IMMANUEL’S INSIGHTS APRIL 2013 I begin this month’s newsletter cover with where I ended last month, and where we are going in our preaching series on I Thessalonians this month: 1 Thessalonians 4:1314 (NIV) 13 “Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” And verse 18: “Therefore encourage each other with these words.” And it is not just those grieving the death of a loved one we are to encourage. How do we encourage those who lost a job? How do we encourage someone whose son or daughter has turned from the fam- ily? Someone who has just been diagnosed with cancer? What does it take to become an encourager of others? Kenneth Haugk, the originator of our Stephen Ministry and our Christian Caregiver class, writes in his book Don’t Sing Songs To A Have Heart : “So, how are you?” “Fine.” I have a friend in Alcoholics Anonymous who tells me that in that organization, fine as a response to “How are you?” is taken to mean, “Fouled up, Insecure, Neurotic, and Empty.” Because of this, he now responds to people who tell him they are “fine” with, “Oh, that bad, eh?” It’s a good start. Recognizing that when we ask people we think might be hurting in the hallway at church, or by the water cooler at work, or over the fence in our neighborhood we might not really be hearing the whole answer. Especially if the answer is “fine!” And we might not be giving them the time to really say where their hurt really lies. It is true that healing takes time. And part of the reason for that is there is a connection between talking out the pain, time and time again, telling the story, time and time again, and the time that healing takes. Which also implies that listening takes time, sometimes time after time. Most of us do not process a loss simply by telling the story once. And most of us do not really hear another person’s pain simply by hear- ing their story once. Sharing, and listening, over and over, are part of the process of healing that takes time. But are we willing to give that much time to another person? Which is why, when asked how they are doing, most hurting people simply answer “fine”. Because they think that is what the other person wants to hear. And yes, if that really is all that you want to hear, there is always the chance to simply nod and walk away. But often times there is also an opportunity - not immediately, maybe later for real Christian caregiving. Time to get beyond “fine.” Time to simply listen. Time for understand. Time for coffee. Time for prayer. But of course that takes time. And did you catch that in I Thessalonians? Time for the right words God’s words. “Therefore encourage each other with these words.” Not my words, God’s words. Words of comfort. Words of peace. Words of life. Because we truly do “…believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” And that is the message, God’s message of encouragement we bring to hurting people. IMMANUEL’S INSIGHTS APRIL 2013

I begin this month’s newsletter cover with where I ended last month, and where we are going in our preaching series on I Thessalonians this month:

1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 (NIV) 13 “Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” And verse 18: “Therefore encourage each other with these words.”

And it is not just those grieving the death of a loved one we are to encourage. How do we encourage those who lost a job? How do we encourage someone whose son or daughter has turned from the fam-ily? Someone who has just been diagnosed with cancer? What does it take to become an encourager of others?

Kenneth Haugk, the originator of our Stephen Ministry and our Christian Caregiver class, writes in his book Don’t Sing Songs To A Have Heart: “So, how are you?” “Fine.”

I have a friend in Alcoholics Anonymous who tells me that in that organization, fine as a response to “How are you?” is taken to mean, “Fouled up, Insecure, Neurotic, and Empty.” Because of this, he now responds to people who tell him they are “fine” with, “Oh, that bad, eh?”

It’s a good start. Recognizing that when we ask people we think might be hurting in the hallway at church, or by the water cooler at work, or over the fence in our neighborhood – we might not really be hearing the whole answer.

And most of us do not really hear another person’s pain simply by hear-ing their story once.

But often times there is also an opportunity - not immediately, maybe later – for real Christian caregiving. Time to get beyond “fine.” Time to simply listen. Time for understand. Time for coffee. Time for prayer. But of course that takes – time.

And did you catch that in I Thessalonians? Time for the right words – God’s words.

In Christ’s Loving Service, Pastor Steve

STEWARDSHIP SNIPPETS

Serving one another within our church. Such a statement is easy to quote. Not so easy to always put in to realize or put in to action. Many times others are putting it in to action, but they don’t even realize it.

