Sports and Dream A Dream
• Founded in 1999, Dream A Dream is an NGO that works with children from vulnerable backgrounds by developing Life Skills.
• Enhance the lives of ?? Children through programmes like Creative Arts, Sports, Adventure Camp, Mentoring and Learn IT.
• Dream Sports - Football and Rugby (518 children in the Football and 150 children in Rugby)
• Works on a partnership model with professional sports academies providing coached twice a week.
• Children not only learn the sport in a fun and engaging environment albeit also develop critical life skills such as team-work, creativity, problem solving, self-awareness, etc.
Impact Assessment • The current Life Skills Assessment Tool designed by two U.K.
based psychologists Dr. Dave Pearson and Dr. Fiona Kennedy.• Derived from the WHO definition of Life Skills.• We measure impact both quantitatively and qualitatively.• Quantitatively – Life Skills Assessment tool.• Qualitatively – Collecting stories of change. • The Life Skills Assessment Tool – is a structured questionnaire with
a 5 parameters and 5 point scale.
The 5 parameters are:a) Interaction
b) Overcoming Difficulty
c) Taking Initiative
d) Resolving Conflicts
e) Understanding instructions
Process of Impact Assessment
• When- 3 times in a year: Baseline, 1st Term and End term.
• Who – Dream A Dream employees. (Field coordinators, Programme coordinators or managers)
• How – Through the observation of the child during a session.
• All employees are trained on how to use the Life Skills Assessment tool before they are sent out on the field.
• Coaches and Volunteers do not do the assessment at this time.
Difficulties with the LSA Tool
• Under Staffed• Need for better training and more in debt explanation on the 5
parameters.• People assessing the children are mostly ones who have not been
interacting with them on a regular basis.• Different assessors for the same batch.• Lack of qualitative data.• Different people collecting the data and different people entering the
data.• Lots of mandatory fields to be filled in the form sometimes ignored.
The Way Ahead…
• Develop a new model independent of service partners.• Hire and train coaches on life skills and how to use the LSA tool.• Collect data only twice a year.• Start batches only twice a year.• Conduct a more intensive training for all staff and stakeholders
involved.
Thank You!
