Engineering exports to many key destinations drops below 50%: EEPC The level of distress for India's engineering exporters can be gauged from the fact that the drop in several key destinations has crossed 50 per cent while in the case of Malaysia, the fall has been above even 90 per cent, almost evaporating the market, for January 2016 over the same month last year, according to an EEPC India analysis. "It is getting quite bad....Look at Malaysia, one of the top 25 destinations for our exports. For January, 2016 the shipments there plummeted to mere $78.22 million from a sizeable $830.88 million a year ago. When close to a billion dollar disappears from a single market in just one of the sectors, the depth of the problems can be gauged," Chairman of the EEPC India, Mr T S Bhasin said. Likewise, the analysis shows that engineering exports to UAE, the second largest market destination after the US, dropped by more than half to $484.12 million from $991.17 million year-on-year. To the Middle East and West Asia region, which has been witnessing its own serious problems because of a significant downturn in the crude oil prices, India's engineering consignments dropped by 43.88 per cent to $803.39 million from $1.43 billion Y-on-Y. China which was considered an engine of global economic growth and the major consumer of the global metals and products gave Indian engineering exporters a much lower(by 36.35 per cent ) market at $124 million in January this year against $195 million." When it comes to products category, the major fall has been witnessed in iron and steel dropping by .almost 50 per cent to $355 million from $709 million Y-on-Y. Likewise, the fall in copper and products was over 47 per cent from $306 million to $160 million.

Overall, as a pack, the engineering exports that accounted for nearly 23 per cent of merchandise export in January 2016 dropped by 28.07 percent to $4.824 billion from $6.707 billion Y-on-Y. "The worst thing is that such a drop has come about on a low base created by almost a similar drop in the same month last year," said the EEPC India Chairman who added that the exporters expected many more initiatives in the Union Budget for exporters. Out of the top 25 countries, 19 countries recorded negative growth in the month of January 2016, while of 33 engineering products, 22 recorded contraction. Source : economictimes.indiatimes.com

M&M hopeful its big risk in truck segment will succeed Mahindra & Mahindra is making a big and risky bet in the truck and bus business, a segment where the company entered over half a decade ago but remains on the fringe. After showcasing the new Blazo range of trucks at the Auto Expo 2016, the truck and bus division of the country's largest utility vehicle maker came out with an audacious advertising campaign starring Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan - it offers customers the option to return the trucks if the vehicles don't deliver higher fuel efficiency. It took the bold move after correcting some issues the previous models had, such as higher weight, lower fuel efficiency and the resultant impact on the cost of operations - a key influencing factor on purchase decisions. The re-engineered portfolio, backed by a growing market, helped the company double its market share to 3.4% in the past 18 months. Monthly sales have crossed the 1,000-unit mark, and the division is aiming to grow it twofold. Considered as a drag on the overall Mahindra performance with accumulated losses of almost Rs 1,000 crore in fiscal 2013, the division is today operationally profitable. This, in a way, is a re-launch of the Mahindra brand in the trucking space, said Executive Director Pawan Goenka. There is always a risk one takes (of guaranteeing fuel efficiency), but M&M will manage it, he assures. "There is a tremendous amount of confidence in the team. Post several months of testing and rigorous work on the back end on service front, we are confident of delivering on our promise. We are going out very aggressively and ready to take off in the market place," said Goenka. Interestingly, the company is now banking on improved fuel economy which was previously perceived as its weakness. Its new fuel smart technology allows the driver to get optimum fuel efficiency depending on the load and road condition by the switch of a button. And, on the service front, Mahindra is giving guarantee of repair within 48 hours - if the vehicle isn't delivered within that time, the company will pay Rs 1,000 per day of compensation. "Mahindra's aggressive fuel efficiency push through product engineering is highly aligned to truckers' requirement. Operator margins are small and fuel constitutes a significant part of the operating cost, a variable that can be managed with better products," said VG Ramakrishnan, managing director at consultancy firm Avanteum Advisors. Having entered the heavy duty trucks space in 2010, Mahindra Trucks & Buses division was expected to pose a significant threat to the country's top two players, Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland. But over five years since, its market share has remained at 3-4%, which is a far cry from Mahindra's internal plan of 10% when it entered the trucking space. The recent bounce back is not aberration, but is based on strong fundamentals, said the company. "Directionally we are there, our market share has gone back to 3.4%. I am gunning for doubling it in the next two years," said Rajan Wadhera, chairman of the Trucks & Buses division.

