Background

A. Program Abstract

Starting in September 2008 the Bachelor of Allied Health Sciences (BAHSc) will award 57 credits towards an honours degree to successful applicants based on articulations for graduates from diploma programs in Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Science, Massage Therapy, Nursing, Opticianry, and Paramedicine. In partnership with Durham College, Georgian College, and The Michener Institute for Health Sciences this program will provide an opportunity for applicants who hold at least a 2-year diploma in a health field to advance their studies and receive an honours degree.

Graduates of the BAHSc will be prepared to assume positions in the health care system which require leadership, organizational and or teaching theory and skills in addition to their original credential.

The Bachelor of Allied Health Sciences is an honours degree in which students have the choice to take a breadth of courses in the comprehensive program or three possible specializations:

Health Administration

Health Information Management

Adult Education

In order to meet the educational needs of applicants the faculty has developed bridging courses to enhance the student's knowledge and ability in scholarly writing and critical thinking.

Prior to beginning year 1 applicants must complete the following Bridging Courses and obtain a grade of 2.3 or higher in each: HLSC 2700 Mathematical Reasoning in Health Sciences HLSC 1700 Writing for Health Sciences

PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students seeking admission to the pilot offering of the BAHSc must be graduates from one of the approved health profession programs identified above with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher (on a 4 point scale). Applicants must hold a current license to practice, from the releVant licensing body.

Prior to beginning year 1 students must complete the following Bridging Courses and obtain a grade of 2.3 or higher in each:

C. Course Descriptions:

Calendar Course Descriptions for existing courses Of the 14 required courses, there are 12 currently offered in the Faculty of Health Sciences and two (2) new course proposals. Note: The prerequisites listed indicate courses from the full UOIT programs. The block credit for the completed diploma provides the required background for BAHSc students.

Current Course Descriptions HLSC 1700U Writing for Health Sciences. This course helps students improve skills in writing and editing health science articles and essays. The main objective is to help students become confident writers. Topics include identifying common writing errors, researching the scientific literature for pertinent information, developing clear outlines that make writing easy, and citing references properly. Students learn how to write research reports and literature review articles, and they learn critical appraisal skills as they write commentaries. This course emphasizes the value of science and health communication in an instant access world, and especially helps students learn the difference between science and junk science.

HLSC 2201 U Introduction to Health Information Management. Introduces the basic principles of health information management as applied to a variety of health and social areas. Explores knowledge and skills in the field of health data collection, storage and process communication. Demonstrates the proper use of medical terminology. 3 cr, 3 lee. Prerequisites: HLSC 1201U, HLSC 1802U.

HLSC 2601 U Introduction to Health Management. Examines key areas that comprise the field of health care management by building on the root disciplines of organization theory, strategic management and organizational behaviour. Topics include the design and managerial roles in health care organizations, leadership and motivation, work team performance, and interorganizational relationships. 3 cr, 3 lee. Prerequisite: 24 credits.

HLSC 2800U Health and Wellness. This introductory course explores the foundations of promoting health and wellness, examines current research, and provides an overview of strategies and approaches used in community settings. The central premise of the course is that health promotion action should assist individuals and groups to empower themselves and bring about change in order to optimize health and quality-of-Iife. 3 cr, 3 lee.

HLSC 3601 U Managing Health Care Teams. The use of well organized cross-functional teams has led to dramatic improvements in innovation, productivity and levels of service for organizations in all sectors. The course will focus on the meaning and nature of

. purposeful relationships with an emphasis on interpreting and facilitating team interactions. Students will deal with issues such as empowerment, team building, motivation, diversity, conflict management, negotiation and change. 3 cr, 3 lee. Prerequisite: HLSC 2601 U or NURS 1420U

HLSC 3710U Ethics. In this course the student will examine theories related to the ethical foundations of health care practice. In particular, the student will examine the professional code of ethics for health professions and the role of the health disciplines in

advocating for improved health care. Ethical decision-making will be explored. 3 cr, 3 lec. Prerequisite: 24 credit hours.

HLSC 3800U Critical Appraisal of Statistics in Health Science. This course offers an introduction to critical appraisal skills in assessing evicJence presented in health science, with a focus on real-life relevance. The application of statistical methods to the study of research questions will be explored in terms of both descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics to be included are: randomized experiments and observational studies, measurements, frequency distribution, measures of central tendency and variability, correlation and regression, sample survey, probability, confidence intervals construction and hypothesis testing. 3 cr, 3 lec. Prerequisite: 24 credit hours.

HLSC 3805U Epidemiology and Health Inquiry. This course will use a case-based format to introduce the principles of epidemiology to disease conditions such as infectious disease, genetic diseases, cancer and occupational/environmental illness. The focus in this course is to understand the burden of illness from a biological, social, economic and political perspective. 3 cr, 3 lec. Prerequisite: HLSC 3800U.

HLSC 391 OU Research Methods for Health Care Professionals: Theory and Application. This course will critically examine a variety of research theories and methodologies employed by both quantitative and qualitative allied health care researchers. The student will be able to critically examine, interpret, analyze and apply findings from published research reports from both human and nonhuman investigations conducted in a variety of laboratory, clinical and community-based research settings. The course will critically examine how published research reports are utilized as the basis for evidence-based ' practice. Students will have an opportunity to engage in hands-on quantitative and qualitative research experiences including formulating research questions, research design, data collection, data base management and coding, interpretation of findings, and their implications for practice. 3 cr, 3lec. Prerequisite: HLSC 3800U.

HLSC 4850U Current Issues in Health Care. This course is designed to assist students in explaining current trends and issues confronting the health care system and health care professionals. Issues include, but are not limited to, technology in health care, the role of interprofessional health care teams, economic and political aspects of health care, influences on health policy, the roles of regulatory bodies, and globalization. 3 cr, 3 lec. Prerequisite: 54 credit hours.

HLSC 4998U Research Project I. The research project provides students with the opportunity, with the guidance of a faculty member, to integrate and synthesize knowledge gained throughout their program of study. The project topic will be selected to include some aspects of the student's area of interest or specialization. Students will be required to organize and conduct a project with a significant analytical component, including consideration of technical, economic, and other broad based impacts. The requirements include a written paper and an oral presentation of the project outcomes. The project will be conducted over two semesters, with the project focus and literature review and the project proposal prepared in semester one and the complete paper and

class presentation completed in semester two. HIM students will include practicum/experiential learning as part of the planning for their project. 3 cr. Prerequisites: SIOl 1020U, HlSC2461U, HlSC 2801U, HlSC 3630U, HlSC3805U, HlSC 3910U.

HlSC 4999U Research Project II. The research project provides students with the opportunity, with the guidance of a faculty member, to integrate and synthesize knowledge gained throughout their program of study. The project topic will be selected to include some aspects of the student's area of interest or specialization. Students will be required to organize and conduct a project with a significant analytical component, including consideration of technical, economic, and other broad based impacts. The requirements include a written paper and an oral presentation of the project outcomes. The project will be conducted over two semesters, with the project focus and literature review and the project proposal prepared in semester one and the complete paper and class presentation completed in semester two. 3 cr. Prerequisite: HlSC 4998U.
