    With the passionateleadership of Mayor GeneMalibiran of the said town, aLeadership training Seminarfor Samal Youth Leaders wasconducted last March 10,2012 at the Fort Morong Re-sort in Morong Bataan.

    At least 100 SK lead-ers, out-of-school youth lead-ers, and other youth leaders inthe municipality were chosento partake in the one-of-a-kindleadership development pro-gram which was organizedunder the Youth DevelopmentProgram of the municipality.

In theprocessing of learnings ses-sion, the youth leaders hadrekindle their commitment todedicate their time in helpingbuild Samal in particular andthe country in general.

    OES DinalupihanCampus, after summa-

    rizing the results for thebarangay surveying ofneeds, presented the re-sults to the officials of ba-rangay Santo Nino in Di-nalupihan on January 26,2012. This activity intendsto involve the local au-thorities on the planningand delivery of exten-

    sion programs in the saidbarangay. The result ofthe survey reavealed theneeds of the respondents

    on livelihood programs,especially for women. It

    was also revealed in thesurvey the fairly big num-ber of unregistered chil-dren in the barangay. Dr.Perla B. Estrella, ES Asso-ciate Director for Dinalu-pihan and Ms. AnalissaOconer led the prepara-tion of the survey results.Extension programs of

    the university undergo thesame procedure beforedelivering programs to tar-get communities.

    The Englisgh tutorial les-sons and read-a-thon pro-gram of the DinalupihanCampus has continued toanother leg this year asthe campus successfullyconducted the said activ-ity in Santo Nino Elemen-tary School, Dinalupihan.

    The project wasled Mrs, Loida Garciaand facilitated by forty(40) BSE (English) andBEED students who are

    all members of the Englishand literature LanguageAdvocates (ELLA).

    The program wasconducted on January 9,12, 13, and 26, cater-ing a total number of 328pupils. This program hasbeen an annual programof the OES Dinalupihanthat addresses the Eng-lish language needs ofelementary pupils in Sto.Nino Elemetary School.

    Book Donation at Cityof Balanga High School

    A book donation programwas conducted at the Cityof Balanga High Schoollast May 25, 2012 aspart of the commitment ofthe university with the Gigand the Amazing Sam-

    paguita Foundation, Inc.(GASFI). The said foun-dation partnered with theuniversity since last yearto propagate its mission todisseminate reading mate-rials all over the country.

    In a world wherestressors has fast becom-ing the sources of minorand even major illnesses,the BPSU Orani Campusconducted a Stress Man-agement Seminar onMarch 12, 2012 for par-ents of children in Alika-bok Elementary School,

    Orani, Bataan.It was the secondtime that Orani Campussponsored a stress man-agement program forthe said barangay. Ms.Khristina Ann Dimarucut,a psychology instructor inOrani Campus, served

    speaker in the seminar at-tended by 38 individuals,mostly parents of school-children in Alikabok. Ms.Dimarucut was assisted bythird year BEED students.There were sharing of par-ents experiences relatedto stresses during the openforum conducted to cul-

    minate the half-day activ-ity.Gifts in the form of

    school supplies and read-ing materials were givenaway to the participants.The said program wasproposed by Engr. YolandSimbul, the campus Deanof Instruction.

    To address the re-curring reading problemsamong elementary school-children in Alikabok El-ementary School, Orani,Bataan, a remedial read-ing program which ben-efitted thirty-five Grade IIIpupils was conducted in

    the said school on Febru-ary 10, 2012.The project was

    led by Dr. Felicisima V.Tungol and assisted byThird Year Bachelor in El-ementary Education stu-dents, which was headedby Ms. Lenie Grace deJesus. Mr. Mario Victoria,the newly-installed school

    principal facilitated thesmooth conduct of the pro-gram.

    Apparently, theschoolchildren who ex-perienced the remedialprogram provided a verypositive reception that thegroup of extensionist in-tend to expand its remedi-al reading program fromkindergarten to grade VI.Parents were present inthe said program to get in-volved in the remediationprogram.

    The February 10remedial reading programwas followed by anotherprogram on February 17

    in the same school, cover-ing Fourth Graders duringthis time. On March 2,2012, Grade One pupilswere targeted to benefitfrom the said interventionprogram. The same teamof student volunteers fromthe BEED III of the said

    campus participated inthe conduct of the success-ful program.

    On March 13,2012, the said projectteam conducted the sameremedial reading programin Paraiso ElementarySchool in the same town.Selected 35 pupils in thegrade three level were

    chosen to benefit for thesaid program, mostly pre-identified as slow readersfor them to maximize thebenefits of the remediationprogram

    Remedial readingprograms are used to helpstudents who are not read-ing on grade level. Theyare designed to assist stu-dents having learning dif-ficulties and/or who havemissed key components ofreading instruction. Theyare geared more for stu-dents who are considera-bly behind their peers thanthose who are only slightlybehind their peers.

