We provide an interactive platform for undergraduate architecture students all over the country by holding

conventions and competitions for various trophies which cover different aspects of architecture.

The Annual NASA Convention: the epitome of all that NASA stands forcompetition, learning and

interaction. At this culmination of NASAs year-long endeavours, students from across the nation and

now, the world, come together to celebrate architecture in its truest form. The vision of the annual

convention is to be a premier, year-round, destination for architectural evolution.

The Le Corbusier is the NASA overall Trophy and is awarded to the college with the overall best

performance at the Annual NASA Convention.

The GRIHA Trophy, sponsored by the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment, Indias

National Rating System for Green buildings,is an attempt to foster ideologies of efficient, environment

friendly architecture in the students of today.

This landscape ideas competition seeks to explore the use of landscape as a medium for change to

revitalize and reactivate the public sphere within urban spaces. Participants are encouraged to create

submissions that demonstrate new types of nature-friendly development that offer choices for sustainable

living in our communities and throughout our region while creating a strong genius-loci.

Another new addition to the list, the aim of the Writing Architecture Trophy is to inculcate the intrinsic

observation capabilities of students to be aware of the real World around them, and make propositions

and express their thoughts in the form of written matter in line with a particular theme. Entries may be in

the form of articles, write ups, essays, abstracts for thesis, dissertation, research documentation which

have been published or may be unpublished.

The Annual NASA Design Competition (ANDC) is NASAs own design competition, which touches upon

issues ranging from current trends to theoretical approach of architectural design

The ANDC 2013 is being conducted by Amity School of Architecture and Planning, Lucknow

This trophy is sponsored by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO). This

process. It aims to understand and appreciate the existing built form of a building and redesign on that

basis satisfying given theme.(G sen trophy)

This trophy is sponsored by the Association of Designers of India and revolves around product and

    industrial design.(industrial design trophy)

The Louis I. Kahn Trophy (commonly referred to as LIK Trophy) was established in 1981 by the Vastu-

Shilpa Foundation, Sri B V Doshi and family. UNESCO New Delhi office, through IHCN, has been

providing technical advice in the organization of the LIK Trophy since 2007. This collaboration between

UNESCO and NASA has been fostered to improve the quality of architectural education in the context of

the historic environment, and the legacy of knowledge, skills and training required to better protect and

conserve this heritage. Through joint activities, the parties wish to increase the awareness of Indias rich,

    diverse and unprotected historic environments.

The very first trophy of NASA, the Reubens trophy intends to display the standard of teaching and the

quality of student work in every college. Along with the above criteria, it is also judged on the basis of the

growth of the architectural student in their journey of becoming an architect. More than for the

competition, this trophy is to allow students to learn and share ideas on varied topics from diversified

regions that the colleges come from.

    The Indian Council of Architecture

The Architects Act 1978 leads to the formation of the Council of Architecture under itsprovisions. It is a body corporate, which provides for the following things:

    1. Registration of architects;2. Educational standards;3. Practice standards for practicing architects; and4. Recognized qualifications.

All over India, COA maintains a registry of architects and regulates the profession andeducational standards. Following points enumerate the responsibilities, powers andfunctions of COA:

Maintaining Registrar of Architects When a person gets the requisite qualification

and undergoes the necessary education under the regulations of COAs minimumstandards, that person is eligible to get registered. Registration is necessary if theperson wishes to practice and perform all other duties that an architect performs aswithout registration, all the above qualifications would be useless, and the person wouldhave no authority to practice. False registration or misusing the title of an architect is apunishable offence, which equals to the seriousness of a criminal offence.

Prescribing Minimum Architectural Education StandardsFor institutions and collegesin India to have the authority to grant qualifications, certain minimum educationalstandards have to be upheld, and these standards are prescribed by COA. Thesestandards also specify and prescribe admission eligibility, duration of the course, staff

standards, accommodation, content of the course and course structure, andexamination rules and regulations. All the colleges and institutions of architecture canbe called upon by COA for information about their courses. COA does this to ensurethat the highest standards of education prescribed by the Act are upheld and manyinspections are conducted for the same reason.

Recognition of Colleges and Institutions of Architecture in India The architecturalinstitutions in India grant certain architectural qualifications, which need the approval ofCentral Government in order to be recognised. The COA appoints a number ofinspectors who inspect the institution for recommendation purposes.

Withdrawal of Recognition of Colleges and Institutions of Architecture in India TheCOA has it in its power to make a representation in front of the Government when itbelieves that the recognition of an educational institution or college should bewithdrawn. This can happen when the inspection (by inspectors appointed by COA)reveals that education standards set by the act are not being followed by the institution. The investigation would include examination of course structure, training, staff, equipment and all other facilities that the institute provides.

Governing Profession of Architects There are certain regulations which govern an

architect such as professional conduct, guidelines for architectural competitions, professional etiquette, professional ethics, and engagement conditions. The ArchitectsRegulations, 1989 enumerates these points, and every architect has to observe andfollow the guidelines of professional conduct stated by the Act. Disciplinary action couldbe instigated against the architect if the guidelines are violated, and their behaviourwould also fall under professional misconduct as per the act.

