    Author’s Note on Great Literature

oetry has always been a part of human life. It is an art that lies in the soul and spirit of man since the beginning of time. A poet writes always of his personal life and experience. He writes

because he has an indispensable desire in his heart to express his ideas to objectify his poetic philosophy about life.

The English poet Shelly said that: ‗‗A poem is the very image of life expressed in its eternal truth…‘‘. The profound truth in this line written by Shelly can be seen in the poetry of all the classical poets, from Homer to Shakespeare. The writing of great poetry has been the primary vehicle for expressing one‘s thoughts, observations, historical events, and various philosophies from a different perspective about life. A great poem, unlike a novel or a short story, can be digested and absorbed in our souls and can become a part of us forever. The poetry of Homer, Virgil, Dante, Tagore, and Shakespeare has become a part of the literary world until today. The divinity of their poetry has become sermons and prayers over the ages.

Poets speak a language all their own. Poets think in images—words naming a sensory thing or action. Great poetry requires a reader to experience a series of sensory experiences. Having experienced the image, we need to interpret it. The vital message and metaphor are what the poet wants you to know. Poetry gives pleasure first, then truth, hidden in complex imagery and philosophy. Its language is charged, intensified and sophisticated. The imagery in poetic writing is what every poet should strive for to achieve in his literary craft. Imagery is not just the sensory object the poem will convey to the readers. It is not only the beautiful and musical patterning of words; it is truth and meaning within the words of the poet that gives us great poetry.

The illustrious American poet and critic T.S. Eliot wrote: ‗‗The dead poets are revealing themselves in the poets that are alive…‘‘ His knowledge in the line I have quoted here is what I have experienced as a poet. I am inspired and motivated to write when I read the work of a great poet. Poetry, I believe, is a very deep spiritual revelation compounded with creative imagination from the unseen world into the known material world.

Some philosophers and theologians believe that poetry writing is ‗intuitive writing‘ that cannot be taught from mere book learning. I fully agree with them because one can be taught the literary genres and techniques about writing from an English textbook, but one cannot be taught how to write. Great poetry should be revealed to the poet by spiritual revelation for him. It is my firm conviction that poetry, as well as music and art, are a God-given gift given to the artist unknown to him on many occasions that cannot be taught at Universities. Some of our greatest Guyanese authors and poets such as Martin Carter, Wilson Harris, Edgar Mittelholzer, Philip Moore and Petamber Persaud never acquired university degrees but their writings excelled those with Ph.D. degrees. Samuel Johnson was too poor to acquire a University degree, yet he wrote the greatest dictionary and tons of books and papers. What many academics failed to understand is very simple: degrees don‘t write; writers do the writing.

Intuition which we sometimes call ‗inspiration‘ will push us to write lines we ourselves are unable to write by our natural intellectual apprehension. Until today, many literary scholars believe that Shakespeare never wrote what he had written because he was not educated at a University. Shakespeare was naturally gifted and inspired by God to write what he had written. The American poet and critic, T.S. Eliot, believed that Shakespeare never did any real thinking to write but wrote upon inspired thoughts given to him by the imperial muse of poetry.

Poetry is an art, and in my opinion, the greatest of the fine arts and the hardest in which to reach true perfection. The true poet must be genuine, who has faith and confidence that his work will do something to the world and the society he lives in. Poetry deals with the emotional intensity in mankind. It‘s a more sophisticated art in writing that comes from the poet‘s heart by a higher sort of creative imagination. Prose, on the other hand, deals with the external intellect. It‘s more lucid and scientific form of expression. It is a more analytical and comprehensive style in formal writing. It enables man to see things more clearly, whereas poetry lies in obscure images beneath the surface of things that can only be comprehended by eyes within our mind‘s eye. Poetry is philosophy locked in symbolism and magnificent imagery. In closing, poets are important in every society because their prophetic words of wisdom will live on after they are gone.

    Praises for Immortal Love Songs

Rev. Cecil, as a Pastor, has been confessing his love for Christ and the spiritual values of Christianity, for his entire Church career. This new collection confirms his belief that giving and receiving love is the greatest human value. They are not conventional poems but more like lyrics which demand to be set to music and performed in Christian as well as secular settings. Many of them remind me of the simplicity, directness, clarity and devotional energy of hymns.

Gideon Cecil captures both the heart and the ear in his romantic musings. In bold style Cecil re-establishes the territory of the masters in his rhythmic and rhyming pieces. Here is a book of poetry worth investigating.

