2.260 Egyptian Lacquer Manufacturing Company Building, 3052 West Carroll

Avenue, completed 1926, Lockwood, Greene & Company, architects. Fritz W.

Albert, sculptor. Material: terra cotta by the American Terra Cotta and Ceramic

Company. Small terra cotta panels displaying artistic interpretations or

facsimiles of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs appropriately appear at numerous

locations on the façade of the Egyptian Lacquer Manufacturing Company

Building. To most observers these appear to be authentic representations of

that written language that comprised some 5,000 distinct symbols or

characters, and which was employed by the ancients from approximately 3200

BCE to 400 CE. Of course the employment of these hieroglyphs, with a

selection of other Egyptian-based vignettes, directly references this company’s

name and completes a convincing tour-de-force design offered by the architects

and terra cotta modelers.

2.261 Reebie Storage Company Building, 2325 North Clark Street, completed 1923,

George S. Kingsley, architect. Fritz Albert of Northwestern Terra Cotta

Company, sculptor.

The origins of these ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs were presumably borrowed

from artwork found within a pharaonic tomb or from those discovered upon

temple walls; precisely which dynastic period was sourced is elusive and only

generic images may have been employed. After all, this building was

constructed not as a museum, but as storage warehouse. In contrast with—

and as an important distinction—the hieroglyphic panels found upon the

façade of the Egyptian Lacquer are represented in intaglio (the lines and figures

are incised or cut into the surface) while those of the Reebie are represented in

cameo (the background is recessed allowing the figures to stand out in relief).
