Adriana Sandoval, a cheerleader at IHS, said, “I enjoy performing in front of all the students and giving the school spirit.” Sandoval also said, “I think pep rallies increase school spirit; it can show kids that once one person does it and gets involved with the pep rally, then their friends want to do it, and it grows.” Robert Young, a teacher at IHS, said, ‘‘School spirit is important. There is a group of teachers here trying to build school spirit on cam- pus. [Independence] has been here since about 1977, almost 40 years...and you would think it’s [a] brand new school.” According to Young, “The more school spirit you have the more the teachers want to be here, contribute, and get involved because they know the kids care. That’s why pep rallies, to me, are important because it lets the faculty and students know, ‘Hey, we have more school spirit!’” Mr.Peña a teacher at IHS said, “The most important thing to encourage and in- crease school spirit is to show up at events, whether it’s a football game, volley- ball game, badminton match or even showing up at the Glendale pool for [IHS’s] swim team; that’s spirit! Manuel Castaneda, a se- nior at IHS said, ‘‘School spirit promotes the school’s life, creates diversity, and makes the school look more lively to see how much, us, students, are involved with our school.” Independence Shows Spirit Photos by: Bianca Ramirez and Nathalie Velasco The cheer team spreads school spirit.