Make Regulations COA has the power to make regulations even if the newregulations are not consistent with the provisions of the act. It has to obtain approvalfrom Central Government for the same.

Appoint Officers and Manage Fund In order to carry out its functions, COA can

appoint officers and fix their allowance. It also manages the fund through which all itsexpenses are incurred. This fund includes money received from the CentralGovernment.

Every 6 months, the Council has to meet at least once to transact business.

On May 12, 1917,George Wittet,by then Consulting Architect to the Government of Bombay, was

unanimously elected as the first President of The Indian Institute of Architects, an association made of the

past students of Architecture ofSir J.J. School of Art,then known as "The Architectural StudentsAssociation". On 3 August 1922, it was rechristened 'Bombay Architectural Association', which got

associated with theRoyal Institute of British Architectsin 1925, and in 1920 became a National body

under a new name, 'Indian Institute of Architects' on 2 September 1929, registered under the Societies

Registration Act XXI of 1860 as a voluntary organisation of Architects. The only other organisation at the

national level is the Council of Architecture established under the Architects Act 1972 with the statutory

    duty of Registration.[3]

The Northern Chapter of the Institute was started in 1956. Today it has Chapters in numerous states and

further centers in major cities, within those states[4]

An architect is a person trained and experienced in the design of buildings and the coordination and supervision of all

aspects of the construction of buildings.

An architect must be creative and practical, and have an understanding of structure, materials, aesthetics, costs,

regulations, the construction industry and the personal tastes and needs of a client.

The architect must be able to negotiate through these sometimes conflicting elements to provide a creative solution to

a brief, and to bring the solution from idea to reality.

It is the juggling of these various elements that gives the profession its interest and excitement. The wide range of

activities in the practice of architecture allows individuals to specialise in the areas where they have the most skill and

expertise, but all architects must be proficient in all areas of the profession.

The role of the architect has changed over the centuries, from being head builder to becoming the leader of a team of

consultants involved in the process of designing a building, and ensuring it is constructed in accordance with the

    design.

An Architect may be the partner of a firm, a sole practitioner, an employee in an architectural practice, an Architect in

the public service or an academic at an institution.

Architects are professionals who have a key role to play in society: buildings and the users of buildings

are responsible for the majority of carbon emission and it is said that the built environment influences

behaviour. Good design is essential to improving the performance of buildings and our social living

environment. Construction is an important industry, not only in new build, but in urban regeneration,

adaptive reuse, and energy transformation of existing building stock.

A person or entity registered, licensed or otherwise authorized to use the title "architect" andto practice architecture in a province or territory.

The most basic definition of an architect is a professional who is qualified to design and provide advice - bothaesthetic and technical - on built objects in our public and private landscapes. But this definition barely scratches thesurface of an architect's role. Architects serve as trusted advisors, their role is holistic, blending diverse requirementsand disciplines in a creative process, while serving the public interest and addressing health and safety matters.Perhaps, it would be best to describe architects as conductors who orchestrate and take the lead in reconciling all thegoals for a building or other structure. Architects do this by providing solutions through the use of:

    artistic imagination and creative visionto design spaces where their ideas and techniques-representedthrough form, light, textures, materials, and colours-combine to fulfill our aesthetic, spiritual, and culturalneeds;

practical and technical knowledgeto create spaces that are safe, efficient, sustainable, and meeteconomic needs; and

interpersonal skills, psychological understanding and ethical practiceto craft spaces that fulfill thecomplex, and sometimes conflicting, needs of clients, users, and the community.

The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) was initially founded in 1917, as the representative national body of

the Architects in the country and currently has more than 20,000 members. The Institute plays a major

role in promoting the profession of architecture by uniting the Architects of India in fellowship under one

umbrella, to promote the aesthetic, scientific and practical competence of the profession - both in

    Education and Practice.

The institute retains a rich history, built through myriad stories of toils and influence of architectural

education, of the rebirth and growth of an almost forgotten profession, of struggles for existence and the

need to have contextual meaning and value, and experiments towards ushering a newer era of

architecture in the country. As a result, the institute has secured a coveted place in Indias reawakening,

in the sphere of Architecture. The institutes history is also replete with the visions of people, who held the

tenets of architecture in high ideal, thus laying the foundation of a vibrant future for the architectural

    profession in the country.

Today, IIA is proudly represented on national, as well as international committees and communities,

related to architecture, art and the building industry. The institute is affiliated to International Union of

Architects (UIA), Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), Architects Regional Council Asia

(ARCASIA) and South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation of Architects (SAARCH).

As of 2012, IIA has 17 chapters representing 5 Regions - North, South, East, West and Central -

supported by 51 offices / centers. The institute has appointed 18 boards and committees to oversee its

    interests and activities.
