A budget-management reportfrom the United Way

At United Way, volunteers carefully review thebudgets, operating patterns and track record ofagencies asking to become part of the United Wayorganization.

They scrutinize the various functions performedby the agency, look at the kinds of people it helps, and evaluate its success in delivering its services.

But what happens when a new service agencywants to become a United Way organiza-tion-especially when there may be two or moreequally qualified organizations equally in need ofUnited Way support? Who chooses? And on whatbasis?

The answer to this question is often complex. And sometimes it can be an agonizing decision toadmit one agency instead of another.

The people decideBut the bottom line is that volunteers do make

the decisions after carefully weighing all the prosand cons. It’s sometime a hard process, but it’s asfair as we know how to make it.

Volunteers work free of charge doing everythingfrom collecting money to deciding how it will be us-ed, so administrative costs are kept low.

An that’s how United Way works so well. Andwhy. ~ Thanks I;o Uou. il; works.

Versatile Nedlloydro/ro ships make

exporters happy

Jeddah. Dubai. Bahrain. Kuwait. Music tothe exporter’s ears! But then he asks: Who canhandle my containers? Who can handle myreefer of meat? Who can handle my rollingstock?

The answer is: Nedlloyd Line.Since 1948, Nedlloyd has been providing ser-

vice to the Middle East from the U.S.A. withclockwork dependability.

Founded in 1870, "The Nederland Line"combined with a number of like-minded ship-ping companies to form what is now known asNedlloyd Lines B.V. Located in Rotterdam,The Netherlands, Nedlloyd owns and operatesa vast fleet of vessels ranging from cargo linersto LPG tankers. All told, Nedlloyd at lastcount had over 2.5 million d.w.t, on the seaswith another 200,000 d.w.t, of new buildingsunder construction.

transportation and handling has brought abouta sharp increase in productivity both for theship owners and port/terminal operators alikeand achieved savings which are ultimately tothe benefit of those who pay for thetransportation of goods.

Roll-on/roll-off vessels can carry some 600containers on deck, while the under deck areaprovides around 3,500 running meters of flushspace which can be used for wheeled cargo andother ro/ro cargo. The design and capacity ofthe vessels make them equally suited for thecarriage of heavy construction equipment andconsumer goods. Refrigerated and chilledcontainers can also be accommodated as thevessels are fitted with up to 100 reeferconnections.

The vessels, each eight-lane, have an angledstern ramp which allows them to work at anyberth, conventional or container. With thecapacity of 400 tons this ramp facilitates thecarriage of all types of trailers, rolling stock, and heavy lift cargo. The ship’s own handlingequipment includes fork lift trucks andtractors. Adjustable bow and stern thrustersenable the vessels to enter and leave portwithout requiring tug boat assistance.

In June of this year, the NEDLLOYD joinedthe NEDLLOYD ROUEN, NEDLLOYDROCHESTER (pictured on the cover) and theNEDLLOYD ROTTERDAM to offer sailingsfrom Houston with a frequency of every 17days.

J.J. Van Steenbergan, president of NedlloydInc., part of the worldwide transportationgroup Nedlloyd, states that, "We are delightedwith the addition of the 25,000-d.w.t. vessel, giving us the opportunity to step up frequency, our only competitive weakness. We are now inan even better position for the major contractswhich are a feature of the trade."

The familiar black and orange funnel is acommon sight at Barbours Cut Terminal nearLa Porte, and symbolizes the most modern, sophisticated cargo vessels ever launched.

Like all other modes of transportation, linershipping has been subject to dramatic change, especially over the last decade. Over the years, the need to transport heavier cargo necessitatedthe building of specialized ships, which in turnrequired special port facilities. Uncertainweather conditions which once caused havocwith liner schedules now present no seriousproblem largely due to the introduction of thecontainer concept.

The speedy adoption of the ro/to method of

For u.s. exporters who need assistance inthe Middle East, the Nedlloyd Group has beeninvolved in most of the major importingmarkets for many years, with an area office inBahrain and agents in all key ports. Inasmuchas the Group is currently involved with MiddleEastern companies in several joint transporta-tion ventures in the area, Nedlloyd is wellsuited to serve their customers.

As for the U.S.A., Nedlloyd is wellrepresented in the Gulf by Strachan ShippingCompany which operates a vast network ofport and inland offices and on the West Coastby Transpacific Transportation Company, whoco-ordinate a mini-land bridge system for theWest Coast shippers.

