    A. MARKET FOR FRESH FRUITS & VEGETABLES

    1. Market Trends and Opportunities for Fresh Fruits

    Market for Banana is quite promising in the UAE. Bananas import into the UAE increased by324%. However, the market for other fruits like pineapples, grapes and lychee seems to be insaturation phase. There is a declining trend in both the quantity imported and correspondingvalue for these products. India does not cater a larger part of the imports in this market. Butfor lychee originated in India has a whooping 42.3% of the total market share.

    The value of banana imported during the year 2005 was 49,509 tons and the correspondingvalue was USD 22.9 Million. The quantity imported during the year 2006 was 210,379 and thecorresponding value was USD 34.54 million. The major exporting country was Philippineswith 95% of market share.

    The quantity of pineapples imported during the year 2006 was 8,345 tons and thecorresponding value was USD 2.52 million. The major imports were made from Philippines(29%) and Malaysia (27%).

    In 2006 imports of mangoes was 63,506 tons amounting to USD 32.89 million. The majorimports were made from India and Pakistan with 75.8% and 17.8% of the total imports.

    The import of grapes during the year 2006 was 21,239 tons and the value was USD 25.03million. India (32.3% of total import value) and South Africa (24.1%) were the major exportersto UAE.

    For lychee the total quantity imported during the year 2006 was 18,289 tons and India with42.3% of market share caters the majority of the imports.

    2. Import Analysis of Fresh Vegetables

    The market for fresh vegetables is quite promising in UAE. The increase in the quantity oftomato imported in 2005 was 43.38% over the year 2005. Likewise there is a similarincreasing trend for onions and green chillies. India caters to more than 90% of total imports ofonions in the UAE. Indias exports of other two products such as tomato and green chillies arealso significant. Hence there is huge potential for India to increase its market share in theUAE market.

    During the year 2006, the total quantity of tomato imported was 125,803 tons and thecorresponding value was USD 42.43 million. The major imports were made from Jordon (71%)and Syria (10%).

    The total quantity of onion imported during the year 2006 was 254,264 tons and thecorresponding value was USD 50.16 million. The major imports were made from India 92.2%.

    The value of green chillies imported during the year 2006 was USD 12.56 million and thecorresponding quantity was 30,455 tons. The major imports were made from India with 35.2%of the total import value.

    B. MARKET FOR GINGER

    The United Arab Emirates imported 16,857 tons of ginger amounting to $ 9.12 million in 2006representing a decrease in import value by 33% over the previous year. Annual average import growthrate was 33% in value and 11% in quantity between 2003 and 2006. China accounted for 93.2 % of totalimport while Indias market share was 3.5% in 2006.

    Average monthly import prices show an increasing trend toward the end of the year 2007. For theChinese-origin ginger monthly average price of $ 505 per ton in May grew to $649 per ton in December2007. In 2006 average price of Chinese origin recorded at $514 per ton while the price of Indian originwas $1098 per ton.

    D. MARKET FOR TURMERIC

    1. Market Trends and Opportunities

    The import of turmeric during the year 2005 was 9,229 tons which decreased by 10% to 8,314tons in the year 2006. But the value of turmeric imported in 2006 increased by 14% to USD

    4.71 Million from US$ 4.13 million in 2005 resulting an increase in unit price. Unit importprice increased from $ 447 in 2005 to $567 per ton in 2006. India was the only major supplierof turmeric to the UAE market with a share of 99.8% of total imports and Pakistans share wasonly 0.2%.

    D. MARKET FOR SESAMUM SEEDS

    The import of Sesame during the year 2005 was 3,256 tons and the corresponding value wasUSD 2.26 Million. Likewise the import during the year 2006 was 14,457 tons and thecorresponding value was USD 12.62 Million. There was a massive increment in marketdemand for sesamum seeds by 344% in terms of quantity and 458% in terms of value. The

    trend is continuing that shows a huge potential for growth. India can explore the opportunity tocater by increasing its export to UAEs growing market. In 2005 Indian was the largest exporterof Sesamum seeds but in 2006 Ethiopia has over taken India and took the largest share of themarket.     1. Market Trends and Opportunities

    The market for Soya-bean cake had been quite promising. The UAE imported Soya-bean cakeamounted to USD 4.84 Million in 2006 which represents an increase of 65% compared to

    previous year import of US$ 2.93 million. During the year 2006, the total quantity of Soyaimported was 21,584 tons with unit value of US $224 per ton. The major exporters of soya-bean cake to the UAE market were India representing 94.6% of total import, followed by theUSA (4.4%), and UK (1.1%).