‗‗Cecil's Inspiring Collection of Poems: ‘Immortal Love Songs’ is a rich and sensuous response to the natural landscape of his native Guyana and evokes an idyllic and peaceful atmosphere, perhaps as a way of countering that country's well-known problems. His poetry is an accomplished art, deserving of wider attention.‘‘

    – The Editors, POUI:Cave Hill Journal of Creative Writing University of the West Indies,

    Cave Hill Campus, Barbados

Rev. Cecil‘s poetry conveys a great spiritual mystery. The poems refer to an invisible, or unseen, presence that inspires the poet and guides his philosophy. He distinguishes this presence from God Himself. Rev. Cecil‘s poetic works enchant with their fine rhythm and precious images. As the things of poetry stand in for starker truths, Rev. Cecil‘s poetry is an extension of his calling as a minister. He opens the veins of Heaven and catches the dew of eternal promise. He unfailingly testifies to the symbolic nature of the world and its literary flourishes without pretension or the decorative wordplay so much contemporary poetry employs. He uncloaks the finery of life and nature. These poems are enduring testaments to beauty and hope.

    Introduction

MMORTAL LOVE SONGS by Gideon Cecil is a collection of

witty words that soulfully ignites the spirit of it readers with the

essence of life leaving a lasting impression in their hearts.

This collection opens up with the simile of the kiss of a departing sun

and the falling in love of a darkening sky with a shimmering horizon in

Immortal Beauty. The author writes about a lover who walks in beauty

and her beauty is like poetry of which love is her songs.

In the poem ―A Library In My Mind,‖ the author made an inexcusable

impressive question of thought, he asked

Why do I write like a man in love with a woman but falls in love with words as my true love? Page 19

Gideon Cecil has painstakingly yet joyfully imprints eternal words in

this collection and these poems bears witness that literature plays

significant roles in Christianity. In the poem ―Christ Is the Same‖ the

author was able to capture the entire message of the gospel revealing

the purpose of Jesus Christ and God‘s intention for humanity.

Jesus came to die for all, He invaded my soul and gave me a call. Jesus gives me hope to live, He is the only one who can forgive. Page 26

    Immortal Beauty

The departing sun kisses her lips as the darkening sky falls in love with the shimmering horizon stretched across the sea. A flock of white seagulls looking like fallen clouds spread their broad wings, seeking out silver mullets in the water. I search for her smile as the moon climbs the roof of the clouds like a yellow cat on the bark of a slender tree.

    She walks in beauty

The soft wind plays a violin in her hair, Her compelling eyes draw me near. Her immaculate contours inspire my poetry, Her scarlet lip kisses me intensely. She sailed her boat in the ocean of my soul, She comes back on Valentine‘s in winter‘s cold. I am in love again as my muses‘ foretold, With her immense beauty my eyes behold. Mesmerize me my darling for our love to grow, Let the skies fall into our hearts in her azure glow. She walks in beauty on the sea shore sand, She is the sea waves kissing the golden land. Empower me with your love Oh my Valentine! Kiss me with your scarlet lips to forever be mine.

Love in my tea Send me a cup of tea, Your tea taste like the salty sea. Send me Christmas love, Kiss me sweet like the doves above. Send me a ray from the sun, Your beauty is a gorgeous fun. Send me flowers at dawn, You are a beauty that is born. Send me a cup of coffee, And fall madly in love with me. Send me your elegant face, Your love is full of grace. Send me a kiss in the wind, Your love always blows my mind. Send me your captivating heart, Kiss my lips and never depart. Come tie my heart like a vine, Your lips taste like Italian wine. Let's rejoice my love and dine, You will forever be mine. Send your kisses in a cup of tea, Your heart sings like the pristine sea. What's my love to you when you are far away? Our love was born in the month of May. Your heart is into mine everywhere I go, Our love is like an immortal tree that grows. No wind or storm will ever blow our love away. Our love is a divine union as we kneel to pray.

    Her beauty is like Poetry

You are like the brilliant sun rise at dawn, Your immaculate beauty inspires my poetry. You smile like the full moon in the pristine beauty of the night Your sacred eyes are my mesmerizing delight. Sit like a queen in your elegance and grace, Your hair is like a flowing stream cascading down a mountain And now you are like the beauty of the rainbow fading away from me in the placid afternoon as the sun sets over a blue mountain.