"Fortunately, industry is supporting us, as it is growing. The growth is at 35% for the industry, but we are growing at over 60%, which means we are gaining market share. Very soon, I will have a complete range from 3.5 to 49 tonnes - very soon is two years." The new range of trucks offers 10% better fuel efficiency than the competition, Wadhera claimed. With strong demand in the market, with 31% repeat orders and over Rs 700 crore investment on the new range of trucks and buses in the intermediate commercial vehicle space, Mahindra is on its way to become an end-to-end player, he said. Apart from addressing the core of the market with the Blazo range in the medium and heavy truck space, Mahindra will also have a range of intermediate commercial vehicles and buses in the 7.50-15 tonne range to offer incremental growth opportunity. Wadhera said with the improved cost structure, Mahindra should be able to reach break-even point at 2,000 trucks a month. "With the growing market, I am sure, we are not too far from that point," he added. Experts said the fact that Mahindra has already overtaken Tata Motors in the small commercial vehicle is a testimony that it isn't an also-ran. About two decades back, Mahindra was in the same position in LCV business as it is HCV currently. It is just a matter of time when the company finds its own space, said Ramakrishnan of Avanteum Advisors.

Govt. to launch Automotive Mission Plan 2016-26 shortly; likely to create 50 mn jobs The government will shortly launch the Automotive Mission Plan (AMP) 2016-26, which aims to put the automobile industry in the league of top three nations in engineering, manufacturing and export of vehicles, and auto components. The AMP 2016-26, which has been finalised in consultation with various stakeholders, envisages creation of additional 50 million jobs. "In the AMP, which will be launched shortly, it is aimed that the Indian automotive industry will be among the top three in the world in engineering, manufacturing and export of vehicles, and auto components. "While growing in value to over 12 per cent of India's GDP, automobile industry will encompass safe, efficient and environment-friendly conditions for affordable mobility of people and transportation of goods in India, which will be comparable with global standards generating over additional 50 million jobs," the Department of Heavy Industry said. The government and automobile industry have set an ambitious target of increasing the value of output of the sector to up to Rs 18.89 lakh crore under the AMP 2016-26. The plan, a collective vision of the government and industry, also aims to propel the Indian auto sector "to be the engine of 'Make in India' programme, potentially contributing in excess of 12 per cent of the country's GDP. The first AMP was launched for the period of 2006-2016. In the first AMP 2006-16, the auto industry had achieved a target of incremental job creation of 25 million while the country attracted investments topping the target of Rs 1.55 lakh crore from global and local OEMs as well as component makers.

