Varied Summer Jobs For NCE Students For many college students a summer job means lifeguarding at the beach, running the soft drink counter at some country club, or clerking in a depart- ment state. B u t . for 150 Newark College of Engineering students sum- mer work means handling a responsible laboratory position, running a computer, or work- ing as an engineering aide for industry or government. The NCE students in these po- sitions of responsibility are participants ' in the college's Professional Development Pro- gram. By maintaining a high grade average during their prior academic year they qual- ified to hold down one of the special technical positions in one of the more than 100 orga- nizations that cooperate with the NCE summer program. It is a program that is mu- tually-agreeable. NCE juniors and sophomores get the oppor- tunity to put some of their academic learning to use in en- gineering situations and indus- try gets the opportunity to as- sess a great amount of raw tal- ent. Often the Vgettlng to know you” tprocess allows tto student to earn enough for his next year of education and sometimes industry is able to line up engineering personnel it w ill need one or two years hence. Organizations employing NCE men and women this summer include municipalities, state and federal organizations, and industries concerned with elec- tronics, paints and coatings, paper, food, heating equip- ment, glass, plastics, chem- icals, metals, ceramics and public utilities. About 1 out of 8 of NCE's juniors and sophomores are able to meet the rigid academic requirements of a B-pIus grade average (3.0 out of 4-0) and elect to participate in the Professional Development Program. The combining of scholasti- cally-qualified students with companies that can use techni- cally-alert young people dur- ing the summer is not new at NCE. For about 25 years the College has been matching technical-oriented jobs with outstanding students, first un- der the name of Honors Option and since 1963 under the pres- ent name of Professional De- velopment. Area students taking part in N C E ’s Professional Devel- opment Program this summer included: Lyndhurst students— F. David Harris of 448 Haze! Street, and Russel E. Ner- lick, 490 Sixth Avenue, were, respectively, an assistant proj- ect engineer with Blonder- Tongue Oo, and a grade 2, op er* ator with Public Service Elec- tric t Gas Co. NOrth Arlington students also participated. These includ- ed Kathleen P. M artel! of 61 Elm Street, who. was a junior engineer with Esso Research k Engineering Co., Albert J. Ber- ni of 120 Gold Street, who was a painter with Leon Berni and Robert J. Carlquist, 13S Front Street, who was an experiment- al engineer with Worthington Corp. Corporal Morris Buried With Honors Lance Corporal Daniel Mor- ris, the first local youth to die in service in Viet Nam, was buried yesterday in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny. The 19-year-old Marine who lost his life on August 20 while engaged in battle with the en- emy in the vicinity of Da Nang, was given a m ilitary funeral. His body arrived by plane from San Francisco early Fri- day morning accompanied by a Marine escort, Corp. Francisco R. George Addonizlo entered pleas of not guilty for hi* clients and waived preliminary hearing A $10 fine on a fictitious plate charge against Gubilo was paid after to was found guilty by Bivona. Jankowski testified that the car driven by Gubilo with Sa- wicke as a passenger had poll- ed into the Sunoco service sta- tion on Ridge Road and Ruther- ford Avenue and Gubilo had or- dered $5 worth of gas. The po- lice car with Jankowski and Patrolman Robert Downey had followed the car in, noticing it tod only one license plate. When tto policemen started checking out the car, Sawteke left for the men’s room but turned the corner and continued going. Sawicke had the money to pay for the g*s, which was later kept until tto gas bill was paid. Jankowski noticed that tto license plate number didn’t correspond with the registration ahd later discovered the con- cealed weapon—a .38 caliber French-made automatic. Addonizlo said that his client had no knowledge that a ficti- tious plate was on the , car and that he later had brought to po- lice headquarers the proper plates. Bivona noted that the ficitious plate, belonging to a car in Colonla, was on Guglio’s car when it was driven into the gas station. Both were continued on $1,000 bail bond. Bail of $1,000 each also was continued on Eugene Ricci, 2L of 508 Valley Brook Ave., ac- cused of stealing $28 from the cash register of Frank’s Sunoco Service Station, 640 Ridge Rd., and Robert Murphy, 28, of 534 Lake Ave., charged with con- spiracy by Frank Companaro. Jr., of Caldwell. Both pleaded not guilty and Murphy, in Ber- gen County Jail on another charge, requested a lawyer. Bivona pointed out that while he could hear the $28 robbery, he was not sure about the con- spiracy charee and Since the men requested lawyers, he ad- vised them to allow the matter to go the grand Jury so the (Continued On Page 12) Kenneth H. ThU Holiday weekend is coming up with if* attendant macabre rock, roll and smash of death, an<J only you, Mr. and Mrs. and young teen-age America can *tpj rt.

