The Venue

Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT), Educity, Johor Bahru. (www.nmit.edu.my)

NMIT takes pride in hosting this year’s IMEC at its campus at Educity. Educity is a fully integrated education

hub that comprises universities and institutes of higher education, student accommodations, as well as

recreational and sports facilities. Located at the Multivarsity Complex within Educity, NMIT is the sole

maritime college, with two lecture theatres, a wide range of facilities, that will provide a conducive

environment for a successful conference.

Johor Bahru (JB)

The second largest city in Malaysia, JB is an industrial, tourism and education hub. It is rich with century old

traditions and a multicultural society that guarantees a variety of people, culture, and food.

Climate

Johor, like most parts of west Malaysia is generally hot and humid due to the location of Malaysia that is

near to the equator. It has a mean temperature that ranges from 27 to 30 degrees. It is wet in Johor during

the inter-monsoon periods which is from April to October. However, during other times of the year, Johor is

usually dry with occasional showers.

Currency

The local currency is Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). However credit cards are widely acceptable.

Visa

Foreign nationals who require a Visa to enter Malaysia must apply and obtain a Visa in advance at any

Malaysian Representative Office abroad before entering the country. Visa which has been granted is not an

absolute guarantee that the holder will be allowed to enter Malaysia. The final decision lies with the

Immigration Officer at the entry point.

Electricity and Water

The voltage used in Malaysia is 230/240 volts -50hz. If your electrical appliance uses 110/120 volts, you will need to use a transformer/converter to step down the 230/240 volts Malaysian voltage to your 110/120 volt appliances. Failing to do so will damage your electrical appliances. Malaysia uses the British Standard BS 1363 domestic AC power plugs and sockets.

Accessibility

Most SIM-Cards will work in Malaysia via roaming service. Most hotels provide Wi-Fi connections as well as

the NMIT campus.

ABOUT JOHOR BAHRU

Page 3: IMEC 27Johor, like most parts of west Malaysia is generally hot and humid due to the location of Malaysia that is near to the equator. It has a mean temperature that ranges from 27

Arriving in Kuala Lumpur

The capital city of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur and its main international airport is the Kuala Lumpur

International Airport (KLIA) which is situated319km away from the Netherlands Maritime Institute of

Technology. Delegates are encouraged to book a flight to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Seeing as Johor

Bahru is located at the Southern tip of peninsular Malaysia, delegates are encouraged to book a flight from

their respective countries to Kuala Lumpur first before booking a connecting flight to Senai International

Airport (Johor Bahru).

Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Johor Bahru (JHB)

From KLIA, delegates will then have a few choices of connecting flights to Johor Bahru:

Malaysia Airlines departs from KLIA.

AirAsia and FireFly are two of Malaysia’s budget airlines and departs from KLIA2. There is a train service that

links KLIA to KLIA 2. The fare is Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) 2 and the tickets can be bought upon arrival at

KLIA just before the delegates exit the Arrival Hall.

The connecting flight to Johor Bahru is approximately 45 minutes. Upon arrival, NMIT will provide the

delegates with a shuttle service from the airport to their respective hotels which are 15 to 20 minutes away.

This free shuttle service will be provided twice on 11 October 2015 at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m..

Delegates from Neighbouring Asian Countries and Australia may have direct flights to

Senai International Airport through Air Asia (http://www.airasia.com/).

Arriving in Singapore

Delegates are also given the option to land in Singapore through Changi International Airport. However, this

may cause inconveniences as travel time from Singapore to Johor Bahru may extend to 2 hours or more as it

will require the delegates to cross over to Johor Bahru via the Causeway.

There is a direct bus from Changi International Airport to Johor Bahru which will drop the delegates off at the

Kotaraya II Terminal. NMIT will provide a free shuttle service at 3 p.m. on the 11th of October from Kotaraya

II Terminal to the respective hotels.

For more information about Changi – Kotaraya II service, please refer to the following website:
