What is IIWC of PKBI?Indonesian International Work Camp (IIWC) is a program that managed under PKBI (PerkumpulanKeluargaBerencana Indonesia)Jawa Tengah –Eng: Indonesia Planned Parenthood Association Central Java/IPPA Central Java- founded since 1998. IIWC of PKBI Jateng organized first workcamp cooperated with NICE Japan in Mijen Region, Semarang City. In the process, we engage cooperation with local organization and some volunteering organization in global level. We started our activity by bringing tolerance in cultural diversity issue in the world.

IIWC of PKBI Jawa Tengah is recently growing and more strengthening as a pioneer in international volunteerism movement. We existed and actively involved in promoting global issue which is raised from local potentials. Not only for international volunteers but also local participant.

This year, we engage with our mother organize PKBI to spread IVS movement to all over Indonesia. With the spirit of Volunteerism, Pioneers, Professionalism, and Independence, PKBI developed 26 branches all over Indonesia. Registered as a permanent member of International Planned Parenthoods Federation, PKBI is involved (IPPF) in global movement as well. For the first step we open chance for your volunteer to participate our workcamp in 8 provinces in 5 islands.

In line with Sustainable Development Goals/SDGs (Link: https://goo.gl/FucWoa)this year, we inspired to develop IIWC program with still related PKBI Jawa Tengah’s Vision and Missions. In the future, IIWC PKBI Jawa Tengah will still organized international volunteering program and more focus on community development for the people to have more control on themselves and better life quality.

Empowering Community

There are so many problems in a community that can neither be solved by the government nor by private sectors. As PKBI was established by the spirit of volunteerism, IIWC of PKBI believes that there are so many people that still have enthusiasm to make a change by their own strength in the community. Community only needs a facilitator to dig out their potential and raise the spirit of volunteerism. This challenge inspired PKBI to develop a volunteerism platform to empower community with groups or individuals who have a different background and cultural but who can still work together as a team. PKBI uses this tool to support local communities in order to reach family prosperity.

At least,100 cadres work voluntary all over Indonesia, and more than 500 youth volunteers that have the spirit to get involved in a movement.Community Empowerment is the way to increase society ability on having their own control upon themselves. By this concept, as our base view on arranging the activities, IIWC of PKBI Jawa Tengah sees every community has potential to be developed as their strenght. By attendance of our volunteers in community, they will be a facilitator to dig deeper their potential and spreading the spirit of volunteerism.

In the other hand, IIWC PKBI Jawa Tengah Volunteers will perform in society as a group or individual who concern on tollerance beneth geographical distances, and cultural differences but they still could work together as a team. We use this tool to support our local partner to reach their aims.

We think that our activity is still relvant at the moment on the road to SDGs era in the near future. We believe, empowered communities will make big impact through society in local level at first, and by the time it will contribute widely in global level.

ElectricityIndonesia uses 220 Volt for its electricity. (Few years ago, the voltage was 110V. But then we switched to 220 Volts.) The voltage in many places is unstable. If you plan to bring computer, for example, you have to get a voltage stabilizer or a UPS.

Moslem Pray Timing1

Muslims pray five formal prayers each day. The timings of these prayers are spaced fairly evenly throughout the day, so that one is constantly reminded of God and given opportunities to seek His guidance and forgiveness. You will hear the call to prayers (Azan) five times a day from the megaphone or loud speaker of Mosque for every praying time. Muslims observe the formal prayers at the following times:Fajr (pre-dawn): This prayer starts off the day with the remembrance of God; it is performed before sunrise. Azan between 03.30 – 05.00 am.Dhuhr (noon): After the day's work has begun, one breaks shortly after noon to again remember God and seek His guidance. Azan between 11.45 am – 12.15 pm'Asr (afternoon): In the late afternoon, people are usually busy wrapping up the day's work, getting kids home from school, etc. It is an important time to take a few minutes to remember God and the greater meaning of our lives. Azan between 3.00 – 3.30 pmMaghrib (sunset): Just after the sun goes down, Muslims remember God again as the day begins to come to a close. Azan between 5.40 – 6.15 pm 'Isha (evening): Before retiring for the night, Muslims again take time to remember God's presence, guidance, mercy, and forgiveness.2 Azan between 6.50 – 7.15 pm

Short Term Volunteering (STV)/Work Camp &Very Short Term Volunteering (VSTV)/Weekend Work Camp2016– 17

Short Term Volunteering (STV) also called as workcamp is an international volunteering program where volunteers stay 1 – 3 weeks for the project. Volunteers work in teams. There are 5 - 25 for volunteers volunteering together in one workcamp. The workcamp volunteers are expected to be team players, be able and enjoy exploring ideas especially on the implementing part of the project.

