Just like traditional bulbs which are not all the same (some emit warmer light, others cooler tones), LEDs can be separated into those that emit luminous flux in different shades of white (cool, for example, for the typical use in street lights). But there are also differences in colour rendering quality. Some have an extremely high colour quality and are particularly suitable for museums and galleries, where the balance of nuances cannot be even slightly altered in order to preserve the correct perception and enjoyment of works of art. Until recently, the lamps that most accurately rendered painters colours were considered to be halogens,

particularly the dichroic type. Now, technology has also made available LEDs. The new-generation combine efficiency with low energy consumption and great light spectrum quality. Obviously, this quality becomes a precious ally for exhibition curators, who can use light to control the perceptions of the public with respect to the works of art, essential, for example, for what is referred to as the luminous climate. The lighting of fabrics, and therefore fashion, deserves its own mention. New LEDs have a very high level of colour rendering, identified by an extremely high CRI (colour rendering index). The higher

the colour rendering index (up to a maximum of 100), the more balanced the lamp is. This enhancement of the value of colour is also achieved through the choice of colour temperature, expressed in degrees Kelvin, depending on the shades for saturation: from 3000K for warm colours to 6000K for cooler ones. If we consider light distribution in a room, LED lamps can also be mounted in wall-washer luminaires for uniform lighting of the walls, a handy device for being able to freely position works of art on the vertical surfaces, deciding whether or not to leave the higher sections of the walls in the shadow.

Museum, artist, spectator, light.A museum is not only the space in which works of art are exhibited, but also the environment where the artist and spectator meet. Its job is to create clean and neutral backgrounds to focus the attention of the spectator on the work itself. But what happens when the context changes? The space can take part in the dialogue between the spectator and the exhibition. The artist communicates his ideas creatively, presenting a subjective reality in order to achieve authentic emotions and feelings, with the

aim of creating a dynamic communication between imagination, fantasy and spectator. He gives the work meaning and value. His role is defined by the will of the author and by the design of the space. But the subject that perceives the work may not fit the role that the author had imagined for him; he can move to an active participation, to the point of becoming an integral part of the work itself. And finally light, the essential element that influences the communication

between work and spectator. It is through light that the feelings, emotions and even the meaning that the artist wanted to transmit can be emphasized. Palco, a veritable family of projectors, considers the work exhibited not only as a physical element, but also its content, the feelings and the message that it is communicating, without forgetting about the space and its contribution to the work. Its shape is inspired by the brush, the main tool used by the artist in the creative process.

Lighting works of art requires high-performance fittings that can rigorously respect the quality of the colours, surfaces and volumes. This is why the range of Primopiano projectors has been extended with two new solutions, which are particularly suitable for museums, art collections,

exhibitions and all applications where light must enhance the quality of the objects being exhibited. By using the latest generation of LEDs, the quality of the light is perfectly matched with energy efficiency. A great deal of research went into finding an LED lamp with a light spectrum

able to enhance warm colours in a similar manner to halogen lamps, but absolutely free of ultraviolet and infrared emissions.The innovative wall washer optic has been designed to homogenously light walls without areas of shadow in the space close to the ceiling.

Without neglecting the versions with conventional sources, Pixel Pro makes an innovative use of LED technology. The heat dissipation is controlled through

the design of the dissipator: the functional element is transformed into an aesthetic object. Pixel Pro is perfect for all situations requiring a flexible and structured lighting system, which can enhance locations and products. The improved chromatic yield heightens the colours of the goods, whilst the lack of UV and IR rays ensures that particularly sensitive objects are not damaged.

The quality of a projector is determined by the optical system, the reflectors and the lenses, which must direct the light flow from the lamps correctly. The particular texture of the reflectors must

produce a light distribution without the defects produced by the possible imperfections of the lamps and in particular the typical halo effect of discharge lamps. The lenticular surface

of the reflectors has been carefully studied to produce micro reflections which can eliminate defects, without reducing the optical performance, and therefore the efficiency, of the fittings.