    Love is her songs

She sings to me in the placid night, Sweet love songs under the moon light. She slept away under the crying stars, I think of my love like the stars very afar. I watched the horizon falls in love with the sea, Verdant trees sing of my darling and me. The rumbling sea is coming again to shore, My lover is gone she is coming back no more. A black cloud of rain breaks the morning silence, I think of my awesome lover from a distance. The sea is resting on her golden shores again, A flock of seagulls playing in the soft- tropical rain. I walked the cold seashore contemplating my life, Will I ever find a patent and affectionate wife? Life is just a waking dream in the theatre of our minds, We are on an arduous adventure that will soon decline. The engine of the sea brings her back again to me, As my perpetual sweetheart to fulfill our destiny.

    The Poet

The poet is a philosopher writing divine mysteries from a world unknown to mankind. The poet is an instrument of words given to him by his muse beyond the compulsion of his finite intellect. He writes in obscure images and symbolism even to fool his own intellect; he utters great and immortal philosophies which he himself cannot comprehend. He is the ocean but not the ocean; he is just the living wave singing his love songs on many shores of the ocean going and coming until his soul return to Thee. The poet is a noble soul born into this world to sustain a divine task given to his soul since before his birth.

A Library in my mind I have a fantastic library hidden in the camera of my mind a thousand egrets playing on the sea shores of time my muses bring my words like a shower of rains into the soul of my pen to write words of philosophy in the images of my poetry. My mind sees a library where my muses live and comes to me to write of times past and generations to come. Why do I write like a man in love with a woman but falls in love with words as my true love? My poetry is a very powerful expression of love, its impact can be felt far and wide in the deep rivers of your heart. coming from an unseen library in my soul by my muses beyond the wings of the skies. My poems are pictures of your dreams written on the leaves of your soul, plant my words in the river of your mind; read my poetry to forget your blackberry phone explore my words in the river of your mind; my words are a library of my soul contemplating -contemporary poetry

    Hunger

Children die from hunger in the streets I watch them die my heart faint to beat. I heard a sudden cry in front my gate, My tears in blood I lost my faith. A little child begging for beef was killed by a car, His soul snuffed out like a fading star. Poverty and hunger caused his sudden demise, The rich man hides from the poor in elegant disguise. A war is raging for the hungry bellies every day, We closed our eyes and walked away. We live for ourselves and forget the destitute, In our sophisticated apparel we are living brutes. I see hunger all over this globe, We hide our wealth under our robes. We invests billions to manufacture missiles, And forget the starving mother and her child. The half-educated asses rise to rule in power, While half the world die in hunger every hour. Hunger is man‘s last plague I see every day, Let‘s eradicate hunger for them to live today.

Weeping Flowers We weep like flowers from the terrorist blast, women and children souls are like drifting stars hidden in the windows of the clouds. A mansion is prepared for innocent souls that are lost. Mankind is dreaming terror and faint to pray. We are just a fading dream on this stage of life; you see me today but tomorrow I am like smoke that‘s blown away in the wind. Life is made up of adversity and prosperity learn to fly like the hawk and soar in the skies. and watch your problems blown away in the wind into the eternal memory of the sea. Our life is just like a clock on the wall It ticks and stops, we die and fall. Our souls are like the wind coming and going like the waves of the sea. Then we are drifted like the clouds away on our eternal voyage into eternity.

    Hear me when I call

Hear my prayers my God on High, Take me away beyond the skies. Let me see your magnificent face, Take me away from sins and disgrace. Hear me my God when I call, Grab me like an eagle when I fall. You are the breath of the placid wind, You are my love breathing in my mind. Extend my days on earth to do Thy Will, Teach me to love as you watch me still. Hear my prayers when my heart bleeds, For the poor and destitute to help in need. Bless me to help those who are in sorrow, Wipe away their tears as I pray for a glorious tomorrow. Invade me like the sea waves in my soul, Teach me to love you in the heat and cold. Hear my prayers for every race and nation, Save their souls by your love and salvation.

Love not this world you see

We are just seeds of God on this earth, Our souls are lent to us at our fragile births. We can make a name and get earth‘s fame, Then death comes as a thief that‘s God‘s game. The beauty of her face will deceive your eyes, You loved her sincerely and she soon dies. Trust your love to the God above my friends, You will exchange your life that has no end. We shall see a Dante‘s Paradise or a Hell, Death will come to us all to toll his bell. Death is not the final end in our tombs, Paradise has many of our eternal rooms. Live in love and forsake mortal vanities, Love not this world that‘s full of immorality. There is a hell to shun and a heaven to gain, Don‘t lose your soul into the perpetual fiery rains.

