Back in immigration times an apartment building would look exactly like the picture above.
In some places it is still like “ the Old Rear tenement” so not much has changed.

The picture above is what a typical immigrants house would look like.
But most immigrants did not have a house. They manly had an apartment or they rented out a house.

In many homes they did not have money for a doctor when the got sick, so they had to get nursed back to health at home.
The same thing has happened in the picture you just saw.
