IL&FS probe: ED summons RajThackeray, Manohar Joshi's son

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, Aug 19:

The Enforcement Directorate(ED) has summoned MNS chiefRaj Thackeray in connection withits money laundering probe in theIL&FS alleged payment defaultcrisis, officials said today.

It had also called UnmeshJoshi, son of former state chiefminister and Shiv Sena leaderManohar Joshi, in the same case,following which he deposed beforethe central agency in Mumbaitoday, they said.

Unmesh Joshi's statement hasbeen recorded under thePrevention of Money LaunderingAct (PMLA), they said.

Joshi told reporters outside theED office that he believes that he isrequired to join the probe in con-nection with the IL&FS case andthat he has not received any ques-tionnaire in this context from theinvestigators.

The officials said theMaharashtra Navnirman Sena(MNS) chief has been asked toappear before the investigatingofficer of the case on August 22 atthe agency's zonal office inMumbai.

The MNS dubbed as "politicalvendetta" the ED move to issue thenotice to its chief to join investiga-tions.

"Raj Thackeray created a sen-sation during the Lok Sabha pollcampaign earlier this year. It had asignificant impact on people and toavoid a similar challenge ahead ofthe Maharashtra Assembly elec-tions, the ED has issued the notice.It is a case of political vendetta,"MNS spokesperson SandeepDeshpande told reporters inMumbai.

The federal agency is probingThackeray's involvement in the

case in connection with the IL&FSgroup's loan equity investment ofover Rs 850 crore in a companycalled Kohinoor CTNL.

The company was promotedby Unmesh Joshi and is construct-ing Mumbai's Kohinoor Squaretowers.

Thackeray and Unmesh Joshihad jointly bid for some assets aftercreating a consortium but later theMNS supremo quit.

"The Kohinoor deal is very oldand Thackeray exited it long timeback. I wonder why the Centre hascome up with the inquiry notice solate," Deshpande said.

He alleged that the ED has"become a tool to suppress ourvoice".

"If the government takes anyaction with prejudice against RajThackeray, we will protest onstreets," Deshpande said.

IL&FS had invested over Rs200 crore funds in KohinoorCTNL and is said to have suffereda loss in the deal.

The ED, it is understood, wantsto look into the entire transactionand hence has summoned the two.

It had already questioned exec-utives linked to Kohinoor CTNLearlier.

The agency had last week filedits first charge sheet before a spe-cial court in Mumbai in this caseand had attached assets worthabout Rs 570 crore.

It had filed a money launder-ing case in February this year onthe basis of an FIR filed by theEconomic Offences Wing (EOW)of the Delhi Police.

In the charge sheet, the agencyhas alleged that the senior manage-ment of IL&FS indulged in acts ofcommissions and omissions lead-ing to illegal personal gains to themat the expense of the company.(PTI)