*. It s fun to be young and part of the swing set, your hips and feet swaying and twisting all a 'go-go . . . but thq place for the action is on the dance floor, or home in the family rumpus room . . . not on the highways.

1 Have your fun over the upcoming holiday weekend but remember always there may be an unseen passenger in the back seat or thumbing a ride along the highway. iDon't let him take over the wheel . . . for death will bf riding the roads this weekend and it's up to you whether you wind up a statistic in the morning after newspaper, or come home refreshed and relaxed after a pleasant holiday at shore, lake or mountain.

Millions of cars will be on the road- Highways will be {ammed with people all in a hurrv to get somewhere. Sji drive safely, keep your speed within safe driving limits and certainly the legal limit. Keep your eyes on the roaa. Take time out to rest when you feel your eyes growing weary and watch out for the other fellow. Extra traffic such as can be expected this weekend requires etfr# care and caution.

You can enjoy a safe and sane Holiday QU thij road, so easily, simply by following a few basic rule of common sense and courtesy.

t ' M&.

If you're planning a long distance trip, it wiH mean using for the most part, expressways and High speed traffic arteries. This kind of d.-Ving requires special tech

niques, and the American Automobile Auociaton helpfully has compiled a list of sai|-drivinq tips for expressway travel.

1—Expressway entrance ramps usually lead into an acceleration lane. Do not leave this lane Intil you have picked a safe gap in traffi , signaled and accelerated to match the speed of through traffic.

j

2—Once in the traffic stream, stay in lane until you have adjusted to the speed of other nearby vehiiles. If you must change lanes, increase speed slightly to make wre of: keeping a safe distance ahead of cars behind you. Always signal well in advance your intention to change lanes.

}—Expressway driving means traveling at higher speeds than usijaJ, making it important to keep in mind thet everything therefore happens more quickly. You will need a longer distance for passing and a greater gap between your car and traffic ahead for safety.

4—Keep pace with traffic. Never drive faster than you feel is safe, but remember, that driving too slow on an expressway can also result in an accident by confusing other drivers or tempting them into, rash acts- If you don't feel safe keeping pace with traffic, get off the expressway and use another road where traffic moves more slowly.

I —Make sure your gas tank is full before you start and ch$ck the indicator frequently. Service areas are usually

‘■few and far between.

6—Check your speed periodically. It can be deceptive after miles of steady expressway driving.

7—If you should become drowsy, don't push yourself. Pull off on a safe shoulder or rest area .Take a break. Got out and stretch your legs. When you feel alert again, resume your trip. And while you-re looking for an oxil or safe place to pull off the highway, open the windows and let plenty of fresh air into the car. ,

For all driving: maintain safe following distances in traffic. Be ready for sudden stops. Don't be a bumpor hugger. Always signal ypur intended actions well in advance of maneuvers. Be courteous and tolerant to other drivers at all times. Watch out for pedestrians who might vep into your lane and always yield the right of way to crossing pedestrians. Avoid lane weaving, give full t!mo and attention to your driving, leam to recognize at a glance the meaning of all standard traffic control signs, signals and markers. When driving at night, avoid -'ooking directly into the headlights of oncoming cars. Look instead at the right-hand edge of the rpad. Maintain your car in safe operating condition and drive only when you are in good physical condition. Avoid driving when emotionally upset.

AND Nl-VER . . . NEVER , . . NEVER mix drinking with your driving. Alcohol and gasoline definitely do not mix. And be on the alert for drivers who may have forgotten or ignored this.

One o f our favorite p ieces of reading m aterial is the N ew Jersey S ta te Bar A ssocia tion Law Journal. L ast w eek the

Journal caustically noted “there is no rule to preclude sta te officia ls from crim inal practice, no director from the Suprem e

Court, no opinion of th e A dvisory C om m ittee on E thics, no nothing. S ta te o ff icials can represent persons accused of crim es to their heart’s content — and profit — as they can a lso nix a judge’e appointm ent. A ll that’s appropriate. N ot so the little fe llow in a small job.”

T here ought to be one descrip tive word added to the Journal’s peoration . W e w ould have aaid “sta te offic ia ls can represent persons accused of criihe to their (b lack ) heart’s content.” O nly c er tain kinds of senators are caught in such situations.
