The tour of the SOUTH/SOUTHEAST ASIA LIBRARY will highlight the Indochina Family Archive, the Legacy of Tjong Yong Hian
張榕軒 (1850-1911) Archive, selected works of the Southeast Asia Chinese overseas collection, and a distinctive rare book exhibition on Chinese Classical Fiction in Romanized Malay: Preserving Baba Malay Literary Heritage in Singapore and Malaya.
The tour of THE BANCROFT LIBRARY will highlight material from the 19th through the 20th century documenting the experiences of the Chinese in California and the American West including photographs, manuscripts, paintings, and prints.
The tour of the C. V. STARR EAST ASIAN LIBRARY will include a welcome orientation to the library building, highlights of Chinese overseas primary and secondary sources as well as a featured exhibit on the Paul Kendel Fonoroff Collection for Chinese Film Studies.
The tour of the ETHNIC STUDIES LIBRARY will highlight unique material related to Chinese American and Chinese Overseas communities including the Him Mark Lai 麥禮謙 archival collections and the featured exhibit Herstory: Chinese American Women, 165 Years of Struggle and Success curated by Dr. Chang C. Chen 邱彰博士.

THE CHINESE OVERSE A S SYMPOSIUM at the University of California, Berkeley, celebrates the
intellectual contributions of Berkeley’s research on Chinese
communities overseas, including its archival collections from
around the world. UC Berkeley created one of the first Chinese
American studies programs in North America and holds one of
the world’s largest Chinese American archives.
This event will focus on the stories of diverse Chinese
Americans, from gold miners to railroad builders, from
agriculture and factory workers to entrepreneurs and
politicians, from student activists to world-class scientists and
engineers. The keynote address, presentations, and tours of
various UC Berkeley libraries will highlight the past, present,
and future of Chinese overseas scholarship and curatorship.

Fugitive Histories: Reading Chinese Lives Across Archives Penny Edwards, Associate Professor, Department of South & Southeast Asian Studies
Chinese American History, Teaching, and Activism Dr. Harvey Dong, Lecturer, Department of Ethnic Studies
Dr. Harvey Dong will discuss the activism behind the creation of Asian American Studies and how the rediscovery of early Chinese American history has influenced generations of students. He will draw upon his experience as part of the Third World Liberation Front student strike of 1969 that led to the creation of Ethnic Studies and African American Studies, his involvement in the Asian American movement, as well as his long tenure as a lecturer in Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies at UC Berkeley.
Preserving the Grassroots: Chinese American Studies and Archives at UC Berkeley Sine Hwang Jensen, Asian American Studies & Comparative Ethnic Studies Librarian, Ethnic Studies Library
Sine Hwang Jensen will share her experience curating one of the world’s largest Chinese American archives at the Ethnic Studies Library. She will highlight the intellectual legacy of Him Mark Lai 麥禮謙 and his research collections as well as other scholarly collections that document more than a century of life in the Chinese American community in California and beyond. She will also discuss the community-based perspective and collaboration that guide the collection development priorities and mission of the archives. Chinese American Collections in California Theresa Salazar, Curator, Bancroft Collection of Western Americana, The Bancroft Library
Theresa Salazar will discuss The Bancroft Library’s historic collections and recent acquisitions related to the experiences of the Chinese in California. The collections include a wide array of formats: manuscripts, photographs, paintings, ephemera, books, and periodicals. She will talk briefly about the Chinese in California, 1850-1925 digital archive, which includes a wealth of documents from The Bancroft Library, the Ethnic Studies Library, and the California Historical Society.
Collecting Chinese Overseas Materials in East Asia Jianye He, Librarian for Chinese Collections, C. V. Starr East Asian Library
Jianye He will offer an overview of the Chinese overseas collection highlights and her collection of primary sources published in China. She will discuss her collaborative partnership with other UC Berkeley librarians to collect Chinese overseas materials published beyond China. She will advocate how best to promote Chinese overseas collections to better serve scholarly communities.
Promoting Southeast Asia Chinese Overseas Studies: Challenges & Opportunities Virginia Shih, Librarian for the Southeast Asia Collection, South/Southeast Asia Library
Virginia Shih will share her experience in promoting Southeast Asia Chinese overseas studies at Berkeley through collection building, exhibitions, site visits, publications, and international conference presentations. She will also elaborate on emerging opportunities and global trends for preserving the cultural heritage of Chinese overseas studies.
