1. PASSES will not be issued to get food and/or drink. Students will receive three passes per trimester.

2. COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this college preparatory course, students will apply the scientific method in laboratories, as well as course work. Topics will include stoichiometry, gas laws, calorimetry, equilibrium and reaction rates, nuclear chemistry, acids, bases, neutralization, and solutions.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

1. HOMEWORK: All homework and assignments are due at the beginning of the hour unless specified otherwise. If assignments are not turned in when they are collected, they are late. Late assignments will be accepted no later than five school days after the due date, and the graded score on the late work will be reduced by 50%. If absent when an assignment is given, the student will be given the number of classes absent to complete any make-up work. If absent when a regular assignment is due, the student must turn in the work (with ABSENT written at the top of the assignment) the day the student returns at the beginning of the hour, or it will be counted as late. Be sure to contact another person from YOUR class to verify assignments/lessons and to get notes. A tentative calendar that outlines the courses lectures, tests/quizzes, and laboratories is on my web page. Quizzes will be given randomly, but will be announced at least the day before it is given. The calendar of assignments is always subject to change. If the student is absent when a major project is due, such as the FERP, the project must be received by Mrs. Ruedisueli by the start of the hour the student attends or the score will be reduced by 50%.

Each homework assignment may be graded for correctness and/ or completion. It is important to complete each assignment and to work for correctness. Your success will be related to the amount of effort you apply to your homework. Copying another persons homework will result in a zero grade and an academic misconduct for all parties involved. If you are absent, YOU are responsible for getting the notes, learning the material, getting any missed data, and making up a test or quiz in the allotted time frame. Please understand that I cannot reteach every lesson to every absent student. I am more than happy to help you with content you do not understand after you have copied the notes, read the content in the text, have had a classmate explain the notes to you and/ or you watched an on-line video such as Brian Swarthout or researched the topic and took notes.

2. TESTS: Tests will be given upon the completion of a chapter. The test questions will be based on lecture material, laboratories, reading assignments, quizzes, and homework. Quizzes will be returned to the students to keep as a reference for the final exam. Due to security reasons, students may not keep any test. Students may review any tests at the start of any HELP time. If you are absent the day of a test or a quiz, it is your responsibility to take the test/quiz the day you return to school. Tests will be placed in the testing room at the end of the day of your absence and will be available the morning of your return. Quizzes must be made up with Mrs. Ruedisueli in B110 in the a.m. during the office hours. If the test/quiz is taken within 2-5 days of your return, the graded score will be reduced by 10% each day the makeup is delayed, unless other arrangements are made by you with Mrs. Ruedisueli in advance of your return. No credit will be given for tests not made up within 5 days of your return from an absence.

If you are absent the day before a test or quiz, you are still required to take the test or quiz on the given date if no new material was covered on the date of your absence. If new material was covered on the date of your absence, you may take the test or quiz the next day in the testing center. (Consult your calendar for the lecture schedule.)

3. LABORATORIES: Safety is extremely important in the laboratory. If lab rules are not followed, you will be given a zero for the lab and will be given a writing assignment for the following lab. If lab rules are broken more than once, the above discipline will be followed and you will not be able to participate in another lab that semester unless a parent conference is called by the student. This discipline applies to taking off goggles in the lab area. Before labs are begun, a safety unit will be taught and tested in Chemistry A. You will not be able to participate in a lab in chemistry A until the safety test is passed with at least a B grade.

If you are absent the day of a lab, you will have the number of days absent to complete the laboratory write-up if data can be provided. If data cant be provided, you will have three days to write a 500 word essay to earn the lab grade. ACTUAL LABORATORIES CANNOT BE MADE UP. The essay needs to be on the topic of the missed lab and will count for the same number of possible points. This essay must be in your own words and/or cited, or you will receive half credit.

CLOSED TOE SHOES ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL LABORATORIES. If the student does not have closed toe shoes, he/she CANNOT perform the laboratory due to safety concerns and will need to follow the above directions for a missed laboratory.

4. FINAL EXAM: All students are required to take a final exam at the end of each trimester. It will constitute 20% of the trimester grade. The FERP (final exam review packet) is posted on my website and the students received a copy the first day of class.

GRADES- You will be graded on a percentage point system. Each assignment carries a certain point value. Grades will be rounded up to the next percentage for letter grade purposes if the tenth of the percentage is 0.5-0.9.

5. HELP: I am usually available to help you on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7:10 a.m. to 7:25 a.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:10 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. You can also e-mail me any questions. Email your questions by 4:00 and you should receive a response no later than 8:00. I usually check e-mail each evening as soon as I get home. I will check email on Sundays by 4:00 p.m. (Please note that there have been times that I could not access my e-mail from home. If you do not get a response, make sure you see me first thing the next a.m. if you need immediate assistance.) I am here to help you learn chemistry!

6. NOTES /EXTRA CREDIT /PARTICIPATION: All students are expected to take notes. Unused passes may be turned in at the end of the trimester for 3 extra credit points each. Five extra credit points will be given to each student who does not take out their phone bell to bell. Students who do not use these passes are rewarded, for it is important that each student take notes, participate and not miss any class time. Only an extra credit ion quiz will be given. There will be no other extra credit assignments.

7. RULES:

a. Do not talk when another person is speaking.

b. Do not put trash in the drawers and/or sinks.

c. Do not line up at the door before the bell rings. You will be dismissed ONLY when every person is seated.

d. Do not sit on or write on lab tables or desks.

e. Discourteous behavior for a substitute teacher will result in the loss of all extra credit points.

f. NO FOOD, DRINKS, PHONES, BEEPERS, or ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT. You will be asked to throw out any food or drink

that is not water. Water is allowed in clear containers.

g. PHONES ARE NOT TO BE SEEN or HEARD from bell to bell. If a phone is seen or heard, the student will lose the 5
