We expect special guests to be in attendance and will have a reception following the 10:15 am service. So, in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a new school year, lets remember to make the most of every opportunity for worship, enrichment from Gods Word, and Christian fellowship. From Our Administrative Pastor…

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel, Paul tells us in Eph. 5:15-16 to be very careful about how we live, “making the best use of our time.” I like that verse, especially as we enter a new school year. Things will get busy for us as we and our loved ones attend classes, participate in sports events, and socialize with new and old friends. Managing our time wisely is a challenge in our day and age! With all this busyness, I think it’s extremely important that we make the best use of our time. That means being involved in things that make a difference. Being involved in things that have lasting—even eternal—consequences. We make the best use of our time when we worship, are involved in reading and studying the Bible, and serve God’s people in an intentional way. These things prepare us for eternity, and these are the things we’ll be doing in eternity. That being said, I’m happy to announce that we at Immanuel will be providing our members and the people of our local communities with many opportunities to worship and celebrate God’s goodness. We’ll make the best use of our time by participating in some circuit wide events, including:

A Circuit Forum on Sunday, September 24, starting at 3 pm, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt. All Lutheran church members in the counties St. Clair, Monroe, and Randolph are welcome to attend this forum. The event will begin with a worship service at 3 pm, followed by presentations by Rev. Jeff Hemmer on Christian masculinity and Rebekah Curtis on Christian femininity. A business meeting will be held at 5 pm for delegates to the 2018 Southern Illinois District Convention.

A circuit wide service celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation will be held here at Immanuel on Sunday, October 29, starting at 3 pm. The service will feature special music provided by area Lutheran choirs and musicians with Ann Frank directing (she’s been working hard putting this together for several months). A meal will be served in our multipurpose room following the service with entertainment provided by Rev. John Lukomski who will do his world famous impersonation of Martin Luther.

We’ll also make the best use of our time here at Immanuel by observing and celebrating:

The dedication of Immanuel’s new, expanded narthex during the 10:15 am service on Sunday, November 12. Rev. Herbert Mueller, a former pastor of Immanuel and First Vice President of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, will be our guest preacher. We expect special guests to be in attendance and will have a reception following the 10:15 am service.

So, in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a new school year, let’s remember to make the most of every opportunity for worship, enrichment from God’s Word, and Christian fellowship. What could be better? God bless you richly! Love in Christ,

Greetings in Christ!

I want to take a moment to answer the question many have been asking recently: “If you and Veronica can’t have children, how is Veronica now due in January?” I know I announced in church, but the questions have still been out there. I’ll briefly explain here, but I’m also happy to chat in person if you have questions about anything.

Veronica and I went through IVF...with a twist. IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization. In Vitro is Latin for “In the glass,” and fertilization is the process of combining sperm and egg in order to bring about a new life. In IVF, egg and sperm are joined together outside of the body to accomplish conception. This is one of many treatments that exist today for infertility. The infertility in Veronica and my case is because I am a carrier of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) which has repercussions preventing us from conceiving naturally. We had looked at other fertility treatments in the past but none would work for our circumstances. IVF had never been an option in our minds due to ethical issues. I’ll explain the issues and then how we got where we are today.

When sperm and egg are joined together for IVF the resulting embryos are either kept or discarded for subjective reasons of “looking good” or “looking bad”. Also, doctors make as many embryos as possible and whatever isn’t used is frozen for future pregnancies. So immediately there’s an issue with discarding life and treating life like an object. Life begins at conception and is valuable (Psalm 51:5 and 139:13). When sperm fertilizes the egg, that is a new life. A human embryo is still a human. There are currently around 600,000 frozen babies in our country because of the standard method of IVF. The IVF discussion is much bigger, those are just the bare basics on the topic.

Many of the families who can’t or choose not to carry the rest of those frozen children often put the children up for adoption, and since Veronica’s body is healthy we were looking into that form of adoption. We spoke with a doctor who works with embryo adoption and ended up learning that he would do IVF without the discarding process or freezing process. We talked to many pastors, professors, and other theologically sound individuals who could help us critically think through this situation to evaluate whether or not this was an option. We came to the conclusion that joining together Veronica and my genetic material with no discarding or freezing was an ethical option. There’s more to the discussion on the stewardship and emotional sides, but on the medical side, we concluded that we could ethically go through it.