    A hymn of hope

I hear your footsteps near my door, I thirst for your love my God on high. Give me constant hope to live before I die, I follow your foot prints on the sea shore. You are the Christ walking on the sea, Come into my heart for me to love Thee. You conquered Newton‘s Laws of gravity I see, You are the Alpha and Omega of eternity. I see you watching me as I write tonight, Lead me to thy throne of your divine light Cleanse my heart from sins and jollity. Inspire my words to live on into posterity. Raise me up from death like Lazarus of old, Your love to me exceeds silver and gold.

    My Words

Keep my words my love even after death, You will live again with poetry in your breath. These are words from my muses on high Words from heaven‘s library beyond the skies. Bury my words in the garden of your soul, Its love medicine to you my eyes can‘t behold. I will fail to give you material prosperity, These words shall live on perpetually. Watch me from your window in the dew, The moon tells me to be always in love with you. The moon is dreaming in my heart about you, You immaculate beauty is born among a few. Keep the words of this poet on Valentine‘s Day, These words will sustain you my love if you pray. A silent wind is singing a new song among the trees, A song that tells me you are passionately in love with me.

    Christ Is the Same

Christ is the same, How sweet is his name? He died on a rugged cross, To save this world that is lost. He was the chosen, whom God had raised, He came as God‘s son Who fought the game and won. Jesus came to die for all, He invaded my soul and gave me a call. Jesus gives me hope to live, He is the only one who can forgive. Christ is the same when I pray, He gives me hope to see a new day. He came to save this world from sin, He will change your soul from deep within. Open your heart to receive him today, Because he wants to save your soul and show you a blessed way If you will receive him into your heart and keel to pray.

    Bell

I sat by my bedroom window and heard the church bell toll, This bell that is tolling is tolling for you and for me. I heard the sea waves coming and crash suddenly on the Georgetown sea wall, then I heard the church bell toll and gave me a silent call. I watch the gorgeous flower smiling at dawn and suddenly at noon the sun bites her and she dies and fall. So is man‘s destiny on this earth, we are like a fragile flower that appears vivacious in the young sunlight then suddenly we are the last toll in a ringing church bell. This bell that is tolling is tolling for me and you my friend; for you and I to kneel and pray for God to guide our souls in the end.

This world shall be gone In the dead night I see horses galloping in the skies, A chariot stood before me and a man said Jesus is coming before you die. I wondered at the vision and saw a man giving me some great books, a sudden sound in the heavens caused my soul to cry. The stars were fallen and the moon faded away, I knelt by my bed and started to pray. A new heaven appeared before my spiritual eyes, This world shall be gone like a storm for you and I to cry. Like a sudden tempest we shall be here no more, When the trumpet of heaven shall sound on that hour, Men‘s heart shall fail them like a fragile dying flower. This world shall pass away like the cruel storm Sandy, The ocean shall be gone and men shall live in calamity.

    Weary Soul

Invade me with your love O Lord when I am alone, My soul is weary when I see corruption all around me. The wind is coming from afar with a silent rain, My heart is bleeding for lost souls blown away like smoke in the dusty wind. The world is like a dead tree sleeping over a lonely road, Men are like leaves blown away into a busy stream. My heart is broken like ice in a transparent glass, The world burns away like fire burns dead grass. I see a fading rainbow dying over the sea, And the world fades away like her lost color of a fading memory. The rainbow dies and the moon comes alive for a new night to be born, The wind is tired from a long journey across many lands, My soul is weary like a tired flower in the mid-day sun. Life is just a dream like the rainbow that comes and goes, I am like the weary sun that shines as the wind blows. The weary trees are sleeping as the night dreams away, For a new day to be born for my soul to kneel and pray.

    Heaven’s Touch

Touch my heart O God when I fail you, Forgive my sins and make my heart new. I am longing for your love to invade my thirsty soul, I shall bow to you my God in summer‘s heat and winter‘s cold. I long for your touch like a last wave in the sea, I crave to hear your still soft voice whispering to me. Touch me again for my pen to write of your eternity, Steal me away my God into your land of immortality. I dive into your ocean to search for you in prayers and devotion, You spoke to me again to stir my sweet emotion. You are the great I AM who writes for me again, Write this new book of verses and heal my heart‘s pain. The world crave to read your divine words in my poetry, I call you my divine muse who writes inside of me. I give you praise and thanks for the gift you bestowed on me, My poetry shall lead lost souls to a land of immortality, Into a world of bliss where they won‘t have need of money. The sea will sing and the wind will blow, Only your eternal touch will cause my soul to grow.

