Prepared for the World

32014-2015 Annual Report

Dennis Di Lorenzo Harvey J. Stedman Dean NYU School of Professional Studies

Dear friends and members of the NYU School of Professional Studies community, As an educational institution that is dedicated to life-long learning and self-improvement, it is only fitting that, each year, we take the time to pause and evaluate our own progress. This exercise provides us with the opportunity to assess our current standing, while planning for the future. Publishing the NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Annual Report is a critical function of this process.

As you read through these pages, you will note that NYUSPS is uniquely positioned by its deep and irrefutable connections to industry—here in the heart of New York City and around the world. It is these relationships that allow us to provide a truly exceptional educational experience for our students at the undergraduate and graduate level, and in the career advancement/professional development space.

Our student body is more diverse than ever before, reflecting the demand for the School’s distinct brand of professionally focused education in the US and abroad. The skills that we teach and the knowledge that we impart are immediately and universally applicable. Our faculty members are conducting important research and launching new initiatives that are building critical bridges between industry and education—here and across the continents. They are leaders and innovators in their fields, who share their knowledge and prepare the next generation of professionals.

The 2014-2015 academic year was marked by tremendous change and advancement. From the launch of the NYUSPS American Language Institute at NYU Shanghai, which serves a growing international market that is eager for English language skills, American cultural immersion, and professional development, to the introduction of Professional Pathways, which has redefined our NYC-based, non-degree offerings by addressing the educational needs of established professionals through Career Advancement Courses, and by providing new job-training opportunities for the unemployed and the underemployed through Diploma Programs.

I hope you find this report informative, and that it encourages you to remain active and involved in the NYUSPS community. We are on the move and ready to embark on another exciting academic year.

Sincerely,

4 2014-2015 Annual Report

NEWLY LAUNCHED PROFESSIONAL PATHWAYS MEETS THE CHANGING DEMANDS OF INDUSTRY HERE AND AROUND THE GLOBE

During Fall 2015, the NYU School of Professional Studies launched NYUSPS Professional Pathways. This new initiative builds upon the tradition of excellence the School’s noncredit programs have provided to generations of students by offering new educational options that meet the changing demands of industry here—in New York City—and around the world.

Professional Pathways will provide students with the ability to choose the type of education that best suits their needs, offering a prescriptive approach to learning—one that is based upon specific areas of professional interest, depth of knowledge and level of education, and career goals and objectives.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT COURSES THAT MEET THE NEEDS OF ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS

Career advancement courses offer a broad array of highly focused study options that provide established working professionals with the opportunity to hone their skills, build critical knowledge in their area of expertise, and expand their professional network.

To recognize acquisition of knowledge through these courses, NYUSPS has introduced a Professional Development Badging System, which allows students to collect a digital badge for each course they successfully complete. Badges can be displayed through the student’s social media presence and on digital résumés, providing current and prospective employers with a snapshot of industry expertise.

Two options—Career Advancement Courses and Diploma Programs—provide distinct learning experiences that immerse students in relevant course content and build skills for now and for the future.

AMERICAN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE AT NYU SHANGHAI PROVIDES ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING AND CULTURAL IMMERSION

China has become a driving force on the world’s financial and cultural stage. As this historic transition has occurred, there has been a shift to a market economy as well as rapidly evolving economic and social change. With this transformation, new opportunities have become available to China’s college and graduate-level students as well as to those in international business who play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s financial future. It is members of these two groups who will benefit most by enrolling in new English language and American cultural immersion programs that are being offered, for the first time this fall, through the NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) American Language Institute (ALI) at NYU Shanghai in Pudong.

Two programs of study will be offered through the America Language Institute at NYU Shanghai—the Academic English Preparation Program (AEP) and the Professional English Program (PEP). AEP prepares students to apply for, gain admission to, and succeed in US colleges and universities. This program emphasizes the critical thinking, persuasive writing, public presentation, and class participation skills essential for success in a US university setting. Courses will be offered weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

EXPANDING OUR REACHto enhance educational offerings and build

GLOBAL connections

INITIATIVE FOR THE STUDY OFEMERGING THREATS (ISET) EXPLORES NEW AND EMERGING SECURITY CHALLENGES

In an age of cyberterrorism and human trafficking, Russia’s “little green men” in Crimea, and the black-flag legions of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, it is clear that the security challenges facing the world are increasingly complex and varied. The NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Center for Global Affairs (CGA), has long been dedicated to understanding and to predicting non-traditional and new security threats—here in NYC and around he world—as well as to exploring responses to these challenges. It recently launched the Initiative for the Study of Emerging Threats (ISET), which reflects and extends this mission.

