Pastor’s Notes:
On the feast of the Holy Family, one of the cluster of feasts around Christmas, Pope Frances
had this remark during one of his addresses: “The true joy that's experienced in the family
isn't something random or accidental. It is a joy that is the result of the deep harmony
between people, who savor the beauty of being together, of supporting each other on life's
journey," he said.
That joy also is always rooted in "God's presence, his welcoming love, mercy and patience toward everyone. If one doesn't
open the door of the family to God's presence and his love, the family loses harmony, individualism prevails and joy is
extinguished," he said.
My take-away from this is that it is something both important and intentional that we need to bring to our family life. That
something is a God-centered Charity; caring for others and keeping God at the center of our families.
Nowadays, we have so bought into the individualism of modern society that we now are seeing the negative effects of it going
“too far.” Individualism is great when dealing with personal achievement, and in difficulty to insist on our personal and
individual dignity as human persons. However, we can take it too far and obliterate the balance brought about by an under-
standing that as individuals we must contribute to the common good, else we will devolve into a sick narcissism. By this I
mean that we will have as our only, or even dominant point of reference the self. When we do this, we begin to ask selfish
questions like “What’s in it for me?” This is detrimental to family life and our society.
In one family I know, where every request for a contribution to the family in terms of chores is met with “How much money
will you pay me to do that chore?” What’s in it for ME?” This is not right. We need to teach our children (and adult children
also need to learn) that we are responsible to each other, to help one another, to contribute without counting the cost, to be
responsible to the good of family--and by extension to society and to the Kingdom of Heaven.
A second negative influence that modernity has brought to our families is secularism. The goal of secularism is to remove any
religious motivation or discourse from the body politic. When we opt for secularism we choose to silence the voices of the
Faithful. The antidote to a God-less society is keeping God at the center of the family. This can begin in very simple ways:
prayer together in the morning, at meals, at times of trouble, and in the evening before bed. Weekly Mass attendance on
Sunday is directed at combating godlessness. But it goes further than that. When we discipline our children, bringing God’s
moral laws (the 10 commandments, the two great commandments and the beatitudes, to name only three) into the teachable
moment is a way to be God-centered. To read from scripture or some spiritual reading and discuss it briefly, every dinner time
is another way to contextualize daily activity in the faith. Of course, this presumes that your family has dinner together every
day. Perhaps fewer stops to grab something at the local fast-food might help with that? Or if there is a game or some other
activity, planning for the WHOLE FAMILY to attend and to eat before or after would ensure the focus on family and of God.
It takes planning, and it takes sacrifice--but both of these are good for the soul.
When God is at the center, and charity is the goal in the family, we will keep our individualism in check by always seeking to
find how we can best contribute to the common good of the family, to society and to the Kingdom of God.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Don Malin

“SYMBOLON” The Catholic Faith Explained!
AUGUSTINE INSTITUTE TM
The early Church, Christians described their Creed,
“Statement of Faith” as a symbolon, “seal” or
“symbol of the faith.” This DVD series with study
guide is a 20 week course that can be a full study or
a pick and choose of the study you want to learn
more about. We are called through our baptism to be
on the mission of Jesus Christ and the Church’s new
evangelization. Many feel inadequate to talk freely
about the faith and so we don’t. This course is used by
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and Children
teams, i.e., RCIA and RCIC. “BE ON JESUS’
TEAM”
SCHEDULE is in the narthex: the study dates,
times, and specific study.
Contact: Deacon Leo Truscott, Immaculate Heart of
Mary, 970-242-6121 to register or get more infor-
mation. Study books are available or just sit through
the course.

Wills
I wonder if we need a new will or
trust as we have a new grandchild? I
wonder if our old will is up-to-date?
I wonder if a will and insurance will be enough to
take care of our children if something should happen
to me or my husband?
Maybe we’ll find out on Saturday, February 6th at
10am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.

Another successful year hosting men
from Homeward Bound has been completed
thanks to the help of many people who volunteered
their time and/or donated food for the two weeks we just
finished. The men are now the guests of Redlands United
Methodist Church for the next 2 weeks.
We want to especially thank those who volunteered to
stay overnight: Robert Bray, Tim Casey, Dave Duncan,
Bobbie Evans, Pete Fregetto, John Heideman, Miles
LaHue, Dave Lancaster, Bart Lockhart, Kyle Lockhart,
Dave Murphy, Bob Stepan, Peg Stepan, Pete Meyers,
Rick Peterson, Ann Peterson, Chris Pipken, Paul Redig,
Brian Sargent, Tom Sargent, Dennis Simpson, Mitch
Schierland, Cliff Ulman, Zulema Valencia, Art Weber,
Marv Walworth, Ken Wesolowski, John Withers, Gen
Yanowich, Angie Zdunich and Mike Sewell.
Another special thanks to those who prepared breakfasts
and dinners: Members of the Knights of Columbus,
members of the Ladies Auxiliary, Judy Campbell, Donna
Mae Donohue, Jeanie MacArthur, Mary Knob, Nancy
McCarroll, Barb Davis, Leslie McDonald, Shauna, Karen
Sjoberg, David Wells, Joe Doak, Julia Marston, Alex
Schmidt & family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith, Barb
Walders & family, Judy Spillane, Jane Lake, Anita
Martinez & friends from St. Ann’s, Andrea Siegel &
family, Melissa Scott, Jan & Steve Gammill, Dennis &
Joan Haberkorn, and Eileen McGinnis.
A great many people brought in food for the men and
simply dropped it off, so we don’t have their names, but
thank you for this essential service. Our guests so
appreciated your thoughtfulness and the bounty of food!
Kudos to the three coordinators of this program: Tom
Chapman – Mike Sewell – Patricia Amadeo. Not only did
they organize, recruit and schedule, they were on hand to
offer hospitality, answer questions, and sometimes to stay
overnight when a scheduled volunteer couldn’t come in.
A big thanks to Tim Gasperini without whom nothing
could have happened as he drove the van back and forth
each morning and evening to Homeward Bound.
This week, we will take up the Collection for the
Church in Latin America.
In Peru, the 14 villages of Chazuta, in
Moyobamba, are all located away from the
city center, with the most remote only
accessible by boat. Through our help members of the
Chazuta villages will feel the love and support of the
universal Church. Please support programs like these and
give generously.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
One ministry which has been put on hold for a while is the
Children’s Liturgy of the Word. With the Diocese of
Pueblo rules for safe environment, we are obliged to have
two adults accompany our children with their catechists if
they are going to the chapel during Mass. In order for this
ministry to continue, we will need at least two adults to be
with the children and teachers at the 10am Mass. Would
you like to make this your ministry and volunteer once a
month? Please contact Jack Stuckenschneider at the parish
office : 242-6121, and find out more to help establish this
ministry within our parish again.
Pictorial Directory - Many people have asked if they
have missed out in getting their free book.
The process has been very lengthy and you can watch
the bulletin for announcement of when they will
actually start printing. They will be delivered to the
church approximately 30 days after that with your
name on it and also the free 5x7 print. Call Bonnie for
any questions 243-4698.
We have a few openings on the back page of our
bulletins. Would you care to advertise each Sunday? A
small space is just $200/year and a double $360. Call
Bonnie at 243-4698 for any questions.
