F lowing from the Past…

In 1890, Helen Finley donated her estate to establish a hospital in memory of her husband, health care innovator Dr. John Finley. Donations from the community supplemented her gift, enabling the first 40-bed Finley Hospital to begin providing care to the Dubuque community, more than 120 years ago.

To the Present

Finley Hospital has grown into a 126-bed regional medical facility that offers the latest in technology and award-winning care with a personal touch. In addition to earning accreditation by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, Finley has received numerous honors and awards. These include: • The Platinum Award from the Wellness Council of America • Employer of the Year from the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce • A Top 100 Hospital from Thomson Reuters • One of 100 Great Community Hospitals by Becker’s Hospital Review

Our Homecare Program and Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center have received recent national recognition, and Finley’s commitment to environmental sustainability has been recognized both locally and nationally.

Through the years, the manner in which Finley has cared for patients has evolved, with new medical technology and procedures—but our focus on quality care remains constant, flowing throughout our history.

“Finley Hospital improves the community. It improves the lives of people in the community. It helps make Dubuque a medical center. It brings a lot of patients to Dubuque that would have gone to Mayo or Iowa City or Des Moines.”

– Ed Babka Dubuque Businessperson and Philanthropist

C onstruction Currents

The Currents of Care campaign will help fund the building of a new cardiac, surgery and emergency center on the west side of Finley’s present facility. New construction will include: • 17,239 square feet on the first level for a new emergency room and ambulance entrance • 26,265 square feet on the second floor for surgical services • 21,092 square feet on the third floor for cardiac services

The new Heart & Vascular Center will consolidate all cardiac services, including the cardiac cath lab, cardiology clinic and cardiac rehabilitation into one location.

C ardiac Currents

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the state of Iowa. It is more prevalent than cancer. That’s why it’s more important than ever to transform Finley into a cardiac center of excellence and provide the people of the tri-state area the heart care they need.

The new cardiac catheterization (cath) lab at Finley helps our team of experts use the latest technology to save lives faster. But we must take the next steps to consolidate our heart care services into one location. Like the rush of blood through a reopened artery, we must flow toward the future of heart care.

“When there is an acute heart attack, our goal is to save the life and at the same time, preserve the heart muscle.

So things really have to move very quickly and in an extremely efficient fashion.”

– Dr. Tauseef Khan Interventional Cardiologist

Cardiac Director

No one knows the importance of fast treatment for a heart attack more than Mike Hubbard. His chest pain began at the end of a hunting trip with his grandson. Mike’s wife brought him to the Finley Hospital emergency room, where he was rushed to the cardiac cath lab.

Dr. Khan and his team met Mike there. Within seven minutes, they identified blockage in one of Mike’s arteries, opened the vessel with balloon angioplasty and inserted a stent to keep the artery open.

“Dr. Khan and his staff talked me through the entire procedure. It amazes me that as soon as the blood flow was restored, the pain immediately stopped. From the time the heart attack hit to the stent being inserted, it was less than an hour.”

“Everything in terms of the care was wonderful. They were caring, they made us feel comfortable. They kept us alive and nursed us back to good health.”

–Ted Blanchard (with wife Marilyn) Car Accident Survivors

Page 11: ike the mighty Mississippi River, which connects a ... · on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, Finley has

Ted and Marilyn Blanchard truly appreciate the care they received in the Finley emergency room after a devastating car accident. That’s because they trust their community hospital to deliver lifesaving care with the kind of personalized touch only Finley provides.

After being trapped in their car, hanging upside down over a ravine for 12 hours, the Blanchards were rescued, and they asked the EMTs to take them to Finley.

“With the advancement in technology, there are a lot of changes that need to occur in operating rooms. They need to be bigger. They need to be more technologically equipped with the latest advances in infection control and surgical instrumentation, and they need more physical space. So we’re taking our older operating rooms and replacing them with brand new, state-of-the-art operating suites—a huge advancement for our facility.”

S treamlined Surgery

At Finley Hospital, remaining current in surgical technology is not optional—it’s a necessary part of providing the care Dubuque needs and deserves. When we introduced robotic surgery in 2012, our highly trained and specialized surgeons introduced Finley patients to more precise, less invasive, more effective surgical care.

The most advanced medical technology, however, requires one thing the Finley surgery department lacks—space. Today’s operating rooms, last upgraded in the 1970s, need to be bigger. To accommodate advanced medical technologies such as robotic surgery and laparoscopic equipment, Finley needs to build a new surgery center.

E volutionary Currents

For Finley Hospital to continue our commitment to deliver the best outcome for every patient, every time, we must continuously evolve as a health care organization. To accomplish our mission of improving the health of the people and communities of the tri-state area, we must grow and change with our community’s ever-changing health care needs.

But we can’t do it without your support. As a not-for-profit, community-based hospital, we depend on it. Thankfully, we know Dubuque is a community that takes care of its own. You help Finley care for your family when you care for the future of Finley Hospital.

“We don’t receive tax dollars. Everything that we generate in income goes back into this hospital for its care and staff salaries and improvements. Everything goes back to Finley Hospital and in turn, comes back to our community.”

–David Brandon, FACHE President & CEO UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital

Page 15: ike the mighty Mississippi River, which connects a ... · on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, Finley has

It also takes extraordinary talent to deliver the best health care, and the Currents of Care campaign will help Finley retain and attract some of the brightest and most innovative medical minds.

The warmth and welcoming of our area and its residents make talented physicians like Dr. Khan and Dr. Westerling choose to make Dubuque their home. But Finley must remain committed to providing the resources they need to deliver the best outcomes.

14

“We need to keep attracting people because we need new ideas and constant stimulation by having

new people come to us, both in the Emergency Department as well as other areas of the hospital.

It’s great to have new minds come to the community with their training and ideas.”

–Dr. Pamela Westerling Emergency Department

With your help, it will change the course of health care in Dubuque. Please give generously to support Currents of Care.

“Finley has a clear vision to attract the best of the best, and they’re very serious about it. Our existing physician community is one of the best that I’ve worked with. I think that as health care overall is evolving, it is very important that we attract the best physician talent in a community. That way, we provide the most advanced, evidence-based medicine in the most cost-effective fashion.”