    Dreams of Life

A still sun is dreaming in the skies, The soft wind is kissing her eyes. Her love for me is hidden in disguise. Love is just a dream full of surprises. Life is a mixture of sunshine and rain, We dream today tomorrow we suffer pain. We love in the morning and part at noon, Oh what a fictive love we display so soon! Learn to love, laugh and rejoice today, God will guide your soul if you pray. You read my poetry today; tomorrow I may be gone, I am like a fragile flower dying slowly at dawn. Follow your dreams and never despair, Be like an eagle towering without fear. Life has many lessons you will learn, Lessons of love, faith, and despair that‘s why we are born. We gain the world today; tomorrow we die, We lose our souls to hell then we cry. Live a life to please God before you die, Our souls are like smoke vanishing in the skies. Her love is like the sea waves coming and going, My heart is like a ship always sailing. God‘s love for us is a wind always blowing, His eternal love is like a tree always growing. I have an eternal dream where things will never fade, In God‘s kingdom where all things were made.

Dreams of Eternity I walked among smiling flowers in my dream, And saw great souls rejoicing in immortality. I perceived a new world in the eternal camera of my eyes, a world of immortal bliss where things will never fade. I saw a brilliant light engulfed my soul in my dream, I saw my soul fly away like a bird into a land of eternity I walked among the dead that‘s now alive, I saw those who passed from this world and now lives into a land of divine bliss. I saw the rich and famous burning into Hell‘s eternity, And the saved souls rejoicing into heaven‘s rose garden, I wonder at the touch of the divine light all around me I bow down to pray when I heard heavens angels sing. I long for your touch O Lord, when the doors of my soul shall be closed from this sinful world I live in. I came as a stranger among my loved ones, They knew not my soul that lived among them. I felt your presence next to me O Lord when I write your poetry, For eyes to read of your immortal hands

I walked in my dreams to many different lands, Like an angel my soul flew back to me, I heard the wind whisper and the sea sang her songs of immortality, I felt the teeth of the sun bit me on my back for me to rise from my dreams and live again into mortality. Life after Death The river merges with the ocean, The wind kissed their waves in A sweet emotion. The dark rain clouds smile at me, In the silent wind that whisper over The sea. The wind sharp tail blew a hawk, Into the sea, A shouting wave stole the hawk away From me. The lonely flower tree weeps at the cruel sea, I see life and death crawling all around me. We are like the hawk fluttering under the skies, We are just dust alive in mortal disguise we see. You see me but it‘s not the true man you see in me, You see my physical self that housed my soul you cannot see. I see the sea sleeping and waking around laughing trees. I see men dying every day going home on their new journey, The rich, famous and poor die but they cannot take their money. Life is a mortal and immortal journey we all will take some day, It‘s a voyage we must take when God‘s almighty hands Takes us away. I see the sun rises but I shall not rise one day, I hear the sea whisper a new song for us to pray.

When the flower shall be blown away In the dust, And we shall leave this world of lust We shall meet again like the river meeting The sea; we shall meet and part into immortality. Life is just a vision we see on this mortal stage, Then the vision fades away and we write a next Chapter on a new page. I live and die and shall see you again when we meet, We meet, part, and meet again on a golden street.

A Brilliant Morning The Amazon macaws are talking in the green forest, The monkeys in the trees are taking a rest. Cows are grazing in the verdant pasture, The snake rests on a tree in her immaculate composure. Two young doves are resting on a branch, They kissed each other in a divine romance. The wind is singing from a distant land, The parrots are talking a language I cannot understand. A lovely deer gallivants around a silent river, A chattering monkey thinks the deer is very clever. The deer sensed her victims and jumped over a hill, She runs away from her enemies before she gets killed. A garden of flowers smiling besides a lonely black water creek, The green Iguana sits on a branch looks so elegant and meek. The earth looks green by the sun‘s brilliant glow, I watch the earth rejoice as her green tree grows. God is laughing at his immaculate creation, The wind is crying at man‘s confusion. A brilliant morning I see every day when I pray, Learn to live in love and you will see a new day. The old year is gone and a new year is born, Learn to forget your sorrows that are already gone. The day is brilliant because my mind looks to the future, Your mind can be your friend or your enemy he is your only true teacher. When your mind is strong you will conquer your fears, You can fly like the eagle and forget your cares. The wind is coming like the sound of a trumpet, A new day is born you will never forget. A day of our eternal destiny when Jesus comes again, Jesus is coming again to deliver us from our pains.