    The project targeted only theadopted barangays of theuniversity as only a few can

    PMMA BENCHMARK BPSUEXTENSION PROJECTS

    Extension staff and officials from the PhilippineMerchant Marine Academy (PMMA) in Zambales vis-ited the University Office of Extension Services lastApril 19 to benchmark extension projects conductedby BPSU. Mr. Arnold L. Pasamba, the Extension Di-rector of PMMA consulted Dr. Elizabeth A. Joson on

    the recent extension projects of the university. Strat-egies on linkaging with various organizations andlocal government units. Dr. Joson showcased theuniversity extension projects over the past five years,focusing on the four thrusts of extension: agricultureand natural resources, engineering and technology,social and behavioural sciences, and health and re-lated sciences. Mr. Pasamba commended the univer-sitys extension programs for it comprehensivenessand strategies implemented.

    For the first time in the extension programs of the uni-versity, a professional development training programwas conducted last May 9, 2012 for the benefit of theofficials and members of Katarungang Pambarangayin the town of Orani, San Simon, Dinalupihan andBarangay Bliss from Balanga City.

    Lupong Tagapamayapa ofeach barangay. Specifi-cally, the project aimed to

    train the members of ka-tarungang pambarangay inthe basics of the Philippinejustice system; understandthe Legal, Philosophical andOrganization Aspects of thekatarungang pambarangay;discuss the various best prac-tices on Lupon Administra-tion; discuss the basics of Ju-risdiction and Venue, Cases

    Cognizable of the KP Law,and Procedures in DisputeSettlement/KP Forms; andprovide basic Human RightsEducation among membersof the katarungang pamba-rangay. The project, pro-posed by Dr. Elizabeth A

    In its continued pursuit to propagate the visionand mission of the Gig and the Amamzing sampagu-ita Foundation, Inc (GASFI), another book donationactivity was conducted by the GASFI-BPSU Unit lastMarch 27, 2012 at Bani Elementary School in Bal-anga City.

    Five boxes of reading materials were turned

    over to the school principal Mr. Ramil Cobales. Stafffrom the University Library Information Services (LIS) inthe person of Mrs. Francisca Llamzon. Mrs. JosephineTanciongco, and Ms. Marissa Dulce Cruz were pre-sent during the event.

    They provided insights to the school teacherson how to organize and store the books properly. Amini-program with lectures on the importance of read-ing was conducted through the discussions led by Dr.Elizabeth A. Joson and Mr. Nomer N. Varua.

    LOW-COST BUT NUTRITIOUSFOODS TAUGHT TO PARENTS

    BS Hotel and Restaurant management studentswere able to come up with recipes that are low inbudget but high in nutrition. These kinds of recipes areimportant in todays world where family budgets forfood are getting tighter and tighter every year. Withtheir new invention in the classroom, Mrs. Bernadeth

    B. Gabor thought of disseminating her students dis-coveries to parents and come up with a communityprogram that provides free training to parents to pre-pare such recipes. On March 23, the program cameinto realization. More than 30 parents from BalangaCity attended the cooking demo program where theylearned how to come up with classy meals from cheapingredients. The project was sponsored by the Collegeof Arts and Sciences THRM Department.

    PERSONNEL The BPSU Orani Campus commenced the Ac-

    ademic Year 2012-2013 with a stress managementseminar for both teaching and non-teaching person-nel held last June 6, 2012 at the BPSU Orani CampusHostel. The physical and psychological enhancementseminar was intended to arm the participants withidentifying the potential sources of stress and how tomanage, control, or prevent them.

    Campus Psychology instructor Ms. KhristinaAnn Dimarucut served as the lecturer covering thetopics Eustress, distress, and Stress. The talk was fol-lowed by an informative discussion of Mrs. Digna

    de Guzman who discussed the causes of stress andhow to transform a negative stress into a positive one.Campus Director Rudy Flores, Technical CoordinatorMrs. Caridad S.     Provincial Council on Dis-ability Affairs, BPSU partnersfor team-building project

