ConurbationTo the west of Athens, the town of Ilion is oneof the largest communes in the Attica region. Itcovers 850 hectares, 650 of which fall withinthe "town plan". For the past twenty yearspopulation and infrastructures have experiencedconstant growth and development. Today,however, the town is facing major problemsbrought about by the sheer density of theconstructed space and the inadequacy of itinfrastructures.

SiteClose to Radiofonia, the study area is shortly tobe integrated into the "town plan". Currently itis relatively unbuilt.

The study area is particularly interesting in thatit is crossed by Thivon Avenue, which links theport of Piraeus and the new Spata Airport, viathe Attica motorway. Other important elementsare the proximity of the "Park of EnvironmentalInterest", the presence of the old ERT radiostation (destined to become a museum), andthe Fleva ravine riverbed.

ProgrammeWhat is sought is the insertion of a resourceful,original project into the region which will make it anattractive place to live, by inventing a new approachto public spaces. Furthermore, it must provide themeans by which to link the two sectors separated byThivon Avenue, while ensuring good protection fromtraffic noise.

Issuesfunctional : The regional authorities want to transform an over-denseurban landscape into one with more "appeal", whose qualities are to bedefined.

social : The aim is to regenerate and upgrade an area by qualityinnovations linked to housing, developing the area's environmentalaspects for recreational activities.

perceptual : The environment and how it is treated is to play anessential role in both the regeneration of the urban fabric and thequality of the housing proposed.