IIWC Indonesia will start to run Very Short Term Volunteering (VSTV) Program this year. VSTV or as well known as Weekend Workcamp is an international volunteering program where volunteers will stay less than 2 weeks (3 – 5 Days). This program is answering the demand of some volunteers who are not able to stay in a workcamp fully but they have high motivation to participate toward our project (such us employees). We started this program along with our local partner since 2011 in Mangkang Mangrove Preservation Project. This pilot project inspired our other local partner to hold the same program. We recruited mostly local volunteers at that time. This year we want to start to promote internationally this program to our entire International partner.

As IIWC collaborate STV(Workcamp), VSTV (Weekend Workcamp) and long term volunteering to achieve each project goals, therefore, all STV and VSTV project sites are the IIWC Long & Middle term Volunteering (LMTV) project sites as well. While LMTV projects are open the whole year, IIWC workcamps are organized seasonal (winter, spring, and summer). Two campleaders (or one for small group) are volunteering together in the workcamp. They are volunteers who are selected, trained, and mandated several responsibilities to facilitate and lead the workcamps. However, the successful of a workcamp is determined by the team work.

General Condition1. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older.2. English is the official language within the groups. But, most of our local partners are not

capable to speak in English. Basic Indonesian language skill will be appreciated.3. Volunteers are requested to bear their own health and travel insurance.4. All volunteers will have an orientation session the first day (arrival days) of each work-camp. 5. We expect all volunteers to have read and understood the info sheet. Be in time and

stay the entire length of the camp. 6. The departure day will be the last day of the work-camp.7. We expect all volunteers are aware the basic concept of international voluntary service, 8. Volunteers will need to bring a sleeping bag and air mattress.9. Volunteers will join the daily team (Cooking, washing and cleaning team every day) which

will be in shifts.10. Realize that the living conditions in Indonesia is different than at home (no warm water/ not

clean/no air-conditioning/not easy access to international phone or internet/not easy transportation all the times/ no soft beds/ bugs/mosquitoes/different food etc.)

11. All volunteers should understand the aims of the workcamp and realize that learning about the Indonesian way and the social contact is more important than the manual work.

I I W C P r o g r a m B o o k 2 0 1 6 - 2 0 1 7 : S T V & V S T V Page 15

Page 18: IIWC Program Book 2015 - VolunteerMatch.ORG.TW · Web viewSate Ayam / Chicken Satay NasiGoreng / Fried rice NasiKuning / Yellow Rice Bakso / Meatballs Mie Ayam / Chicken Noodle Gado-gado/Salad

12. We expect all the volunteers to be open minded, leave prejudice behind and show initiative.13. English should be spoken with other volunteers in the camp, even if these people do not

join the conversation. 14. Volunteers should understand for the situation to spend times with local people who do not

speak English very well. Volunteers should make the effort in trying to communicate in basic Indonesian or other ways of communicating (work, pictures, gestures, etc.) If you will try, you will be amazed how quick you will learn basic Bahasa Indonesia!

15. Because the people are quite religious islamic here, behavior and dress should be noticed the local culture, especially when in the village or offices. (No tank tops, knees should be covered).

16. Flexibility is expected from everybody as well as the realization that the Indonesian way of life and work is less stressed and should always be fun, no matter how hard the work is!

17. Don’t complain because the schedule might be changed throughout the camp, depending on conditions and situation. So bring some flexibility and stay relaxed and you will avoid a lot of stress and frustration for yourself.

18. Creativity and ideas for the work, discussions, the campsite, excursions and free time are expected to come from the group during the camp. Share your thoughts and ideas!

The Objectives1. To exchange experience and culture, to provide opportunities for volunteers to connect

with and learn from the community through enjoyment of local life and exchange. 2. To promote change with remarkable and public action of voluntary works on

empowering community.3. Mutual benefit between the stakeholder, to empower not only the hosts, but also the

local communities especially in depopulated areas.

Financial PolicyParticipation fee of STV and VSTV Projects should be paid upon arrival. It is usually after orientation session from IIWC staff or Camp Leader. It starts from IDR 1,000,000 toIDR 2,970,000 (or equal to EUR 70 – EUR 205). The participation fee is covering expenses as follow:

- Foods- Accommodation - Local transport for project- IIWC T-shirt- IIWC certificate of participation- Management Fee - Material for the camps
