    Special Studies

    MBA students in IME department, IIT Kanpur are required to do two special studies courses

    during their final year. The courses are spread over two semesters one course per semester.

    !pecial studies offer students an opportunity to engage in meaningful and productive self"

    study under the mentorship of a faculty. The mentor can #e from the IME department or any

    other department in the Institute. $%&' provides appropriate guidelines on the matter of

    choosing a mentor.

    Through special studies, learners are e(pected to acquire, upgrade and enhance their formal

    communication s)ills, develop independence of thought, sharpen creative decision ma)ing,

    application of tools * techniques and appreciate the meaning of achievement.

    !tudents should plan their special studies to meet one or more of the following o#+ectives

    -. To plug gaps/ in e(isting su#stantive course contents

    0. To advance )nowledge in specific areas of management

    1. To apply )nowledge acquired through compulsory and elective courses to practical

    pro#lems.

    %o& to Meet t'e !"#ecti$es

    !pecial studies can involve reviews of pu#lished materials on recent and developing #usinessrelated topics, data acquisition primary and2or secondary data primary data can #e o#tained

    it through surveys, e(periments, interviews and other methods of data collection secondary

    data can #e o#tained from credi#le sources/ and analysis, development of cases, and real"time

    study of industrial processes. Emphasis on conceptual understanding, methodological

    scientific/ approach, and clarity and precision in report writing and presentation will provide

    an edge.

    !tudents should e(plore and identity some options in areas of interest for special studiessometime during the preceding semester. The specific topic and delimitation can #e done in

    consultation with the mentoring faculty at or #efore the #eginning of the appropriate

    semester. Individual mentors have different e(pectations which the student should understand

    and meet. These e(pectations can #e different from the general e(pectations as a course

    requirement.

    E$aluation

    %erformance in special studies will #e evaluated #y a committee as formed #y the $%&'. In

    general, evaluation will #e #ased on two components a written report su#mitted #y the

    deadline as announced #y the $%&' which will generally #e two wee)s #efore the end"semester e(amination/ and presentation.

    As in other courses, there will #e continuous evaluation. A mid"term presentation will #e

    evaluated to provide feed#ac) to the student as required. The mid"term evaluation will have

    can we decide a faculty meeting weight towards the final evaluation. The weights for the

    different components and the mid"term evaluation will #e as announced #y the $%&'.

    In addition, the evaluation done #y the committee, instructors may choose to evaluate

    students in their personal capacity and provide the necessary feed#ac) to the committee. In

    general, any such evaluation will #e #ased on a written report presentation and response to

    some questions an individual instructor may decide to as) the student.