LEDs, due to their shape and their nature of dot-like sources of extremely concentrated light, raise two types of issues that require studied solutions. The first is the correct return of the balance of colours and the chromatic quality of the light and the second is anti-glare. In these cases iGuzzinis solutions are called iPlan, for a diffused and relaxed light and Laser Blade, for a more concentrated and, in some ways, dramatic light

that eliminates light beams that cross the eyes and which are not required to light the objects. The high efficiency of the fitting is guaranteed due to the utilized lenses which aim the light flow on the desired area. Spillage outside the desired area is minimized by the lenses (cut off) utilized by iGuzzini. One of the primary advantages of using Laser Blade is derived from its minimal dimensions. This quality allows

one to create patterns onthe ceiling which waspreviously impossible with other forms of recessed lighting. The limit, but also the strength of this solution is that it concentrates the light on horizontal surfaces: shelves, tables, floors. It is particularly suitable as an accent light that, silhouetted against darker walls, highlights, by contrast, the objects displayed in the windows and on the shelves.

Several years have passed since the last revolution within the lighting industry. It was brought about by the introduction and spread of halogen lamps; both high and low voltage systems. The new lamps, with their extremely wide range of power and their small dimensions have paved the way for designers to come up with new devices and a new concept of lighting design. New technology and the spread of luminous diodes represents a further great revolution which was unthinkable even just a few years ago. LED technology has very quickly reached levels of performance, duration, colour rendering and reliability that allow it to be used in a wide range of applications and to drive industrial research, while simultaneously allowing for the adapting and conversion

of various existing models in the catalogue. The revision of a series of products, amongst which is the Cestello and all its derivatives,have resulted in a light device that incorporates the light source within the body. Additionally, the system offers a choice between two different heat dissipation systems; active and passive. The lamps with active heat dissipation integrate a small cooling fan, which allows the use of LEDs with a total power of 35 Watt and a light emission, which would be impossible with other types of lamps in these devices, thereby increasing performance. The inclusion of a ready-made parts, such as a small cooling fan (systems found in computers) within a lighting device, continues along standing tradition which began in the last century and

was used by artists and designers alike (Duchamp, Man Ray, the Castiglioni brothers, Bruno Munari etc.). The lamps, with passive heat dissipation (without forced ventilation), are characterised by a power of 25 Watt and an emission of 1650 lumens; they can replace traditional halogen and metal halide lamps in areas that require silence. Four innovative optics have been designed for the new lamp: refractors designed with the use of nanotechnology provide spot (16), average (30), flood (46) and elliptical beams. Various beams can be achieved by replacing the glass in front of the source; a further revolution in terms of management and maintenance. This new lamp can be used as a veritable lighting device thus reducing energy consumption, whilst achieving good colour rendering and reliability over time.

Visual ergonomics is directly proportional to the correct return of balance of the colours and the chromatic quality of the light. The solution designed by iGuzzini with the iPlan and iPlan LED achieves a soft, diffused and glare-free light. iPlan now has a high-performance LED solution in addition to the fluorescent lamp version. In this case the technological innovation of placing the new LEDs on the perimeter

of the lamp body ensures that part of the light produced is directed downwards by the bottom of the fitting. The bottom is covered with a highly-efficient mirror reflector that mixes the concentrated light of the LEDs, further softened by the microprisms on the internal surface of the diffusor. This allows for a homogenous and highly efficient light surface with fewer LEDs (for further

savings in energy consumption). Additionally, it reduces the thickness of the luminaire, which can be mounted on the ceiling, recessed or suspended. In order to attain maximum benefit and energy efficiency from the system, it is essential that the fitting be sealed hermetically, in order to prevent dust entering, as this could compromise the optical efficiency of the internal surfaces lit by LEDs.

Light has no body, it is not an object. Light is not matter, it is not a thing. We see it in lighting, in the sky, or in fireworks invented by man. On the other hand light creates things by illuminating them; it reveals their shape, colour and defines their position in space. With fire man also invented light. And to support it and transport it, he invented torches and then

lanterns, etc.One of the latest light supports, of the over one hundred that I have designed, is Lightshine, a blade that cuts space, that stops where light is required and emits it with grace and abundance. It is a simple aluminium profile, with two gently curved sides that join on two delicate edges. This simple but effective profile allows for rows of LEDs to be placed within,

providing light with high and low contrast. If a space needs to be lit professionally, the light must become the queen of this operation: its costumes must be correct, fitted and suitable for its specific functions as queen of the space. This is even harder when the dress, as in this case, must be produced industrially. But the result is guaranteed: this is iGuzzini haute couture.

