immaculate conception: byzantine mariology: palamas, theophanes of nicaea, mark of ephesus
DESCRIPTION
Gregory of Nazianzen began a Mariological tradition that culminated in the Palamite school. Gregory Palamas was perhaps the greatest Mariologist of the 2nd millennium in Byzantium. Palamas' Mariology accomplished through patristics what Duns Scotus only hoped to accomplished through theological argumentation with reference to Mary's title as Mother of God (Dei genitrix).TRANSCRIPT
ey to the present study is St. Gregory Nazianzen, Kwhose Marian doctrine inspired Benedict XVI at a 2007 public audience: “Mary, who gave human nature to Christ, is true Mother of God and, in view of her highest mission, was ‘prepurified,’ as if a distant prelude of the Immaculate Conception. As Pope Francis intensifies efforts to resolve differ-ences between Orthodox and Catholics, Fr. Kappes’ research clarifies Our Lady’s central role in these efforts.
“Eastern theology has laid great deal of emphasis to the katharsis or purification that Mary underwent at the moment of the Annunciation. It will be enough for us to recall here the moving commentary of St. Gregory Palamas on this point in one of his homilies: You are already holy, O Virgin, says the angel to Mary. But the Holy Spirit will come upon you anew and prepare you for the divine mystery by an increase of grace”.