ISET is led by Dr. Mark Galeotti, director of the transnational security concentration within CGA’s M.S. in Global Affairs (MSGA). He is a globally recognized expert in transnational crime, non-conventional conflict, and Russian security affairs. The Initiative brings together research by faculty members, students, and affiliates of the program who consider what challenges may be lurking just over the horizon, and how we can best prepare for them. ISET will explore key issues that include:

Transnational Crime • CybercrimeInformation Warfare • CorruptionInsurgency • Cyberwar • Terrorism Subversion • Cyberterrorism

LOCAL and GLOBAL scale

ALI ENGLISH LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT ENSURES SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM AND BEYOND

The opportunity to earn a degree in a city as large and as diverse as NYC is particularly appealing for those international students who seek a professionally focused education such as the type offered by NYUSPS. To ensure the success of international students, the School recently established the English Language Assessment program through its American Language Institute. Regardless of their TOEFL scores, students are evaluated to gauge their level of communication skills, and to gain the command of English they need to excel in the rigorous educational environment that NYUSPS offers.

NEW CGA CONCENTRATION IN GLOBAL GENDER STUDIES

The Center for Global Affairs is offering a new concentration in Global Gender Studies within the MS in Global Affairs. The concentration is one of only a few masters-level programs available to equip students with the knowledge and skills to analyze the fundamental relationship between gender and international politics. Students from NYC—home to the U.N.—as well as those from around the world, can benefit from the solid foundation this program provides in promoting social justice, development, human rights, and corporate social responsibility in international development, peace and governance organizations, national foreign affairs, aid, social policy and defense departments, private sector organizations, the not-for-profit sector, and academia.

EXPANSION OF THE NYUSPS HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY

After the highly successful launch of the NYUSPS High School Academy summer programs, weekend workshops for high schools students were introduced in Fall 2014 to provide them with programs that allow them to explore their professional options and to enhance their college portfolio during the school year. These workshops, which were attended by students from the Tri-State area and beyond, included courses in college writing, global affairs, architecture, and sports management, among others, and are taught by top industry experts. They serve as an impressive addition on college applications.

INTRODUCTION OF NYUSPS HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY ASPIRE

NYUSPS High School Academy Aspire is a scholarship program for rising high school juniors from underrepresented communities in the New York metro area who will be first-generation college students. This one-week college prep and immersion program, was introduced in Summer 2015. Each student admitted received a full scholarship that covered tuition, housing, and meals. The college experience, expectations, options, financial aid, application timeline and plan; as well as resources for standardized testing and college essay writing, were all part of the discussion in this comprehensive program.

GRADUATE CONVOCATION SPEAKER UTILIZES HER EDUCATION TO HELP OTHERS

Born in Karachi, Pakistan, to Kurdish refugees fleeing the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq, Dalia Amin spent the first decade of her life in resettlement camps. Her family eventually moved to Seattle, Washington, but at the age of 15, her parents travelled with her to Iraq so that she could meet her grandparents for the first time. The visit was both eye opening and emotional for the impressionable teenager. The conflict, displacement, and extreme poverty she witnessed inspired her to become involved in international peacebuilding initiatives as an adult. She enrolled in the NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs (CGA) to pursue the M.S. in Global Affairs with a concentration in International Development and Humanitarian Assistance, and a focus on peacebuilding and gender studies.

During her time at CGA, she participated in hands-on learning experiences, including interning at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and working with Professor Thomas Hill at the University of Duhok, Iraq, within the program in peace and conflict studies. After graduation, she continued her work in Iraq, focusing on the effects of displacement on women and girls and on improving access to education and healthcare.