Demand for hollow Aluminium chassis components on the rise Aluminiuminsider.com reported that the demand for hollow aluminium chassis components for use in the construction of electric vehicles is on the rise according to a prominent aluminium casting firm in the United Kingdom. The Coventry-based firm Sarginsons Industries recently related to an industry publication that the firm has been tasked with increasingly more lightweight parts for electric vehicles. Sarginsons Industries has developed aluminium parts to replace traditional steel parts for vehicles from self-driving cars through to buses and recycling trucks. However, replacing solid steel with hollow aluminium while retaining the same degree of strength and safety as the original steel is not an easy task according to the firm’s engineers. MD Mr Anthony Evans said “Light weighting is increasingly important in the automotive sector, particularly in electric vehicles as it contributes vastly to increased battery range and makes electric a highly viable proposition. “Original equipment manufacturers can save hundreds of kilos in weight on an average 4×4 vehicle just by installing hollow aluminium castings instead of the traditional steel.” He added “We’re also currently working on designs for completely hollow aluminium wishbones, combined wishbones and suspension housings and we are even looking at casting an entirely hollow sub-frame. These are very complicated parts which require sophisticated engineering. Manufacturing hollow aluminium automotive components which are as strong as steel is extremely challenging so we’re particularly pleased with the breakthroughs we’ve been able to achieve.” The firm’s products have been tested by research institutions like the UK’s Advanced Metal Casting Centre and the Lightweight Energy Absorbing Aluminium Structures for Transport. Tests have borne out the fact that the hollow aluminium parts designed by Sarginsons Industries are at least as safe and strong as the steel counterparts they replace, if not moreso. Indian Aluminium Scrap prices stay flat; Aluminium Futures decline 1.55% India major aluminium scrap commodities prices stayed flat on Tuesday, while aluminium futures prices at Multi Commodity Exchange settled lower as pressure seen after rise in LME stocks and as China’s exports of aluminium reflected slow activities at factories in the holiday month. US scrap exports tumbled 47% in January & US Ferrous scrap exports shrink to 8 years low as price spurts in March The scrap exports by the US during the month of January 2016 dropped significantly, as per the latest statistics released by the Department of Commerce (DOC). According to government data, the scrap exports totaled 552,559 tons during January this year. The exports during Jan ‘16 were down by 47% when matched with the exports during same month the previous year. The country had exported 1.04 million tons of scrap during January 2015. The largest export destination of US scrap was Turkey. The US scrap exports to Turkey totaled 105,479 tons during the month. Turkey accounted for nearly one-fifth of the total US exports during the month. The second largest importer of US scrap was India. The country’s scrap exports to India totaled 88,405 tons. In third place was Mexico with 63,691 tons. Meantime, US scrap export volumes had dropped sharply by 15% during 2015 to touch the lowest level in nine years. The huge demand drop from Turkish buyers on account of increased purchases from EU sources and the use of cheap Chinese billets in place of scrap were cited as the key reasons behind the drastic fall in scrap exports by the country. US Ferrous scrap exports shrink to 8 years low as price spurts, the importers stay away as the prices went higher and hardly any shipment is being booked.

Accuride Developing Metal-Matrix Composite Brake Drums Accuride Corporation has acquired a patented metal-matrix composite technology it is applying to develop lightweight brake drums for heavy-duty trucks. The announcement came in a presentation to the commercial vehicle aftermarket industry, which is the primary market for Accuride’s steel and aluminum wheels and Gunite-brand wheel-end components and assemblies. “Over the past few years, we have invested in processes and technologies that help our customers remain competitive and compliant,” president and CEO Rick Dauch stated. “Through our lightweight MMC brake drum development and wheel lightweighting programs, we’re focused on creating industry-leading technologies that provide our customers with solutions to the requirements of increasingly stringent fuel economy and emissions regulations.” The brake drum Accuride is developing consists of a cast aluminum design with a selectively reinforced wear surface formed by the MMC. The metal alloy and the matrix material were not described. The brake drums would be suitable for commercial vehicles, off-highway vehicles, and military vehicles, the group noted. Accuride acquired the patented technology last year from Century-3 Plus L.L.C. as part of its efforts to develop lightweight wheel-end components for its Gunite brand, to improve weight, fuel, and operating cost savings for customers. Century-3 Plus is a division of Century Inc., a Traverse City, MI, manufacturer that has conducted materials research for the U.S. Dept. of Defense, including MMC brake drums for tactical vehicles. As outlined by Accuride, the patent-protected brake drum it is developing weighs approximately 61 lb., thereby offering a significant weight reduction over standard cast steel brake drums – up to 100 lb./axle, or approximately 300 lb. for a three-axle Class 8 truck. “The lightweight MMC brake drum also has demonstrated more rapid heat dissipation, improved braking performance and a longer lifespan than traditional cast drums,” according to the group’s announcement. In addition to weight savings, the MMC brake drum is anticipated to offer longer service life to fleet operators, reduced stopping distance, and increased payloads.
