Updated : 05/29/14 Author changed to Jaime Ochoa. Rewrote entire MAF article to include diagnostic information for MAF

sensor calibration failure.

DESCRIPTION

This article provides overall MAF sensor calibration information including how to record a MAF calibration for a MaxxForce DT, 9, or 10 snapshot

for a case file and diagnostic steps for MAF calibration failures.

The MAF calibration is used to measure the volume and density of air entering the engine at any given time. The ECM uses this MAF to:

- Calculate the correct amount of EGR during engine operation

Limit fueling to minize soot (smoke limited fueling)

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

SPN FMI DESCRIPTION

132 11 MAF sensor calibration failed - Insufficient number of data points

132    13 Mass Air Flow sensor out of calibration

132 14 MAF sensor calibration failed

TROUBLESHOOTING

Instructions on how to record a ServiceMaxx recording for a casefile:

      1.  All intake and boost leaks must be resolved prior to running MAF recalibration.

      2.  Assemble the engine and close the hood.

3. Connect ServiceMaxx to the truck using the NavCom or NavLink cable.

      4.  Engine OIL and COOLANT TEMPERATURES must be at 176F or higher.

5. Run the KOER 'Standard Test'.

6. Run the KOER 'Air Management Test'.

- Address any active codes before continuing.

7. Select the 'Tests' tab and uncheck 'Load Test Specific Session'.

8. Start a 'Performance' session under the 'Sessions' tab.

9. Record a MAF recalibration in the performance session by selecting 'Procedures' then the KOER 'MAF Sensor Calibration'.

- Start calibration procedure. Then select 'Record".

10. Once the calibration has completed, stop recording and attach the snapshot to a Technical Service case file.

Instructions on diagnosing MAF calibration failure:

Air Management System Checks

1. SPN 132 FMI 14 - MAF Sensor Calibration failed, may occur due to a failed component in the air management system

• Faulty sensor (IMT, IMP or MAF)

• Large intake air system leak/exhaust leak (Large CAC leak, stuck open EGRV)

• Plugged air filter

MAF Configuration Checks

1. Ensure MAF Configuration in ServiceMaxx matches ISIS Component information:

2. Check MAF Configuration in ISIS (Enter last 8 of VIN in ISIS -> Select Components Tab -> Scroll down and check which VEPS PROG,

AIR FLOW SENSOR Programmable Parameter # is set)

3. Check ServiceMaxx for what MAF Configuration is programmed into the unit

4. If the configration is not the same, please open a case file with I6 Tech Services with this information. This parameter can only be altered by

Tech Central.

5. Overall MAF configuration to chassis information

MAF Counter Checks

If SPN 132 FMI 11 - MAF sensor calibration failed - Insufficient number of data points sets, engine conditions are not stable to accept MAF

calibration

1. Check to ensure entry conditions were all met (if EOT or ECT become lower than 176 F, test will fail)

2. Once the test fails, please select the 'Signals' tab in ServiceMaxx

3. Click on ID until the list rearranges from largest to smallest. Need to check signal ID 522284 - 522296 and anything greater than 2 should

be looked into (this value increases depending on how often the counter is flagged  anything 3 or larger should be investigated).

4. Per the counter name, there may be an issue with that system (below are a couple common examples of possible failures)

ID CONDITION COUNTER EXAMPLE

522288 Oil Temperature EOT may have moved out of test condition range (EOT must be 176 F or

greater)

522290    Coolant Temperature ECT may have moved out of test condition range (Possible failure: Stuck open

thermostat)

522294  Engine Speed Gradient  Engine speed flunction was too large during MAF calibration (misfire)

5. Investigate issue and make repairs as needed.
