The year 2020 will long be remembered as one like no other with many of our community directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The effects on our community both socially and financially saw the Xavier College Foundation give a great deal of thought to its activities in 2020, both in terms of managing our investments in turbulent times, and how best we could support our families in need.

After lengthy discussions and consideration it was decided to proceed with the Inspiring Excellence appeal. A request for support in keeping with the 2020 College Theme of ‘Looking to the Good First’ knowing a number of our families would face financial hardship and the ongoing costs associated with paying school fees.

I now extend my sincere gratitude to all supporters of the Xavier College Foundation in 2020 with over $270,000 raised. This was a wonderful result and on behalf of the Foundation Board we thank you.

The Xavier College Foundation was indeed fortunate to be the beneficiary of two substantial bequests in 2020. The first from the late Margaret Littledale Tutton, which will provide up to fifteen new scholarships and bursaries. We thank Mr Peter Walsh, Trustee for the Tutton and Ryan Trusts for his continued support. The Tutton and Ryan families have been major supporters of the Foundation and the College and a comprehensive article is in the latest edition of Xavier News.

The second bequest from the late Margaret Ann Dooley, whose husband the late Dr Brian Dooley (OX 1944), had a long association with both the Foundation and the College. This bequest will go towards building costs and maintenance.

Unfortunately, we were unable to hold our Donor and Laurels Mass and Cocktail Function or our Laurels Society Luncheon this year, however we hope, all going well we will be able to have these events in the second half of the year and will look forward to welcoming you back.

Shane Healy, Executive Director, completed his first year and on behalf of the Board I would like to thank him and his staff for their continued support of the Foundation.

The Foundation Board, Investment Committee and Advancement Committees together with the dedicated work of our Foundation and Community Engagement team members are committed to the work of the Foundation and the philanthropy of the wider Xavier Community.

In a year that saw our community in unchartered territory due to the coronavirus, I am pleased to say the Xavier Foundation and all at the College were humbled & overwhelmed by the generous response of the Xavier Community to our annual Inspiring Excellence appeal.

Many in our community were impacted greatly by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. With this in mind, Christopher Callinan, Chairman, Xavier Foundation, reached out to our community asking if they could help in any way. Such help would certainly ensure families directly affected would benefit in the form of bursaries. The focus was squarely on our current students and their families and I am pleased to say you gave generously with over $222,000 raised. This was an extraordinary outpouring and we congratulate and thank those of you that contributed.

The Class of 2017 makes contributions to the Leavers Bursary whilst many of you choose to continue to support our other programs such as the Indigenous Bursary, Heritage Buildings, Benevolent Fund and our Library campuses whereby a further $28,000 was raised for these projects.

The Class of 2016 continues its contribution toward the Class of 2016 Bursary raising just over $20,000 again this year. This is a wonderful result and they are fast approaching their target of $250,000 to make this bursary in perpetuity.

The total number of individual donors in 2020 was 321, with 55 of these from new individuals who had never given to the College before. With donations spanning from $10 to $25,000, every contribution was significant, and all will help in enriching the lives of current students and creating opportunities for new ones.

As I thank you all again for your generosity, I am reminded of St Ignatius’ Prayer of Generosity which surely resonated with our whole community in a difficult 2020 for all of us.

Behind the Scenes

Whilst the coronavirus pandemic saw the College closed, students learning remotely and many of us managing the art of working from home, our Investment Committee was working hard behind the scenes managing the Foundation’s investments.

Led by Foundation Investment Chair, Paul Ferla, his Committee of Patrick Cody (OX 1983), Ben Dalling (OX 1990), Anthony Garvey (OX 1978), John MacKinnon (OX 1990) and Andrew Polson (OX 1990), they worked tirelessly to ensure the investments of the Foundation were in a sound position. I am pleased to say this was achieved.

The addition of the Margaret Littledale Tutton bequest in September 2020 of $14,373,059, saw the Ignatius Education Fund corpus increase in value from $7,355,417 to $21,716,166. By the end of December 2020, the Committee had achieved an increase of the funds invested to $24,422,956.

The Endowment Fund corpus was valued at $18,412,304 at the 30 June 2020. By the end of December 2020, the Committee had achieved an increase of the funds invested to $21,587,293.

It was pleasing that in a difficult year, the Foundation was able to make a distribution to the College of $1,247,000 from the Endowment and Ignatius Education Funds.

We thank Paul and his Committee for their commitment to the Foundation, their ongoing support and hard work to ensure the best results for the future of the College.
