the boys are well placed going into Term 2 of the Aaron Payne Cup. Preparations for the Confraternity Carnival in Week 1 of the June/July Holidays will also step up a level.

Ignatius Park College have also been privileged to host Patrician Brothers College Fairfield from Sydney in Week 10. Patrician Brothers are the second most successful school in the National GIO Cup Competition, winning the National Title on five occasions. Peter Sterling, amongst others, are all proud old boys of the Sydney school. The highlight of the trip was a game played between the IPC First XIII and Patrician Brothers for the Frank Iemma Trophy. In a tightly fought contest it was the IPC boys who prevailed 20 – 12 on Tuesday afternoon to ensure Term 1 was completed with an unbeaten record intact. Harrison Leslie, Cameron Bateup and Sam Nimmo were all mentioned by the visiting school for having strong performances for IPC.

Congratulations also to the following boys who were selected to represent North Queensland at the upcoming State Championships to be held in Brisbane:

Please find below tips for your son on how to be successful at a job interview. Whilst we cover these at school, I thought it may be useful for parents to reinforce these points at home! Step 1 was covered in a previous Newsletter, here are Step 2 and Step 3:

Step 2 PREPARE for the Interview

What to Bring

• Paperandpenfortakingnotes• Yourdriver'slicense(ifapplicable)• Samplesofyourwork• Copiesoftranscripts,educationalcertificates,andprofessionalqualifications• Copiesofyourrésumé• Acopyofyourapplication• Yourreferencelist• Yourlistofquestionsthatyouwouldliketoask

Step 3 PRACTICE Makes Perfect

Try a mock interview. Several days before your interview, have a friend or family member ask you interview questions.

Prepare for your interview by reviewing sample interview questions you could expect an employer to ask you such as:

• Whydoyouwanttoworkforthiscompany?• Whatareyourstrengths?Weaknesses?• Tellmeaboutyoureducationandtrainingbackground.• Whatwasyourfavouritesubjectoractivityinschool?

Review these strategies for the interview:

• Behonestandthinkquickly.• Speakclearlyandmaintaineyecontactwiththeinterviewer.• Explainwhatyoucandofortheemployerandwhyyouwantthejob.• Remembertousegoodexamplestoillustrateyourpointandyourskills.• Expressyourselfinapositivemanner.• Avoidappearingdesperateoroverlyconfidentfortheposition.• Avoidsayingnegativethingsaboutpreviousemployers.