It is easier for us personally to see what we do together as a large group or small organized groups for those outside our walls in the community. But, it is much more difficult at times to see the various levels of needs and service to each other within our own family of believers.

Do you find yourself wondering where your piece of this puzzle fits in, or even, what IS your piece of the puz-zle?

One may gauge a service on how large-scale or organized it is. One tends to wonder if what they do really matters or is “really enough?” We are human so we underestimate God’s gifts to each of us that can be used within His Church and towards each other within the congregation. It is easy to get caught up in “who does that?” or “who do we call/what committee is in charge of…..”

It doesn’t hurt to overlap – sometimes God uses several people in various ways to complete a task and fill a need. This is just a basic and simple example. Let’s say you feel lead to go rake someone’s yard but someone else did it just last week – so what? Guaranteed – here in Harlan there are enough trees with falling leaves, that there will be leaves in that same person’s yard the next week also!

EVERYONE of every gender and every age within our congregation has been given some special talent by God to use both outside our church and within. Much of our service in Christ (call it mission, call it a ministry, “helping”, caring) is by keeping each fellow believers whole and centered on Christ by meeting spiritual, emo-tional and physical needs. In other words, when another member of the body has grown weak in any of these areas, we hold out our hand to help them up, brush off their knees and give them strength in whatever way we have a gift to do this.

You are not expected to “make up a need”. Just keep your eyes and ears open, listen, and keep an open heart. If you see a church member in need, and God has given you the talent to perform the need – then fill it. A min-istry is just that – ministering to one another. Yes, you can do this through by participating in an organized committee (ministry). Yes, there may be several of you that have the same interest and idea that can work to-gether. But more importantly, God does call you as an individual and sometimes it is the quiet and subtle that makes all the difference to another person.

TANZANIA UPDATE

Soup Supper and Auction Recap: What a night! What a night! There are not thanks enough for everyone that helped make this a success. This year there were people that have come every year and this year we had a lot of newcomers. If you have not attended in the past or if you were unable to attend this year, you have GOT to come next year. There were those that furiously competed in the soup competition by mixing up their favorite recipe in large quantities and worked like crazy serving everyone along with decorating their tables. There were those that donated some fantastic items, bid and purchased items and spent time baking dessert goodies to be shared with everyone. An auction led by our one and only Craig Olson kept everyone on their toes. We were entertained throughout the evening from none other than Charlie Gearhart and his accordion and “Shirley Tem-ple” tap-danced the night away. The fishing game provided by the Lytle’s was enjoyed by every one of all ages. We even had Chilly Willy and Yeti roaming the fellowship hall and serving up Snowball Soup. Our judges this year (Carol McHugh, Kay Johannsen, Mary Taggs, and Joey Hansen as church competition tie breaker) learned a lesson in trust as they were lead in by blindfold to judge the church competition and then gave of themselves to deliberate over all the great soups that were served up. A big thank you to the entire gang from St Paul’s in Irwin for all their support and competing in the Church Challenge. Their battle cry was sung out as they left that evening “We will get you next year!!!” (Bring it on! We can hardly wait!). After all was said and done, the total amount raised for Kidugala projects was over $7700.

Philipo Mloge News: Philipo has been home for Easter Holiday with his family and then he will return back to the university. Recently he sent some sad news that one of his classmates passed away. Also, he himself had not been feeling well. He was diagnosed as having malaria and is currently on medication. Continue to pray for his health that he recovers well from the malaria, gains his strength and continues with his studies.

