The TAID board has voted to oppose this portion of the two bills and IIDA is supporting this stance. Their position on the matter is as follows: Preserve Interior Design Registration Statute: Elimination of the Interior Design Title Act will cost the state millions of dollars over the next several years. Each Registered Interior Designer pays the $200 professional fee per year as part of their license renewal. $50 is deposited into the foundation school fund and $150 is deposited in general revenue. No interior design registration will result in annual losses to General Revenue of nearly one million dollars. Additionally, registered designers pay fees to cover the costs of operating the TBAE. Repeal of this statute will result in an additional loss of $660,500 of registration feed per year to the agency’s budget. This is money these designers want to continue to pay. There is NO regulatory burden. The registration statute is VOLUNTARY. It allows registered interior designers to compete for large projects. Many large commercial and governmental RFPs require a “registered design professional”. Elimination of this statute would put Texas designers at a competitive disadvantage. Preserve Grandfathered Status: Texas should not renege on a deal. In 1991, Texas passed the Interior Design registration statute. Registration required an accredited degree in design, passage of the national design exam, and two years experience. In recognition of those already in the workforce, Texas “grandfathered” designers with at least six years experience. All registered designers are required to take continuing education courses to keep pace with codes and standards. Twenty years have passed. Grandfathered designers have continued to practice design, start small businesses, and employ constituents. They have completed hundreds of hours of continuing education. Some are nearing retirement age. Forcing experienced proven designers to potentially suspend their practices to satisfy updated registration requirements is unnecessary and unfair. Texas has provided a grand- fathering mechanism to many different professionals. Interior designers should not be singled out for unfair treatment. Thank you for joining us at Legislative Day! Members of TAID, IIDA, ASID, and area students gathered at the Capitol to hear a proclamation that March 5th was named Interior Design Day in Texas and take a group photo with Governor Perry. However, our real mission was to deliver our message (and popcorn!) to each of our Legislators advocating for our profession and educating them on upcoming bills that could affect us. Senate Bill 205 by Senator Robert Nichols & House Bill 1717 by Representative Four Price were just released and both include the requirement that grandfathered RID’s pass the NCIDQ exam by September 2016. The TAID board has voted to oppose this portion of the two bills and IIDA is supporting this stance.

Their position on the matter is as follows:

Preserve Interior Design Registration Statute: Elimination of the Interior Design Title Act will cost the state millions of dollars over the next several years. Some are nearing retirement age. Forcing experienced proven designers to potentially suspend their practices to satisfy updated registration requirements is unnecessary and unfair. Texas has provided a grand-fathering mechanism to many different professionals. Interior designers should not be singled out for unfair treatment.

Thank you for joining us at Legislative Day!

Holiday Party zinger hardware | nov 29

Past Events:

Members and guests of both IIDA and the Austin chapter of AIA joined together for our Holiday Party late in November. Live music added to the atmosphere while attendees enjoyed refreshments and making new connections between the organizations.

Monetary and other donations were collected that went to benefit SafePlace.

Special Thanks to our very generous underwriter: Legacy Lighting and our sponsors: Haworth, Spectrum Lighting, Encotech Engineering Consultants, Portela Steel Doors & Windows, Rockford Business Interiors, MDI Resources, Woodwright Hardwood Floor Company.

Despite the inclement weather, many came out to support their teams and our organization at our second fashion show. This year’s theme, Revolution Runway: Cross Pollination featured couture inspired by nature’s beauty. Nine teams competed and the results were: Best of Show: Gensler, Crowd Favorite & Most Original: GSC Architects, Most Wearable: Texas State University, Best Construction: Sixthriver Architects, and Most Sustainable: PPDS. A por-tion of the proceeds from the event went to benefit TAID as well as Dress For Success, a non-profit organization that pro-motes the economic independence of disadvantaged women.

Many thanks to our top level underwriters: Workplace Resource, FMG, Haworth, Allsteel, Legacy Lighting, Rockford Business Interiors, Austin Business Furniture, Commercial Flooring Systems, and InterfaceFLOR.

ZeroLandfill workplace resource warehouse | austin, tx | apr 21 + 28, oct 20 + 27

Austin City Center’s ZeroLandfill program repurposes architectural materials by diverting them from landfills and upcycling them into our community. Firms across the city combined their library discards which were sorted and weighed, resulting in 40,000 pounds of materials that were diverted from the landfill. This program provides the local creative community, including TIPS on Art Kids Summer Camp, interesting materials at no cost, that they can turn into repurposed art. Everything from tiles, binders, fabrics, wall coverings, laminates, shingles, bricks, and carpet samples came in and were useful to area teachers, artists, crafters and DIY-ers. Studio 8, Parsons, and STG Architecture donated food for the volunteers and this year’s event underwriters. Active volunteers included: Workplace Resource, WilsonArt, and InterfaceFLOR. Workplace Resource generously hosted the events in their warehouse and staffed us with friendly crew.

IIDA Volunteer Day - Treefolks: Ready, Set, Plant! shoal creek greenbelt | austin, tx | feb 9

past events:

Volunteering our time to give back to our community is an important goal of our City Center. We teamed together to represented IIDA in a community service event organized by our sustainability partner, TreeFolks. Our members and their families were among the 150 volunteers who gathered on a Saturday morning to get down and dirty while planting sapling trees along the Shoal Creek Greenbelt. A representative from TreeFolks guided our team to teach us how to plant trees and their impact on our environment. We contributed to almost 400 hours of volunteer labor resulting in 1,640 trees planted along the waterways in Reed Park and the Shoal Creek Greenbelt. Way to go IIDA Austin team!

A little about Armstrong Commercial Ceilings: They continuously innovate the ceiling industry with technology, design and resources. Armstrong continues to amaze ME and inspires me to work with architects and designers on finding really great solutions for really amazing projects!

A little about your rep: I moved to Austin 7 years ago from Chicago. Most people call me KB. I have 3 ½ year old twin daughters. I live vicariously through the design knowledge of all my architects and designers. When I’m not working I am spending time with my husband Nathan, our dog Chuma and our ridiculously cute twin girls Josie and Lexi, running, traveling, spending time on my non-profit life – Girls on the Run, or enjoying a stroll down south congress.

Thank you, Kristi, for supporting your local IIDA City Center!