Veronica is carrying our biological child. We have no frozen children and none were discarded along the way. We could afford to make one attempt at conception using IVF, so four embryos were produced, one died before transfer, and the other three embryos were placed into Veronica for a chance at meeting us. We could have had quads, but we will get to meet one child that we never thought we’d get to meet.

Fertility treatment of any kind should never be entered into

lightly. Prayer, education, pastoral counseling, and medical counseling are all very important when family related issues arise. Again, this was a SUPER basic overview of everything. Feel free to come chat if you have questions or concerns of any sort. Blessings on your day!

In Christ,

From Our Associate Pastor… “Ask the Pastor”

A “Note” from our Music Director

Music at Immanuel...

As the new Music Season of 2017-18 begins, I share with you the following song/poem which was written by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette: All the Music Sung and Played Here All the music sung and played here is a gift, O God, from you. For as long as we have prayed here, we've been blessed by music, too. By your Spirit, each musician finds new depths of faith to share. Music is a gift you've given and becomes our thankful prayer. All creation sings your glory; in the Psalms are pain and praise. Mary sang your saving story in her long, expectant days. Through the years, with great emotion, some have reached to you in song. May we sing with such devotion; music helps your church grow strong! You give hymns and songs for singing, toes for tapping your good news, Organ sounding, hand bells ringing, faithful hearers in the pews. With the trumpet and the cymbal, with guitar and violin, Faith is found here and rekindled; hearts are lifted, once again. Bless the talents we are bringing, for we offer you our best. If our gifts are not in singing, may our joyful noise be blest. If our world is ever silent, may we sign to you above. Touched by grace, may each one present offer back your song of love. Serving Him, and praying that Immanuel's Music Ministry be a blessing! To Him be the glory and honor!

Funke News: Tears of Joy and Sorrow If we were to describe this month in a word, that word would be “intense.” We have experienced great joy—welcoming our friends back from Diakonia, hearing their stories, receiving more computers for the school’s lab, supporting teen girls through the Huru program, learning that the laboratory in Mwanza is now fully funded thanks to St. John Lutheran Church-Cypress, TX, receiving our approval-to-adopt letter, finally meeting our daughter, and getting the next round of paperwork for her in record time! So much joy! At the same time, all three of us have also experienced bouts of illness and have spent most of the month on one medication or another. We have struggled with setbacks in obtaining Eric’s resident permit renewal and setbacks in the CHE program. Two of our students were bitten by snakes this week, but by God’s grace should recover. Finally, we experienced the joy of meeting our friend Omary’s precious baby boy Joshua only to grieve his passing three weeks later. Through it all, we cling to the promise that illness, pain, and separation are only temporary. Someday God will wipe away every tear of sadness from our eyes, and all that will remain are tears of joy. In the meantime, we are grateful for the moments of joy and pray that we can continue to bring Christ’s message of hope and love to a weary world. Our Daughter— Julia Karena Funke Thank you all who have been praying for our adoption journey this past month! On July 14th we finally received our letter of approval for a second adoption. Then on July 17th, we headed to Forever Angels in Mwanza to meet the two little girls that were eligible. Over the course of two prayerful days, it became increasingly clear that we were falling in love with Julia and that she is exactly right for our family. The name Julia is a variation on the multiple names she has had in her short life. Two reasons we love the name are that it is a Biblical name like Michael’s (Romans 16:15) and Julia is a type of butterfly. With some of the pain she has already experienced in the past few years, we love the butterfly’s imagery of new life. Her middle name Karena (pronounced ka-REH-na with a short “e”) was chosen in honor of the many amazing Karens in our lives, especially Linda’s sister and Eric’s mother. Julia is about 2.5 years old and only recently became eligible for adoption. She is kind, generous, clever, curious, and spunky. She has such a wonderful, courageous spirit, and every time we visit, we find new aspects of her that we love. We are so thrilled that she will soon join our family! We hope and pray that the rest of the paperwork will go smoothly and that we will be able to bring her home by early September. This is part of the newsletter written by Eric & Linda Funke on August 3, 2017. Would you like to be added to their email list? If so, email Eric & Linda at [email protected] and let them know.

