IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH
Mattoon, Illinois ST. COLUMCILLE CHURCH
Sullivan, Illinois JANUARY 24, 2021
THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Repent and believe in the Gospel.”
Mark 1:14-20
Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings
In next Sunday’s Gospel, (January 31) A man
possessed with an unclean spirit calls out to Jesus. As
we see in this example the spirits and demons seem to
know Jesus and are often fearful of him. In fact, they
seem to understand Jesus’ identity better than his
disciples. Jesus orders the spirit to be quiet and drives
the unclean spirit out of the man. Jesus’ ability to heal
those possessed by demons is an indication of his
power over evil. The crowds see in Jesus’ cure of the
possessed man further affirmation of his authority.
Jesus’ power to heal gives greater credence to his
teaching. Jesus impresses the crowds through his
words, which are manifested with power in his deeds.
Mark’s Gospel tells us that because of the authority
with which he healed, Jesus’ fame spread throughout
all of Galilee.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Deuteronomy 18:15-20: Moses tells the people
that God will raise up for them a new prophet.
1 Corinthians 7:32-35: Paul expresses his
concern that those who are married are more
likely to face the distractions of earthly life than
those who are celibate. Mark 1:21-28: Jesus heals a man with an
unclean spirit and his fame spreads throughout
Galilee.

A Pilgrim’s Progress….
Our Ordinary Time readings continue to focus on what it
means to be an authentic disciple of Jesus Christ. Today
the reluctant prophet to Nineveh, our old friend Jonah,
summons those who will hear to repent and thus their
city is saved for a season. St. Paul reminds the Church
in Corinth that (as always) time is short. The world as
we know it continues to pass away. The Kingdom (the
saving presence of Jesus Christ) is at hand and we can
stand around “mending our nets” or we can decide to
follow Christ.
As Helen Alvare, law professor at George Mason
University, and former USCCB spokesperson on respect
life issues recently pointed out, in this political season
we as Catholic Christians must by definition continue to
provide a consistent witness by our lives and work in the
public square to the unambiguous teachings of the
Church on the sacredness of Life, sexuality, marriage,
and parenting.
It is the dignity of the human person created in God’s
image that means there can be “no daylight” between
Catholic teaching on religious freedom, life issues, and
the option for the poor and dispossessed. People of good
will disagree on how to best achieve these goals, but to
actively oppose them puts one at odds with the Gospel of
Jesus Christ and his risen body the Church.
As our high school students light up the plaza of
Immaculate Conception Church this weekend with their
LUMINARIES FOR LIFE, they are providing a visible
call to prayer. Please join our LIVING ROSARY FOR
LIFE, at IC following our 5:00 PM mass this Sunday.
Next Saturday from 10 AM -1:00 PM all are invited to
tune in to the Immaculate Conception Facebook page
and share in the LIFE DEFENDERS CONFERENCE.
Geared especially for students, this is a great opportunity
to learn more about life issues.
Next Sunday from 11:00 – 3:00 at the former KC Hall in
T-town is the St. Hedwig Haus of Hospitality Toot n
Tell it drive thru “soup supper.” Funds raised go to
support the St. Hedwig Haus, Ven. Fr. Tolton House,
and Dorothy Day House in Charleston. These houses
provide a home for women and children in need. They
are one of the many front line faces of the pro-life
movement. They are making a difference every day for
real people in time and for eternity.
When you participate in any of these efforts you are
choosing to come and follow Christ!

Immaculate Conception Parish is grateful to be hosting
a Life Defenders Workshop on Saturday January 30th
from 10 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. While especially geared for
high school and college youth it will be open to all
ages. Because of space limitations we will be life
streaming the workshop to non youth group
participants. Please tune in on IC Facebook page.
“It’s Where We Are”
Next weekend in anticipation of the Feb. 3rd Feast of
St. Blaise we would typically offer the blessing of
throats. This ancient devotion expresses our Catholic
belief that God is the Lord of Life who wills our
health and wellbeing, our belief in the power of
prayer and the intercession of the saints, and that God
can use the material things of this world to bring us
closer to Himself. This year the blessing will not be
administered in the usual individual manner but will
be prayed over all assembled at once.
February 17th , Ash Wednesday, begins the holy
season of Lent. Per the direction of Pope Francis,
there will be a modification to the rite of imposition
of ashes. Our usual practice of receiving ashes on the
forehead has not been the practice for most of Church
history nor is it done in most of the world today.
This year ashes will be blessed and sprinkled with
holy water as usual. Then the priest will say to all
assembled at once: “Remember that you are dust and
to dust you shall return.” Then each penitent comes
up to silently receive ashes on the top of their head by
sprinkling.
