II. OUR STORYAnalog Outfitters is a rapidly growing boutique amplifier company that builds world-class guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets, and related products. Our manufacturing process is truly unique in that the vast major-ity of our raw materials come from unwanted or otherwise obsolete organs made by such manufacturers as Baldwin, Hammond, and Wurlitzer. These companies manufactured their organs with the best mate-rials available. As a result, all of our speaker cabinets are made from up-cycled wood from species such as mahogany, redwood, walnut, and maple. Additionally, our amplifiers benefit from the use of vintage output transformers that impart a classic tone unrivaled by companies who are forced to use modern output transformers. Analog Outfitters officially began in 2002 in a basement workshop in Champaign, IL. Ben Juday had spent the three previous years at the University of Illinois pursuing a graduate degree in Geography with the ultimate goal of being a college professor. In 2000, Ben had the great fortune of meeting physics pro-fessor Steve Errede who was teaching a class entitled “Physics of Electronic Musical Instruments”. Ben asked Professor Errede if he could sit in on the course, and they became fast friends and Errede became an unofficial mentor to Ben. 15 years later, this collaborative relationship continues with Errede playing an integral design role in almost all of Analog Outfitters products.

From 2002 thru 2011, Analog Outfitters specialized in repairs and live sound. These 9 years were for-mative in giving the team at Analog Outfitters a thorough understanding of the technical side of the music business. After repairing thousands of pieces of equipment, the team learned what designs stood up to the rigors of the road, and what designs failed after 6 months.

In 2011, Ben Juday decided to build a custom amplifier for fun with no intentions of starting an amplifier business. He had hundreds of old Hammond organ amplifiers lying around the shop, as well as some old signs and some empty scientific equipment cases. After much trial and error, the first Sarge amplifier was born. The rest, as they say, is history.

THE SARGEEnclosed in a unique enclosure constructed from recycled steel, the Sarge is built tough and highly portable for any occasion. Each enclosure is slightly different due to parts sourcing, and features a unique case that is able to withstand any potential damage. Small enough to fit on any cabinet, the amplifier is powered by two EL84s in the power section, two 12AX7s in a preamp setting and a 5Y3 rectifier. This allows the Sarge to provide a gritty and authoritative tone that is able to make itself heard regardless of the composition of the sound.

THE SUPER SARGEThe Super Sarge is a more powerful version of our Sarge model, with four EL84 power tubes. This model resulted from a collaborative effort between Analog Outfitters and Nels Cline of Wilco. Nels wanted an amplifier with the tone of the Sarge but with more clean headroom for live applications; the resulting amplifier is equally at home in the studio or on stage.

CASE MADE FROM DECOMMISSIONED ROAD SIGN

ROAD AMPThe Road Amp is specifically designed to be tough, and its outer shell is constructed from decommissioned road signs; having proven themselves for decades on the side of America’s streets, these signs are now ready to be reborn as the unique case for our new line of tone machines. Like our other amplifiers, the Road Amp is built from vintage Hammond organ amplifiers repurposed to create the sparkling tone that only vintage transformers can produce.

SCANNERWe had two goals in mind when building The Scanner: to create the best sounding product available and to manufacture it with repurposed, sustainable materials. The Scanner features an amazing vibrato and reverb sound. We made it out of repurposed vintage vibrato scanners and reverb tanks from unwanted Hammond organs. In short, our endeavor was a success.

The Scanner’s reverb circuit is very simple; hi-fi grade components drive the reverb tank and then mix that signal with the vibrato signal.

We also added a foot switch so users can select only reverb, only vibrato, both effects, or the “dry” signal only.

The top of The Scanner is made from a high-quality, clear, ¼” acrylic material. Additional features include a pad switch on the ¼” input, XLR line input and output jacks, a line output attenuator, a 4 pin XLR switching jack, and a ¼” TRS input for an expression pedal to control the speed of the unit. The XLR output is constantly present for connection to a recording console and can be used as a D.I. for front of house.

ORGANIC MIDIUtilizing genuine vintage Hammond organ keybeds and drawbars, these instruments provide the original organ experience with none of the logistical drawbacks. The weight has been reduced to one fifth of some original models, making these instruments lighter and smaller than even the sleekest B3 chop. Without the need for constant maintenance such as tube replacement and generator oiling, these instruments are road ready and make the perfect addition to any stage or touring rig.

We have wired the original organ key contact and drawbar infrastructure into a patent pending MIDI interface which works seamlessly with all of the major organ clone

software platforms. With features such as MIDI and USB connectivity, MIDI merge, ¼” jack for Leslie speed control, and ¼ inch jacks for volume and expression pedals, the customizable control options are almost limitless. We have also designed an optional 6 pin 122 or 147 Leslie speaker output to create the rich, classic tone the organ is famous for. Lightweight and portable, the Analog Outfitters line of MIDI controllers are the best alternative to a vintage Hammond B3 for those musicians who need a portable MIDI controller.

HX3 ORGAN MODULEOur genuine gate array chip (FPGA) handles all tone generation, key gating, vibrato/percussion effects, and audio processing in parallel. The tonewheel, line box capacitor, and tube has its own dedicated digital counterpart inside the gate array. Furthermore, there are no time-consuming DSP subroutines to call. Therefore, audio generation is instant and latency-free. Even if you lay your arms across each manual, there are no notes missing and no drooping in treble response.

The FPGA does a beautiful job in recreating a rotary cabinet effect in the style of the legendary 122 type amp. It uses a 512-pole FIR filter to exactly resemble the behavior and frequency response of the Jensen® V-21 driver mounted to its rotating horn assembly.