The evolution of lighting systems is being guided by the rapid introduction of LEDs, which quickly increased their performance, both in terms of energy efficiency and the quantity of luminous flux emitted. The iN30 system has extended its range of solutions by introducing new LED versions,

which allow setups of lighting solutions that adorn the space with continuous fine lines, but at the same time are proper general lighting solutions. Careful study of the optics allows realization of general lighting levels, normally required indoors, while simultaneously

The underlying theme and credo of iGuzzinis street lighting solutions is environmental sustainability. LEDs, with their extremely high performance, represent the future in terms of efficiency, low consumption, reduction of CO2 emissions and increased performance, even in critical conditions. As the temperature rises, in fact, the light flow decreases, whilst with LEDs and their electronic components, the ratio between watts and lumens can be optimised by automatically controlling the current required based on the external temperatures, thus avoiding overheating

the lamps and extending their life. LEDs significantly improve the colour rendering index (IRC, that is the ability of a source to maintain the colour of an object it illuminates unaltered), and it has been proven that a light with constant IRC provides better lighting of a road surface and any dangers (holes, animals and obstacles in general), thus improving safety. iGuzzini refers to this innovation not as an intelligent system, but a system of single intelligent fittings that, thanks to the on board electronics, work without wasting energy. Each fitting can be dimmed, to allow

punctual control operations in specific situations, such as, for example, uniform lighting on roads and greater luminescence on roundabouts. Moreover, the body of the lamp is constructed using various independent modules which makes the replacement of LEDs an easy task. They can be removed without complex maintenance operations and without the need to replace the entire pole (providing consequent savings on site costs and convenience). The increased performance allows for new systems, to reduce the number of poles required for adequate lighting.

Wow is the most innovative solution for street lighting, which achieves maximum light quality, whilst at the same time reducing energy consumption and therefore management costs of the systems. The innovative Timeless Technology ensures that the fitting can be kept up to date by following the fast evolution

of LEDs. In fact the single optical module with LEDs, and the relative driver, can be replaced with a new module that uses the latest generation of LEDs, without having to replace the entire fitting. A solution that allows the single modules, and not the whole fitting, to be replaced quickly if there are any damaged LEDs.

Wow features a street optic for streets with mainly vehicular traffic and an optic for streets with a greater number of pedestrians for increased visual comfort. The research of the shape was based on optimising the technical performance and on achieving a piece of urban furniture with streamlined lines.

A comforting light for a living room, an urban living room in order to soften its shadows. This is the primary characteristic of U.F.O., designed by Renzo Piano, which looks almost like a luminous leaf with a homogenous distribution of glare-free light. At the heart of the project is once again the focus on light pollution, resulting in a flow that does not spill over the screen, but is aimed downwards. The efficient, modular luminous panels, which can also be aggregated, increase comfort compared to traditional solutions and can be used in different public areas, creating warm and welcoming atmospheres for town centres, pedestrian and residential areas, and more neutral effects for car parks and rest areas.The flexibility of the solutions starts from the square geometry

of the basic panel, which can be combined with different arms for applications on poles. U.F.O. applies the technology used in the iPlan system, with LEDs positioned along the profile. Cities are increasingly a space in which functions interweave and overlap. Streets bring together both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, each one with its own requirements in terms of light quality. The U.F.O. system was designed with the aim of providing a street lighting system coordinated in terms of form but articulated in terms of lighting. U.F.O. features a high performance street optic for streets with mainly vehicular traffic and an optic for streets with a greater number of pedestrians for increased visual comfort. A diffused light optic, achieved with the innovative use of LEDs, has been designed

for pedestrian areas, which contributes to creating a comfortable environment free of glare, with softened lights, very similar to the effect achieved with indirect lighting. The possibility of fitting various optics on the pole ensures that various requirements can be fulfilled at the same time, such as lighting the street and the adjacent pedestrian way. The design of the system has created an urban furniture system with contemporary lines, that can easily be inserted in any urban context, both historical and contemporary.