CENTER FOR GLOBAL AFFAIRS CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR RECOGNIZED FOR RESEARCH ON SOCIAL BASES OF SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZED EXTRA-STATE VIOLENCE

Mary Beth Altier, a visiting clinical assistant professor of Global Affairs in the NYUSPS Center for Global Affairs, was selected to receive the 2015 Best Paper Award from the American Political Sci-ence Association’s Organized Section on European Politics and Society for her paper, “Voting for Violence: Explaining Support for Paramilitary Parties at the Polls.” The award was presented at the annual meeting in September. Altier’s paper examines the social bases of support for organized extra-state violence within democracies. In particular, she investigates why individuals choose to support political parties with ties to terrorist organizations rather than non-violent alternatives with similar policy goals. Drawing on statistical analyses of new sub-national data for 78 electoral districts during Northern Ireland’s Troubles over 35 years, as well as fieldwork and comparative case stud-ies of Lebanon, Spain, and the Palestinian territories, she argues that support for paramilitary parties stems primarily from the presence or deepening of a security crisis as a result of state and sectar-ian violence against civilians and not economic grievances, the intensity of inter-communal electoral competition, or the relative local balance of power between paramilitaries and the state.

CENTER FOR APPLIED LIBERAL STUDIES ADJUNCT PROFESSOR PUBLISHES NEW PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK ON CITIES AFTER DARK

Adjunct Professor Lynn Saville, who teaches in the NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Applied Liberal Studies, recently published a new book titled Dark City, which focuses on US cityscapes (including NYC) after dark. Sav-ille concentrates on spaces that are empty and moody, including back alleys and empty lots. Her images are eerie, but they also speak to the changing urban landscape and the driving fac-tors behind it.

WHITEPAPER AND EVENT EXPLORE NYC’s CONTINUED RESILIENCE DESPITE CRISISAND ADVERSITY

Over the past 15 years, New York City has en-dured the 9/11 attacks, two recessions, a Wall Street crisis, and a catastrophic superstorm. Yet the City always has bounced back stronger than ever. The reasons behind this were examined dur-ing “New York City: The Great Reset,” an event hosted by the NYU School of Professional Studies on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at the NYU Kimmel Center for University Life. Prominent city leaders, urbanists, entrepreneurs, and investors discussed what’s in store for the City as it continues to grow and evolve, as well as the ways in which New York-ers can build a more creative and inclusive city.

The event also served to highlight findings of a whitepaper by the same name, which focused on the City’s changing economic structure, key indus-trial and occupational clusters, demographic trends, and real estate development patterns. The paper was the collaborative effort of NYUSPS faculty members and administrators Richard Florida, Hugh F. Kelly, Steven Pedigo, and Rosemary Scanlon.

DR. MONA RIKLIS ACKERMAN LECTURE FUND ESTABLISHED TO CREATE A LECTURE SERIES ON THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PHILANTHROPY

Mr. Ari J. Ackerman and Dr. Gila Ackerman Steinbock, the son and daughter of the late Dr. Mona Riklis Ackerman, have made a generous gift in their mother’s memory to the NYU School of Professional Studies. Dr. Ackerman, who was a prominent New York City clinical psychologist, was also known for the popular weekly advice column, “Dr. Mona Knows,” which she wrote for The Huffington Post. She was a graduate of New York University, as well as a former trustee. In addition, she taught “Psychology of Philanthropy,” as an adjunct professor in the NYU School of Professional Studies George H. Heyman, Jr. Center for Philan-thropy and Fundraising.

Dr. Ackerman, herself, was deeply philanthropic, providing support to a broad range of cultural and scientific organizations in New York City and around the world. In recognition of her generous spirit of giving, her children decided to make a gift that established the Dr. Mona Riklis Ackerman Lecture Fund, which will serve to support the annual “Dr. Mona Riklis Ackerman Lecture Series on the Psychology of Philanthropy.” “My sister and I felt that there was no better way to honor her legacy as a legendary psychologist and a passionate philanthropist,” stated Mr. Ackerman. Those interested in contributing can contact the NYUSPS Development Office at [email protected] or at 212-998-6950. The first annual lecture will take place on November 9, 2015, and will be moderated by Dr. Lukas Haynes, executive director of The Rockefeller Foundation, who will guide the conversation on the psychology of philanthropy with leaders in this area who represent a diverse range of approaches to giving.

ADJUNCT FACULTY MEMBER MAKES $1 MILLION BEQUEST IN SUPPORT OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS AND CORPORATE COMMUNICATION GRADUATE PROGRAMMr. Terry Fassburg, an adjunct instructor in the NYU School of Professional Studies, has made a $1 million bequest in his will to support the MS in Public Relations and Corporate Communication within the Division of Programs in Business (DPB) in which he teaches. Recently retired, Mr. Fassburg has enjoyed a highly successful career in public relations and marketing communications for more than 30 years. He has held numerous senior-level positions including: vice president, Brand and Corporate Communications, Philips Electronics; managing director, Strategic Marketing Practice, Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide; vice president, Corporate Communications & Public Relations, The Seagram Company, Ltd; and vice president, Public Affairs, PepsiCo; among others.

