IHHFC Workshop Proposed Publication

• Outline roughly following agenda1. Introduction 2. Near term HHFC design and R&D (ITER) (R. Nygren)

3. Long term HHFC concepts (Power plants) (R. Raffray)4. Material aspects for near term and long term concepts

3.1 development/fabrication/joining (D. Hoelzer)

3.2 plasma interaction testing aspects) (M. Roedig)

5. Physics considerations for near term and long term concepts (D. Whyte)6. Evaluation methodology to evaluate current readiness level vis-à-vis the long term objective and how to get there (M. Tillack)7. Discussion - issues - recommendations (R. Raffray/R. Nygren/D. Whyte/all)8. Conclusions (All)

• Session coordinators- Summarize presentations in your session + points raised in discussion- Send me contributions by January 31, 2009

• Presenters- Please send a summary of your presentation with some key figures to your session organizer (cc to me)

• All other contributions welcome

IHHFC Workshop -Session 2Long term HHFC concepts (power plants)

• 3 presentations- EU PFC/divertor concepts for power plants -P.Norajitra- US PFC/divertor concepts for power plants - R. Raffray- Japan PFC/divertor concepts for power plants - S. Konishi/Y. Ueda

• EU/US Designs presented- He-cooled, W-alloy concepts to accommodate ~10 MW/m2

- He coolant: ~10MPa; ~600-700°C- W-alloy ~700-1300°C- W armor ~1500-1800°C

- Also advanced design with Pb-17Li + SiCf/SiC but limited high heat flux accommodation

• Different concerns- W armor: off-normal events; erosion; T retention- Structural material: allowable window of operation

IHHFC Workshop -Session 2Long term HHFC concepts (power plants)

• For all designs, W alloy development required to widen operating temp. range and to develop reliable fabrication and joining processes.- ~700°C (governed by W ductility considerations) to enable coupling to an ODS ferritic steel manifold

- ~1300°C (governed by the W recrystallization limit) to provide desirable high-temperature capability)

• Need ODS FS with high enough temperature for joining with W- ~ 800°C

• Off normal events - thermal effects on PFC- a few disruptions a year (~ 3-10MJ/m2, 1-3 ms)- No VDE (~60 MJ/m2, 0.2 s)- A few uncontrolled ELMs (~1.5 MJ/m2 over 0.4 ms)- Controlled ELM’s perhaps acceptable with W (~0.3 MJ/m2 over 0.4 ms)