BASIC Youth Group News!

Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Recycle your aluminum cans! There is a large trash can in the kitchen for those cans. If you have a large amount and put them in trash bags, you can put the bags over by the white shed at the corner of the parking lot. The paper recycle bins are located in the back of the education building. Load them up with your paper recycling products! The youth group thanks you for your support!

Greetings from the Women’s Christian Ministry (WCM)!

Hi, ladies! The fall is almost upon us which means cooler weather, changing leaves, WURSTMARKT & COUNTRY STORE, and BUNCO!

Sunday, October 1st, is the date of Immanuel’s annual Wurstmarkt and along with it comes the WCM’s Country Store! At the Country Store you will find homemade baked goods, various crafts, and other exciting items! Our baked goods will not be priced but will be sold by your free-will donations! If you would like to help by donating bakery and craft items to sell at our tables and/or by purchasing something that day, we thank you in ad-vance!

Mark your calendars for BUNCO! The date is Tuesday, October 24th, and all women (high school age and older) of Immanuel, and your friends, are invited! We’ll be inviting ladies from our area churches as well. We’ll have quality prizes for the winners and many wonderful attendance prizes just for being there. Snacks and drinks will also be provided. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and Bunco begins at 7:00 pm. Don’t know (or remember) how to play? No problem! We’ll give you some brief instructions. But, if it involves ladies and talking, it can’t be that difficult, right? Do you have little ones at home but would like to attend? Let me know, and we’ll be sure to have a few young ladies available to babysit while you enjoy the evening.

Our Ladies’ Bible study meets each Thursday and is studying “Forgiveness: Received from God ♥ Extended to Others” by Donna Pyle. All are welcome to join us on Thursdays at 7:00 pm in the overflow room.

As always, thank you for your continued donations to the Bi-County Backpack Program! This is an ongoing collection and has been a huge help to our community. There is a list of needed items in the bulletins, and there is a wooden collection box in the hallway by the overflow room for your donations. Thank you!

In Christ, Lisa Clamors

Wondering what the News and

Announcements Survey results

showed?

Responses: 110

How do you find out what’s happening at church? Announcements—96.4%

Pastor says it—81.8% Newsletter—70.9%

Weekly Update (emailed)—55.5% Facebook—39.1%

Other members—32.7% Slides before service—29.1%

Church website—15.5% ——————————————————————–————

63.6% take both the bulletin & announcements 13.6% take just the announcements

20% take neither 74.7% prefer the announcements to be a separate insert

——————————————————————–———— 62.7% always read the newsletter

31.8% sometimes read the newsletter 81.8% say it’s fine just the way it is

——————————————————————–———— The majority (68.1%) of people would like to find out about

upcoming events between 2 weeks and 1 month prior. 17.8% would like to know in August or September for the

entire year. ——————————————————————–———— The top three ways of communication that the majority can’t live

without are the announcements in the bulletin, the monthly newsletter, and the Pastor’s pre-service announcements.

——————————————————————————-- Some of the various comments received:

Announcements papers at church should be handed out separately from the bulletin to save paper and this way the bulletins can be reused during all three services.

All methods are appreciated. The more the better. The old saying is a person has to hear something 7 times to register and remember. Communicate, communicate, communicate.

When things are in the announcements over & over every week, I tend to skip them and not read any of that section.

We need the traditional way “paper announcements” as well as the new “electronic” way to reach all ages of the church community.

Congratulations to Jenna Hoeffken for receiving Perfect Attendance during the summer months! Honorable mention certificates (for only missing 1-3 classes) were given to Kelsey Crook, Nicholas Hoeffken, Addie Janssen, Ben Janssen, and TJ Joellenbeck. Congratulations to all of you! Remember, during each quarter, perfect attendance and honorable mention certificates are given to those children in Pre-school - 8th grades who miss 0-3 classes.