Transportation in Kidugala: In the Kidugala District (Kidugala and 12 preaching points) they have to depend on walking, bike or small bus. There is a diocese vehicle that is shared with the diocese in Njombe along with several other districts. When things need to be transported, usually there are drivers that are hired to bring the items. So workers, vehicle and fuel have to be paid to load/unload and get things picked up/delivered. It was Kidugala District’s dream to have a vehicle of their own. The entire district held a fund-raiser and were able to raise enough funds to pay for taxes, entry fees, and border inspections. Kidugala pastors have been in contact with a reliable from the U.K./Dar to find a solid vehicle that will meet a host of needs for the district. After much research and discussion, we at Immanuel assisted them in the selection and purchase of a 4-door Ford Ranger. This will serve their needs for all church transportation. Pastor Wallace is a certified driver along with an elder in the church, Issac Nyato. This vehicle will be used for all church transportation needs of Pastor Wal-lace, Pastor Nuru, getting Evangelists and others to training as needed, transport of bibles when ordered. This will be especially helpful when needing any agriculture or health supplies from great distances such as Iringa and Dar es Salaam. Some issues in the past is, they have to requisition a vehicle to use, one that is shared with several districts and belongs to the diocese. Also, another issue in regards to agriculture is waiting for gov-ernment delivery of fertilizers and seed. After being on a waiting list for the supplies, paying for the loading/unloading of the supplies, paying a driver, fuel and just the cost of transportation – it has made the cost in-crease PLUS the supplies such as seed and fertilizer are arriving too late to do any good. This vehicle will be owned, operated and maintained by the church of the Kidguala District and will be used for all purposes of the church and HEAD committees (Health, Education, Agriculture, Development/Evangelizing). They expect the deliver of the vehicle in approximately a month. When it has arrived they will send photos as soon as possible.

Orphan Education: This program is being maintained financially by all of you at Immanuel and being man-aged by the Education Committees of all 12 preaching points in the Kidugala District. More and more orphan students are benefiting from this program and receiving their education at the primary levels. There is talk of in the future that it can also assist those orphans continuing their education past the primary levels and into the secondary levels. None of these children take education for granted and continue to send their thanks to every-one for their assistance.

TANZANIA UPDATE, CONTINUED

Summer Trip to Kidugala: Consider going to Kidugala, Tanzania this Summer. Build new friendships and walk through the open door to unknown possibilities. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact any Tanzania Team member. If you would like to inquire about financial assistance to take the trip, contact either Peg/Larry Haas or Deb/Mark Schechinger. The trip will be taken the beginning of July and will return home prior to local school or college classes starting. Any member of Immanuel is encouraged to take the trip. Any high school student entering their Junior/Senior year or any college students are highly encouraged to take the trip. Besides the joy of finding out what God has in store for you, it could be interesting just to see how many people can get squished into a 4-door Ford Ranger and traipse across Tanzania! How’s that for inspiration and adventure!

April Recipe of the Month: Ah, now that the 2013 Soup Supper Auction has been completed, we have a new crop of recipes for this coming year. This month we bring you the winner of the “Judge’s Choice”. For this judg-ing: the judges are given trays, they receive a cup of soup from each table and the cup is marked with the table number only. They then go in private and deliberate with score sheets. They score each soup on a scale of 1-10 in each of the following categories: Appearance, Aroma, Originality, Texture, and Flavor for a highest total point of 50. “The Judge’s Choice” receives their name and name of their soup on a plaque that hangs in the Fellowship Hall, along with a gift basket. This year’s winner was Table #12 – Alex’s Famous Taco Soup made by Alex Hansen.

Alex’s Famous Taco Soup – From Alex Hansen

2 cans pinto or ranch style beans 2 cans Rotel with green chilies

When you serve the soup – top with shredded cheese, sour cream and Fritos (don’t forget the Fritos!) (For the soup supper, she tripled this rec-ipe)

Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption Katie Davis, at age 19, starts a ministry that feeds and teaches hundreds of children in Uganda every day. She has adopted 13 girls.

Last Ounce of Courage: A story of family faith and freedom (DVD) A father honors the sacrifices his son made and fights for freedom. This is a reminder of patriotism and standing for what is RIGHT.

Enjoy the books and VHS tapes that you found at the “Library Spring Cleaning” table. Thank you for the donations.

There are many new items for you and your families to enjoy. Check them out on the clipboard. Thank you.
