My answer to those naysayers is we have always gone forth in this District, working selflessly as a team, and if this effort does not come to be this Lion Year, we have set into motion to make it happen when it happens. Besides, proverbially speaking, how old will you be tomorrow if you do not try today!

World of Vision Through Service

April has been a pivotal busy month as we set into motion many innovations that only time will tell if they were planned with foresight or “what-were-you-thinking”! That is the operative word: “thinking” as nothing happens unless you think or I would like to call it “Imagine”. Throughout our journey, we have used my theme, “Imagine” A World of Service through Vision to continue to “Strengthen the Pride” which is the theme of our International President, Joe Preston. I believe we have achieved what we collectively have sought for our District throughout the past ten months and all of you have been an essential element in making all of this happen. During April, we spent a week with many of you, utilizing the guidelines of Lions Club International New Club Consultant, PDG Ronnie Martin from Texas, in Chartering the Natomas Lions Club. We are currently in the final stages of making this happen. While this was ongoing, we welcomed another Lions Club International New Campus Club Consultant, PDG Paul Baker from Canada, to help us Charter the Sac State Hornets Campus Club. We plan to have our “boots” on the ground by mid-May to Charter a West Sacramento Lions Club … so please contact me to be a significant part of this historical event. Our Diabetes Branch Club may also become a fully Chartered regular Lions Club soon. Therefore, as you can surmise, District 4-C5 never sleeps! Many have said with less than three months to go on our watch, why do I want to expend all that effort --- “Just cruise into the sunset”! My answer to those naysayers is we have always gone forth in this District, working selflessly as a team, and if this effort does not come to be this Lion Year, we have set into motion to make it happen when it happens. Besides, proverbially speaking, how old will you be tomorrow if you do not try today!

The District 4-C5 Convention Committee has worked tirelessly and regularly for the past nine months to make our District Convention May 8 to 10, 2015 at the San Ramon Marriott Hotel better than ever. There will be something for everyone including the return of several games from the past, the cherry pie-eating contest, Officers training, Area 1 Student Speaker Contest and an opportunity to meet our District guests, International Director Steven Tremaroli and his wife, Lion Marianne from New York. I will be so honored for you to attend, share, and reap the bountiful wealth of information, fun and camaraderie we know as Lions. If you have not reserved your attendance at the “Double Nickel Reception” for PDG Dr. Carl E. Burson, Jr. please contact me. Fifty-five years of Lionism around the world for this remarkable Lion, like the many we have in our District, but May 24, 2015 from 11a to 2p is his day! A nominal donation of $15 for a Gourmet French Dip Beef sandwich with all the fixing’s at the Roseville Sunrise Clubhouse has been planned to toast or is it roast PDG Carl who in one way or the others has touched many of us with his “sage” advice. Join us on June 13 for our New Member Night honoring all new members and their sponsors at the Robinson Community Center on Norwood Avenue, Sacramento. An exceptional program has been arranged and anyone requesting to present a Melvin Jones Fellowship, please let me know. Additional information may be found on the District website. I would love to share a climb to the top of Diamond Head, attend a luau, walk in the International Parade, have a mai tai, or just snoozing on the beaches of Waikiki with you at the International Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii (June 26 to 30, 2015) as we ring in our newly installed District Governor and Lions Club International Officers for the next Lion Year. My Executive Cabinet has been working with the incoming Executive Cabinet for a smooth and seamless transition. All active Certified Guiding Lions have been assigned to various Clubs to keep them “healthy” and the Club Excellence Process has been implemented throughout the District. Plans are in place to participate in the celebration of our Lions Club Centennial in 2017. Many of our clubs plan local events within their respective communities. I encourage the District’s support and your bragging about your events on our District’s website and shout out to all Lions member’s subscribers. With only 61 days remaining in our Lion Year, it is far from being over for us, to continue to innovate, so stay tuned! Mahalo, Do Jeh, Gracias, Tak, arigatô, Grazie, Salamat Po, Tack, Efhristo, Merci, Sukria, Danke, Terima Kasih, Kop Khun, Thanks! With the greatest of respect for all of you and what you do, District Governor Erv, CS Cat, and the entire Gon Family

Step up to the Plate and “Serve”

May is here. My goodness where has the year gone. In the 90’s by the weekend. Our April showers were almost non-existent but oh my goodness aren’t the May flowers beautiful. Lion Sheri and I have had the opportunity to travel a lot over the last month and have heard some very good stories with respect to how Lions outside our District do what we do. One club provides breakfast for an elementary school 3 times a week. The breakfast items are donated and the 3 hours a day by 5 club members would seem a stretch for most clubs but there are folks waiting in line to help out. I asked how is that possible, “Easy” they say, “we just get up and smell the roses every day and realize how fortunate we are.” Aren’t all we Lions that way? We have two very special events coming up and all of us should have them on our calendar. The first is our District Convention. We should want to pay tribute to Governor Erv and Cabinet Secretary Cat Gon. They have done a marvelous job and what better way to honor them with our presence. There are lots of fun things planned for young and old alike. See you there. The second special event is the long awaited, much planned, Special Kids Day. Our very own Governor and Council Chair husband and wife team of Bob and Sue Olin of Lincoln Hills Lions Club and the wonderful folks that are helping put this event together can certainly use your resources, both manpower and financial to put this District event over the top. They need help in most areas. Please give them a call. Please take a few minutes to stop and smell the roses. You’ll be glad you did. See you around the district..

Foresthill Lions Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser

Foresthill Lions Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser Peppermint Patty for Sage Results

There’s a saying: “It takes a village to raise a child.” With the combined team effort of the Lions and 4-Wheelers Clubs, our little village raised over $6,000 to augment the fund to bring Allergy Alert Dog, Peppermint Patty, home to three-year-old Sage Bowles. It was a gorgeous Sunday morning in the Sierra to cook and serve the Pancake Breakfast outdoors to over 200 attendees at the Starlite Café in Foresthill. When all the proceeds are tallied, we expect the fund will have close to $15,000 of the $20,000 needed to bring Peppermint Patty home permanently. Our Club was pleased to have a surprise visit from 2nd Vice District Governor Kumar Kalagara to support our efforts. The Bowles Family wishes to thank those Lions Club who made a donation to Angel Service Dogs on their behalf and everyone who worked tirelessly to make this fundraiser a “howling” success.

LIC Webinars - (2014-2015 Schedule)

Lionism as a Past District Governor Intended Audience: District Governors and Past District Governors Wednesday, 5/6/15, 2:00pm, PST and Friday, 5/8/15, 9:00pm, PST Lionism as a Past District Governor is an honor which offers both challenges and opportunities. In this webinar we will explore the characteristics and qualities of a Past District Governor, the unique challenges of Lionism as a Past District Governor, and possible roles a Past District Governor could pursue that are both personally satisfying and that further the mission and goals of LCI. Webinars are virtual trainings generally one hour long that are conducted online with a group of participants and instructors. Participants use the Internet to connect the group members with the instructors. Most webinars have one or two instructors and a moderator/host. Participants view a PowerPoint presentation and polling questions on their computer. They listen to the instructors either via their computer speakers or headset. The participants may use the phone for audio/speaking or a computer headset with microphone to interact in discussions and respond to questions asked by the instructors, similar to training conducted in a classroom.