Over the past five years, Mr. Fassburg has worked as an adjunct professor, sharing his comprehensive knowledge of public relations and marketing with NYUSPS students. He has mentored and encour-aged them in their careers, and has utilized his vast industry connections to provide his students with exposure to top experts.

“I truly enjoy teaching in the MS in Public Relations and Corporate Communication,” said Mr. Fassburg. “There is nothing more rewarding than sharing your expertise with others and watching them grow to become successful professionals. My bequest serves to further the excellent work Dean Di Lorenzo is doing to reposition the School and to support the high caliber of teaching the Public Relations and Corporate Communication Department is doing to educate the next generation of public rela-tions professionals. It gives me immense pleasure to know that this financial commitment will help to strengthen a program of study that I deeply respect.”

18 2014-2015 Annual Report

Over the past 10 years, as colleges and universities across the US have seen a significant decrease in grad-uate enrollment, NYUSPS has experienced an uptick of 73% in graduate enrollment. This indicates a strong interest in students gaining a graduate education in the growing industry sectors in which the School leads. Its professionally focused, traditional undergraduate degree programs offered by the Tisch Center for Hos-pitality and Tourism; the Tisch Institute for Sports Man-agement, Media, and Business; and the Schack Institute of Real Estate, also have seen an increase in enrollment of 82%. Only its undergraduate degree completion pro-grams have experienced a decline. These programs are currently under review to better align them to meet the needs of new and emerging nontraditional undergradu-ate student market segments.

As the market for noncredit education has changed and contracted nationwide, there has been an in-creased call by employers to offer less exposure-based programming and instead to provide educational experiences that require a more prescriptive form of learning—one that can be validated by educators and industry alike. Though the School’s noncredit enroll-ments have remained relatively flat over the past two years, they are well below their peak in 2007, the di-rect result of this pronounced change in the very core of noncredit education. To ensure that the School heeds the call of industry, and focuses on the growing need for programs that provide job training in fields that are hiring, it has begun the process of retiring its noncredit certificate programs and is in the launch phase of replacing them with Diploma Programs for individuals with varying levels of education. This will, in turn, allow it to capture and cultivate a whole new market that requires learning with concrete outcomes and top-notch career development services. (See pages 4 and 5)

Over the past four years, created applications for graduate programs have increased by 71%. As creation of domestic applications has remained fairly steady, a marked uptick of 319% has occurred in applications created by international students during this period of time. This growth undeniably demonstrates the increased interest from international students in the School’s portfolio of industry focused majors that di-rectly mirror areas of study, which are relevant in their own countries. The prospect of living, learning, and networking in NYC—the financial and cultural capital of the world—also serves as an intriguing incentive to enroll.

192014-2015 Annual Report

To meet the needs of high school students, who are interested in supplementing their pre-college learning with a professionally focused educational experience in the heart of NYC, the School launched the NYUSPS High School Academy in Summer 2013. Each summer, students from the New York metro area, across the country, and around the globe come to NYUSPS to live and learn together, gaining invaluable professional experience. The popular summer program has seen an increase of 120% since its inception. So successful was the launch of the summer program, that the School created High School Academy Weekend Workshops to extend the professional experience to students in fall and spring semesters as well. From the inaugural Fall 2014 semester to this past spring semester, enroll-ment has increased by 47%.

Of the six continents reflected in this chart, Asia has produced the greatest number of created applications with a 795% increase over the last five years. Although China has produced the majority of this activity, appli-cations are on the rise from India, and Indonesia, which are seen as new and emerging recruitment markets. Central America and Canada also have contributed to a marked increase in applications from North America.* The School also is beginning to receive greater num-bers of applications from Africa.

* North American numbers exclude the US, and repre-sent totals for Canada and Central America.

NYUSPS employs 110 full-time faculty members and over 2,000 adjunct practitioners, who provide fresh approaches to delivering course content that is imme-diately applicable in the workplace. Though they differ greatly in professional background, they collaborate to create a progressive and inclusive learning environ-ment that mirrors the diversity and the forward think-ing of NYC. Students benefit from the tremendous insight that faculty members bring to the classroom, as well as the stimulating dialogue that they encour-age based upon their own varied views, interests, and experiences.
