Taking fans on a psychedelic journey

Visual spectaculars have become increasingly popular in the musical entertainment world, with big acts continually upping the production value of their concerts with immersive screens, exploding 3D imagery, and interactive techniques. Imagine Dragons’ Smoke+Mirrors tour was literally that – utilizing various visual tricks to fool the eye and shock the senses.

“Imagine Dragons began with a provocative ‘smoke and mirrors’ concept based on the notion that things aren’t always what they appear to be,” comments Creative Director Jesse Lee Stout, of new media and entertainment studio Moment Factory, who managed the content, lighting, automation and stage design of the show.

The design team created eight LED columns to serve as massive multimedia screens for constantly morphing and shapeshifting video projection. Moment Factory developed the groundbreaking video content, which was completely driven by Barco XHD-400 media servers. A small scrim section was also brought to life using Barco’s HDF-W26 projectors with built-in ImagePRO Athena™ technology for fl exible scaling.

Next, show creators tackled the lighting, creating surprising moments – where the video content mimics the lighting – by aiming spotlights at the video walls. Stout, working with Lighting Designer Sooner Routhier, specifi ed 44 High End Systems Solaspot Pro 1500 fi xtures leveraging the light’s clean, crisp blending and fast shutter speed, which was essential for mirroring the musical dynamics of various songs.

Sophisticated, yet easy to use

Despite its bold, raw power enabling fast end-to-end show design, creation, setup and control, the XHD-400 media server couldn’t be easier to use. Video producers can easily develop their show from idea to realization, simplifying 3D visualization for projection mappings and ultimately simulating an entire show for convenient preview.