    The Provincial Council on Disability Affairs(PCDA) tapped the services of the university in con-ducting a team-building seminar for the employeesand staff of the said office under the Provincial SocialWelfare and Development Office (PSWDO). The eventwas held at La Vista Inland Resort, City of Balanga,Bataan last March 13, 2012. Dr. Perla B. Estrellaand Dr. Elizabeth Joson served as the resource speak-ers in the said capacity-building activity. Dr. Estrelladiscussed the psychological and social dimensionsof groups and working with groups. This provided aclearer view among the participants on how groupscan work together successfully as one directed towarda unified goal of empowering the differently-abled inthe province. Dr. Joson, on the other hand discussedeffective collaboration with teams to facilitate successin the targets of an organization. The University andPSWDO have been working together for years in vari-ous areas of social concerns.

    teamwork, friendshipAfter the successful conduct of team-building ac-tivities for officers under the Provincial Council on Dis-ability Affairs (PCDA), another identical program wasconducted last March 23, 2012 at the Sinagtala Re-sort, Orani, Bataan, this time, for the officials and em-ployees of the Provincial Council for the Protection ofChildren, which is also under the umbrella of the multi-awarded social services arm of Bataan, the ProvincialSocial Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).

    The team-up of Dr. Perla B. Estrella, Dr. Eliza-beth A. Joson and Ms. Lady Fatima Dianco discussedthe principles and concepts of leadership and team-work, the dynamics that make it successful, and thesteps to take to achieve a collective goal as one or-ganization. Mrs. Marilyn Tigas, PSWDO Head Officerand adviser of the PCDA and PCPC, was grateful forthe contribution of the university in the undertakings ofthe PSWDO.

    therapeutic massage training

    Seventy-five (75) Barangay Health Workers(BHWs) of Samal town were trained on Basic Thera-peutic Massage in a collaborative project between theUniversity and the Local Government of Samal. Thetraining, which was conducted last March 21, 2012

    at Casa Generosa, Samal, Bataan, was facilitated byMs. Leslie Jorge, an instructor in the BPSU College ofArts and Sciences and a certified masseur. All partici-pants were trained for eight hours and were given thechance to practice their newly-acquired skills throughthe resident-volunteers who received free massage thatday. The university and the LGU of Samal have beenclosely collaborating in various social projects benefit-ting mostly the youth, senior citizens, women and thosein the agriculture and fisheries sector.

    (ELLA), the campus association of Bachelor in Second-ary Education major in English students, together withits faculty adviser Mrs. Loida Garcia, sponsored anEnglish Remedial Teaching and Read-a-Thon TutorialLessons for the school children of Santo Nino Elemen-tary School.

    The program commenced last August 31, 2011and was closed out on March 2, 2012. The seven-

    month program had a two-fold purpose which was topupils in the depressed areas improve their readingcomprehension skills and motivate them to enjoy read-ing. Parents and teachers were highly involve in theconduct of the said activity, with the schools Parent-Teachers Association taking the lead in collaboratingthe organizers. At the end of the program, the pupilsskills in reading has significantly improved as revealedby the reading evaluation conducted by theproject team. p7

    GIS WORKSHOP AT MAAPDr. Elizabeth A. Joson. Ms. Monette Rodriguez,

    and Mr. Nomer N. Varua attended the First Philip-pine Association of Extension Program ImplementersInc.(PAEPI)-sponsored National Workshop on Geo-graphic Information System held on March 31 at theMaritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP).The said workshop aimed at training the participantson the use of geographic mapping for research andextension. Dr. Alejandro Tongco, a GIS expert fromthe Oklahoma State University, USA served as trainerand resource speaker. The PAEPI is the countrys larg-

    est network of extension program implementers basedat MAAP, Mariveles, Bataan.

    Basic Emergency Responseand Disaster Triage TrainingBatch 3 was conducted lastJanuary 31, February 6, 7,13, 14, and 20, 2012 in-side the detention facility. Thepurpose of the training is toprovide individuals with firstresponse tasks the knowledgeand skills necessary to assess,

    treat and transport patient sickor injured as a result of anemergency or disaster. Thecourse was led by Mr. RonaldTyron dela Rosa and was as-sisted by Dr. Edgardo Suberiand Mr. Aristotelle Quilanausing the interactive lecturemethod (ILM) of instructionthat is objective based, perfor-mance oriented, tested, andhighly participatory. The expe-

    rience of the instructors wereenriched by the interaction be-tween the participants. Interac-tive lectures and demonstrationpractice sessions are used topresent the course content withexercises and written evalua-tions used to assess participantlearning. A total of 44 inmatesin the said facility benefitedfrom the training. The coursewas ended with an emergency

    scenario in which the traineeshad to independently solve theemergency situation on theirown. Mrs. Verzonieta Iguicoand Mrs. Imelda Hualda, Clini-cal Instructors in the College ofNursing and Midwifery servedas evaluators in the scenario,who gave the trainees passingmarks for successfully perform-ing the task.
