EXTENDED ESSAY and ESSAY IN

WORLD STUDIES

THE HEXAGON

EXTENDED ESSAY or ESSAY IN WORLD STUDIES IS:

Compulsory for all Diploma Programme students

A piece of independent research/investigation on a topic chosen by the student in cooperation with a supervisor in the school

Externally assessed (max. 3 points together with TOK Essay)

Extended Essay and TOK Matrix (E is a failing condition)

THE MAIN AIMS OF THE EXTENDED ESSAY:

Pursue independent research on a focused topic

Develop research and communication skills

Develop the skills of creative and critical thinking

Engage in a systematic process of research appropriate to the subject

Experience the excitement of intellectual discovery.

EXTENDED ESSAY OR WORLD STUDY ESSAY IS:

Approved DP subjects

Formal piece of writing, in max. 4,000 words

40 hours work (Student), 3 – 5 (Teacher)

Concluded with a short interview, or viva voce

Present extended essay or world studies essay in a format appropriate to the subject, acknowledging sources in one of the established academic ways

Use the terminology and language appropriate to the subject with skill and understanding

Apply analytical and evaluative skills appropriate to the subject, with an understanding of the implications and the context of their research.

Ethics. Supervisers will guide you through the etics of your EE.
