Wes’s Notes

Boy howdy , hard to believe that summer is upon us. But hen in a couple of days it will be time to make the annual pilgrimage north to Devils Lake. From the reports however this may be the skunky year. Weather predicted to be in a perpetual low pressure situation with cool rainy climate most of the time we are up there. Any way every day spent fishing has to be a time to cherish. Especially when one can spend it with great friends. Come on 3 pound white bass!!

Chapter Happenings.

By now you know that we are no longer going to pull the trigger on the ranges before 7AM. Guess this all goes to the society that we live in. That is not something that we easily accept, but then we are a community made up of a number of different persuasions. It will be up to us to keep trying to find ways to educate our friends and neighbors that the sound of gun powder burning is actually pleasing to one’s physic. Until we do that perhaps we should try to find other ways and means to build neighborhood acceptance and credibility while we enjoy the smell of burning gun powder. We need to find ways to be part of the solution.

If you were one of the members that renewed your membership on line over our web page, did you also print your own range card? Come to find out several members kept waiting for me to send out a range card but the truth of the matter is that we hoped you would punch a print button and be done with it, saving us mucho dinero and saving you much time. However, I would be glad to do so if you let me know your need. Also when you renew after Feb or so your gate card also has been deactivated and must be re-established so that you can open the gate. So if you can’t get in , blame me, but let us know so that either Natalie or I can correct the issue.

Lastly, I must update the lack of progress on our conservation reserve

acreage. We were supposed to do a mid-contract improvement by controlled

burning prior to nesting season. You will note that it didn’t happen and will be

rescheduled for 2018. The reason it didn’t happen was that the burn providers

(Bennet Volunteers) were not able to make the right dates work because of

emergencies, wind conditions and other commitments. We will need to get that

done in 2018 for sure so as to not default on the contract.

Downtown at the Capital

Actually conservation and shooting sports have had a productive season downtown in the big house. Several bills have been passed that can help the future of our fishing, hunting and shooting. We should give a huge kudo to the Nebraska Sportsmen’s Foundation and Nebraska Firearms Owners Assoc. for carrying most of the weight. Because of them LB566 and LB 635 were combined and has been passed into law. It should be a strong deterrent to wildlife poaching as it provides that NE can become the 48th state to join the Wildlife Violators Interstate Compact and in-creases the penalties for most wildlife violations. And example is that shooting at wildlife from a road will have a minimum penalty of $500 and be a class !! misde-meanor . It had been only as $100 fine. And with the compact the other 47 states can sanction folks that mess up here in our state and vice versa. Another biggy was pas-sage of LB584 which eliminates roadside mowing until after July1st which makes for great improvement in wildlife habitat. LB68 by Senator Hilgers made a lot of pro-gress toward the pre-emption of concealed carry rules by local jurisdictions but will require considerable work as it was held over until the second half of the session. Be sure to thank Sen. Hilgers for his work so far. With only a few days to go, almost all debate is now centered on the state budget.

Nationally

The national IKEs convention is looming on the horizon and will start July 25th at the Kalahari Center in Sanduski,Ohio. The central focus of this years conven-tion will be WATER. Speakers and workshops will be geared around the shared mission of the leagues Clean Water Challenge. The keynote speaker Eric Eckl is sure to captivate our members on ways to make a difference and achieve mission success. As a national director and executive board member, I hope to see our budgets balance and our staff be able to focus on the needs of our members. Should you wish to at-tend you may share the 14 delegate votes which our large chapter receives for league matters. And I hear tell the Lake Erie walleyes are huge.

JUNE OFFICE HOURS

During the month of June, our office will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m.

– 1:00 p.m. We can be reached by calling the Clubhouse number at 402.474.6555, or our cell

phones of 402.560.7750 (Natalie) or 402.499.9767 (Craig).

