YAMAHA has expanded its sophisticatedlong-distance tourer range for 2014 with theaddition of the FJR1300AE.

This new model, which sits between theFJR1300A and FJR1300AS in the range, offersriders an even greater overall motorcyclingpackage as well as a superior ride qualitythanks to Yamaha’s advanced electronically-adjustable suspension system.

Debuted for 2013 on the FJR1300AS with itsclutchless gear shift system, the FJR1300AEnow makes this system available to cus-tomers who prefer to have a standard gearbox. The electronically-adjustable suspensionsystem is designed to enable riders to varythe suspension’s performance to suit the roadsurface and the load carrying requirements.

By simply selecting an option via thehandlebar-mounted switch, the rider can se-lect One-Up, One-Up with Luggage, Two-Up orTwo-Up with Luggage suspension settings.

The elegantA3 cornersits market

The Audi A3 Saloon might look like a shrunkenA4, but it offers some of the very best efficiencymeasures in its class and brings a cool elegancewithin the reach of those who might find an A4 abit of a stretch. The 1.4 TFSI model with cylindercut technology and the twin-clutch gearboxlooks the pick of the bunch so far.

Audi leaves no niche unfilled. The A3Saloon now fills a hole once occupied bythe original A4. Andy Enright re p o r t s .

IT doesn’t take a work of genius tofigure out that the A4 Saloon haspushed ever further upmarketwith each bigger generation andAudi saw fit to fill the void. It’s atrend that repeats across theclass, with the BMW 1 Series and

the Mercedes CLA-Class increasinglyaccounting for sales that would oncehave gone to old 3 Series and C-Classvariants. Both BMW and Mercedeshave strong offerings in this sector.

Audi needed to do likewise.Although Audi promises all manner

of engines, for the time being we’ll haveto make do with three.

T hey’re all very good powerplantsthough, with UK customers choosingbetween a 140PS 1.4 TFSI petrol unitwith clever Cylinder on Demand tech-nology and a more conventional 180PS1.8-litre TFSI petrol powerplant, bothoffered only with S tronic auto trans-mission. There’s also a 2.0-litre TDI(150PS) diesel with a manual gearbox.

All A3 Saloons get an electromech-anically assisted steering system and anext-gen stability control packagewhich includes an electronic limitedslip differential for composed deploy-ment of power.

The optional Audi drive select systemlets the driver vary the throttle re-sponse, steering weighting and, wherethe S tronic transmission is present,the gearbox shift points.

W h at ’s more, it can also be upgradedto manage the optional Audi magneticride system with its clever magneto-rheological fluid-filled dampers.

Yes, the A3 Saloon does look aston-ishingly like an A4 that’s been scaleddown slightly. Some might not be fans ofAu d i ’s Russian Doll styling approachand sure enough, there aren’t too manysurprises about the look and feel of thisone. Still, given the upward trajectoryof Audi’s sales figures, perhaps that’sno bad thing.

The boot’s carrying capacity amountsto 425-litres with the seats up – 4 5 - l i t re smore than the A3 Sportback. This ca-pacity can be increased by folding downthe split rear seat backs. The boot lidautomatically swings upward when un-l o cke d .

The A3 Saloon is only offered in high-spec Sport and S line trims, and cur-rently all petrol models come only withS tronic twin-clutch auto transmission.

That accounts for a high-sounding setof prices that start from just over£24,000. Basically, you’re looking at pay-ing a £1,000 premium over a five-doorA3 Sportback with the same engine andtrim. Options in the passenger com-partment include an LED interior light-ing package, panoramic glass sunroof,sports seats, heated seats, advanced keykeyless access, deluxe electronic cli-mate control with economy mode andadaptive lighting for the xenon plusheadlights, which can be supplementedwith variable headlight range control.

Where Audi has made the biggeststrides in recent years is in connectiv-ity of electronic systems and the A3fully embraces these advances.

The Audi connect system bundles allinfotainment technologies that let the

driver network with the internet, in-frastructure and other vehicles. Thecentral component is the Mobile phonepreparation. It produces the connec-tion to the internet and passengers canconveniently surf and email with up toeight mobile devices via an integratedWLAN hotspot. Watch your roamingcharges though.

For the driver, the Mobile phone pre-paration brings features such as nav-igation with images from Google Earth,a web radio function, Google Points ofInterest search by voice control andGoogle Street View. There’s also Audionline traffic information that takesmovement data from thousands ofsmartphones and navigation units trav-elling on the road and can inform you ofaverage speeds, predicted journeytimes and recommended reroutes.

It’s easy to get a little blase about carslike the Audi A3 Saloon, to take itsachievements for granted somewhat.

But let’s pause for a minute andconsider not the numbers but the philo-sophy behind this car. It’s properlysmart, offering a compact, light andefficient car without being overblown.

It might not turn your head like aMercedes CLA, but there are many whoprefer Audi’s discreet take on this morecompact executive saloon. As the A4has become bigger and more sophist-icated, it has created a space below it forAudi to demonstrate how well it doesclean and elegant.� The car will be available at Audi’sdealership at Cribbs Causeway,Bristol, from September 21.

And it’ll set theneighbours talking far more than if you simplybought yet another small German-badgedexecutive saloon. It’s a model to challenge yourpreconceptions, that’s for sure.

The German brandhopes an enhanced value proposition will help.
