Back-to-School Saints In addition to a feast day in honor of Our Blessed Lady on September 12th and the Exultation of the Holy Cross on September 14th, the month of Septem-ber is filled with celebration days of saints who were scholars, teachers, writ-ers, lawyers and doctors. One saint listed was of Bohemian royalty and has a song written about the act of charity he and his servant performed for a poor man. Can you guess who was this holy person?! (Hint: think of a Christmas-time carol, with lyrics “on the feast of Stephan”). See if you can find out more about our rich Catholic “family history” by doing some homework on those who helped show us The Way: Sept. 3 - St. Gregory the Great 9 - St. Peter Claver 12 - The Most Holy Name of Mary 13 - St. John Chrysostom 14 - The Exultation of the Holy Cross ` 16 - Saints Cornelius and Cyprian 17 - St. Robert Bellarmine 19 - St. Januarius 20 - Saints Andrew Kim, Tae-gon, Paul Chong Ha-sang, and Companions 21 - St. Matthew 23 - St. Pius of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) 26 - Saints Cosmos and Damian 27 - St. Vincent de Paul 28 - St. Wenceslaus, St. Lawrence Ruiz and Companions 30 - St. Jerome `

The Service Team wishes to thank everyone that contributed to make the First Annual Backpack Appeal a huge success. Whether you contributed a backpack filled with supplies, an empty backpack, supplies or even just kept the Service Team and our endeavors in your prayers, we wish to thank you for your abundant support. The appeal resulted in approximately 15 filled backpacks, 25 empty backpacks and about 3 large totes filled with school supplies. I believe that I can speak for the Service Team members in saying that we are always astounded by the generosity that isshown by our parish community. The Service Team received a letter of “Thanks” from Coral Uettwiller, at the Tompkins County Children’s Services Unit and we would like to share with you her comments:

“I want to thank you for your very gracious donation of the backpacks and school supplies. We are overjoyed to be able to pass them along to children in foster care who can use them. The school supplies will give them a boost to be successful this coming school year. When our caseworker delivered bags to one of our foster moms fostering 4 young children she was overcome with emotion, and appreciative for the support. Please extend our sincere gratitude to your entire parish for their extreme generosity to the community children in care.”

In closing, the Service Team thanks you for your support and generosity. As a reminder, we should all feel proud to be a part of such a a wonderful faith community.