CLUB SHOOTING TIMES UPDATE The board has made a change to the daily shooting hours on our campus. They are as follows: Rifle/Pistol Ranges The hours of operation for recreational shooting are open at 7:00 a.m. or sunrise, whichever is later, and will close at sunset.

Trap Range The hours of operation for recreational shooting are from 7:00 a.m. or sunrise, whichever is later; and will close at 10:00 p.m.

Members Shooting Rules – Please Note Rules highlight: A reminder that a member must be present when any guest is shooting. This includes the children of the members. Members are allowed to bring their children age 18 and under with no additional fees or guest passes. That child is NOT allowed to come to the range and shoot without the registered member. We have seen some of this and have talked to a few of the children of some members to make them aware that they must have the member parent with them to shoot at any range. However, it is impossible to catch these all the time. Please help our club to make sure these rules are followed. Thank you.

Summer Youth Trap League As of this publishing, we have completed the second week of the youth summer trap league. At this time, we have had 106 shooters participating in the six week competition. If you are still interested, it is not too late to join. This is open to 2016/2017 6th-12th grade shooters. Simply show up on Monday night June 5th, our next night of shooting, and regis-ter at the office window. We will resume shooting four Mondays in a row starting June 5th. Shooters shoot one round of 16s and one round of handicaps. Make ups and/or shooting ahead is allowed so there is time to catch up on missed rounds. The cost is $10/50 targets or $60 for the entire program. At the end of the league, we have an awards banquet with a meal for the shooters and several awards will be handed out. All the pulling and scoring is done by parents and volunteers. Come on out and join in the fun!

Appleseed by Tracy Preston

I was lucky enough to have my name drawn, and sponsored by our friends at The Lincoln Izaak Walton League to participate in the Appleseed shoot.

This 2 day event was this last April.

I read up on this event, very wise to do so. This was going to be fun and I was so excited! I love range time! Upon my arrival that day, Ike's was going to be busy, High School trap was taking place as well. I did get to watch my daughter shoot before I got to start my fun.

We were at range 1, if you were at Ike's that day, I am sure you saw us. It was decked out with a display of our great American flags.

There was a dozen or so shooters that day from all over, we had a great class and awesome instructors! I do have to give a big shout out to Morris from Pittsburgh Kansas!. Some of them to gain their Rifleman patch, or move up in their Instructor training.

The shot heard around the world April 19th, 1775

We learned history, most of us had forgotten about, and its really not taught in schools today, and its a very important part of our history.

We went over safety. Yes safety! We can always use a refresher!

Natural Point of Aim, MOA's and mils

Proper use of a USGI sling

Breathing

We shot, listened to some great stories and off to shoot some more! We shot standing, sitting, prone with mag changes. We were timed for accu-racy in some of the lessons. It was fun! I was beat, but couldn't wait for the next day.

Second day, we went over everything and then it was time, if you wanted to see how you scored after going through a timed shoot (AQT). We broke for lunch, listened to some more great stories, then Mike our instructor announced that the time had come, one of the reasons we were here today to earn Rifleman and we had 2, he announced Dennis and then me!! I was so excited!

We had more Rifleman patches later on that day, along with instructor hat color changes as they themselves progressed in their field of training. This was an experience that I will cherish.

Thank you Lincoln Izaak Walton League!

Biography of Wes a candidate for the board.

I wish to offer my candidacy to rejoin the Chapter Board for another term. For those that don’t know me I would throw out the following. I have been an Ikes member most recently for just a little over 20 years and have come to appreciate the activi-ties and philosophy of our chapter greatly. I have been retired most of this time which has allowed me the option of spending time out on the property either pulling a trigger or just fixing things or taking on some of the administrative duties. Cur-rently I am serving as your Treasurer/membership chairman. Membership activities by themselves can be a big challenge as we have over 1000 folks in recent years.

In case you don’t know about me, I am a Kansas transplant having come to Nebraska to work as a fisheries biologist for the

NGPC a number of years ago. Like most current members I was an off and on shooter and watched a couple of sons learn

about firearms on Ikes ranges. After retirement almost 20 years ago I decided that the Ikes had the best conservation ethic for

an NGO and joined the Ikes to continue an association with conservation of our hunting and fishing heritage. One special

interest of mine is try to follow the actions of our lawmakers in the capital and watch for new laws that would negatively im-

pact our activities. And equally important is mentoring young hunters to archery deer and turkey hunt. Beyond these confin-

ing hours I do enjoy serving on the Ikes board of directors and would appreciate your vote in the upcoming election. Thanks

Brad Philson

I have been a member of the Lincoln Izaak Walton League for many years and it has become like a second home to my family, as we have literally spent hundreds of hours on the grounds. Our time at the Ikes has been spent in many ways, including as-sisting with various work projects, enjoying the rifle & archery ranges, participating in several classes & events and many, many hours on the trap range with the Lincoln Southwest Trap Team (which my kids have both been on and with which I as-sist in numerous roles). Several years ago I took classes at the Ikes and obtained my shotgun certification, which has allowed me to better assist my kids, their trap team and others who are new to the discipline.

For those that do not know me, I grew up in the Sandhills of Nebraska, prior to moving to Lincoln nearly 30 years ago. I grew up hunting, fishing, camping and enjoying the great outdoors on a daily basis and I actively work to pass these same passions on to my children and all of the youth that I come in contact with. I am very blessed to be married to Sue Anne and we have an 11th grade son and a college sophomore daughter. For my day job, I work at Union Bank & Trust, where I have been for nearly 28 years, and where I manage the Personal Trust and Wealth Management Department. i.e. I do a lot of work with estate plans, trusts, wills, estate settlement and wealth management.

I am active in the Lincoln Community, having served on several boards, including the Food Bank of Lincoln, the Food Bank Foundation, the Friendship Home, the Rudge, the Izaak Walton, and the Christ Lutheran Church Foundation. I also served as Assistant Scout Master for many years, with Boy Scout Troop 54, and from which my son achieved his Eagle Scout Rank (of note -- his Eagle Scout Project, was to build 10 gun racks for the trap ranges at the Ikes).

I love working with youth and the outdoors and I feel that the Lincoln Izaak Walton League is perfectly positioned to do great things for both well into the future! Those that know me know that I have the passion, the drive, the common sense and the background to be a strong advocate for the Lincoln Izaak Walton League. I would appreciate your vote!

High School Trap by Gene Rippa

The Lincoln Ikes hosted 2 week-end high school and junior high trap shoots at the Izaak Walton trap range. The shoots were held on March 25th and 26th and April 22nd and 23rd. Each year it seems we have more young shooters taking part in trap shooting.

This year we hosted over 1040 shooters for the 2 meets. These young shooters represented 17 schools or clubs. We begin our shoots bright and early at 7:30 a.m. and this year the weather and good team work on the part of the Ikes volunteers, the shooters and coaches allowed us to complete the meets early. We were passing out the awards by 4 p.m.

It is also an asset to have the 7 traps working so smoothly. We can thank a great group of guys who keep those traps working and filled with rocks. We are most grateful for the shooters’ coaches and parents and their assistants who help with the scoring which requires less help hired as was the case in the past.

The weather was great and some very good scores came in. We always enjoy seeing the friends and family members who come out to watch these young shooters enjoying their sport of trapshooting. All the young shooters are welcome. but it is most encouraging to see the Junior shooters developing their skills at the sport. Lots of friendships develop amongst the shooters. It is kind of amazing to have over 1040 shooters out at our Ikes facility shooting trap in 4 days. It takes a lot of effort on every-ones part, but the Lincoln Ikes want to support our youth. We appreciate the Ikes members who make the meets possible, the coaches and parents who support the shooters and we hope to continue encouraging our youth to take part in trapshooting. We can always use help if you would like to take part. Our kitchen is also open to serve up some good food at each of the meets. The Ikes volunteer Team