Opening doors to international commerce

World Trade Association addingprograms, seeking new members

By CORA GUINN

The Houston World Trade Associa-tion has presented more internationaldignitaries and decision-makers toHouston audiences than any otherorganization in the city.

Mary Archer, association directorof marketing and information, citesthat fact to demonstrate how theassociation has "opened the doors"of international commerce toHouston for 54 years. Through thepromotion of international trade, through educational seminars, bysponsoring pertinent legislation andsocial activities, the association hasgrown to a membership of more than650.

THIS YEAR the staff and officers

14

are emphasizing attracting newmembers and expanding programsand activities in an effort to increasemember participation.

"As I see it, we’ve just got to ex-pand from all fronts. Houston isgrowing like mad and we’ve got togrow with it, simply to stay on anaccommodating basis," said BernardMurphy, executive director of theassociation.

To meet the goals, the associationhas expanded its staff.

Mary Archer comes to the associa-tion with a great deal of experience inforeign commerce. She is former ex-ecutive director of the Japan-AmericaSociety and was also involved in in-ternational studies and cross-cultural

communications at the University ofHouston.

"I HOPE to combine mybackground in business, organiza-tional development and volunteercoordination to increase membershipand services offered by HWTA,"Mrs. Archer said.

The creation of a "young ex-ecutive" member category, accordingto Ms. Archer, is expected to increasemembership among executives 21 to36 years old.

"We have organized a series ofmonthly forums in which the seniorexecutives have ’executive dialogue’with the young executives concerninginternational commerce today," Ms.Archer said.

BERNARD MURPHY

MARY ARCHER

Ms. Archer believes the "socialaspect of doing business" is signifi-cant and the growing networks ofWorld Trade Clubs reflect this aspectof international trade. "I have foundthat there are two dimensions tounderstanding: information and socialencounters," she said.

OTHER programs scheduled forrenewed emphasis include an array offorums, workshops and expanded ser-vices.

Some of these services and pro-grams consist of:

¯ The Commercial Trade Librarywhere international trade referencesand journals, major world tradeforum presentation speeches, articlesand reports on global economics canbe found. Members can also requestinformation and research onresources available for internationaltrade through the association library.

¯ The Houston World Trade In-stitute, developed this year to provideeducational seminars, workshops andprograms on topical issues andchanges in international commerce.

¯ The World Trade Club, equip-ped with bar and dining facilities, through which the association hasorganized social events for its

members and internationaldignitaries. The club has arranged ac-tivities for delegations of Europeanbusinessmen, Japanese trade mis-sions, the Houston consular corpsand others.

"Country night" is a cooperativeprogram between the consulates andthe association. When an interna-tional official or dignitary visitsHouston, a reception and dinner isgiven in his honor with cuisine anddecorations of his native country.

RECENTLY, the Mexican Con-sulate and the club arranged acelebration of Fiesta Mexicana, honoring the Consul General of Mex-ico, Mario Tapia-Ponce. The fiestawas complete with mariachis andMexican dancers to help com-memorate the celebration of Diez ySeis de Septiembre (September 16),Mexican Independence Day.

The association has becomemultinational in scope with connec-tions in more than 44 countriesthrough its membership affiliationwith the World Trade CentersAssociation.

"We want our members to beaware of and utilize the reciprocalservices available through these inter-

8~ J

national organizations. If one of ourmembers visits London or NewOrleans he can call the local associa-tion and receive the same services as alocal member would," Mr. Murphycommented.

THE HOUSTON World TradeAssociation was founded in 1927. In1976, the association was awarded theprestigous "E" Award for ExportService for its efforts on behalf ofU.S. exports.

"International representation inHouston is growing every day. Backin the beginning stages of the associa-tion we had, maybe, one honoraryconsul representing four or five coun-tries," Mr. Murphy said.

Houston now has 52 con-sulatesnone of the largest consularcorps in the nation and evidence thatthe Houston World Trade Assocai-tion is succeeding in "opening thedoors" to international commerce.

Association memberships areavailable for individuals and firms.Other membership.categories include:sustaining, resident, nonresident, cor-porate and honorary. Members inmost categories are entitled to voteand to attend all programs and ac-tivities as well as to use the WorldTrade Club facilities.
