Illumination Tutorial  www.FlorenceDesignAcademy.com  Image D  Dear Architects and interior designers, this is one of my tutorials that I wrote for my students of the Florence Design Academy ( www.florencedesignacademy.com ). This tutorial is about the illumination of a room which is illuminated by sunlight coming trough a window ( ideal for living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms ). There are many different illumination techni!ues that I teach for a interiorrendering. This one is !uite easy. "e will use # different kind of lights. $ne is the %&' sot light% and the other is the hotometric %free area light%. efore we begin it is very imortant to inform you that we will use %mental ray% as render engine ( 3d studio Max 8). &ental ray is a very stable render engine, and it allows to have very realistic renderings. *ince we are using &ental ray for this tutorial it is very imortant to use %real measurements% for all the interior+furnitures that we have to create. $therwise the result will not be otimal. It would be imortant to have already a bit eerience with the mental ray settings since this tutorial will not elain all settings ( settings about rendering and materials are in other tutorials of the FDA ). The first light ( mr area %sot% light ) must be located outside the room. -ou must move the target of the light trou gh the window and lace it inside the room ( like on image ). image 1.) A.) First rendering with only a mr area "spot" light Final !ather enaled /et0s see a few settings. *elect the light and go to the modi#y anel. $ver there check %shadows on% and select ray traced shadows ( this is necessary whenever you will make renderings with mental ray). I ut in the multilier slot 1.2, but this doesn0t mean that you must have the same number since later we will add other lights which will influence the brightness of the room. 3hange the colour to a very bright orangeyellow colour to simulate the sun rays colour. In 4Area light arameters5 (modify anel) you have the ossibility to make the shadow softer increasing the si6e ( hight, width ) of the light. To give the imression that outside t he room the environment is very bright ( like in t he final rendering image D) you must
