• GOS is a type of prebiotic, made of chains ofgalactose, which is derived from the milk sugarlactose.

• A prebiotic is a soluble fibre which humanscannot digest. Instead it is used as food for thebeneficial bacteria (e.g. probiotics) in the gut.

• Prebiotics provide 2 main benefits:

1. Supports the growth of ‘good’ bacteria in thegut(7, 12, 16, 36).

2. When prebiotics are digested by gutmicrobiota, they make other nutrients, suchas short chain fatty acids which supportgut cells(4, 22, 30) and help with mineralabsorption(34, 36).

• Can help to modulate aspects of the immune system, including growth of whiteblood cells & some immune signalling molecules(13, 40).

Lactoferrin:One of the largest proteins found in milk, usually making up 1% of Whey Protein.

This protein is naturally bound to iron, giving it a distinctive pink colour.

Lactoferrin has strong antioxidant properties(3), and can provide protection against certain fungal, viral or bacterial infections(5, 17, 21, 32, 34).

It does this by binding with harmful molecules or micro-organisms to:

Damage them e.g. breakdown their cell walls(9, 32)

“starve” them of essential nutrients(2)

Send signals to trigger an immune response(6, 31, 33)
