IMPACT REPORTFY2016&FY2017IMPACT REPORT

Moving forward through innovation and collaboration.

That was Northeast Arc’s focus for 2016 and 2017. It is the theme that continues to guide our efforts today.

We have embraced the fact that we can do more when we collaborate and partner with other people and organizations. The Shared Living residential option we have been offering for years has become a preferred model with our state funders. We are grateful for the nimbleness of our team and for the caring providers who have come forward to offer this option more widely alongside our high quality group community and independent living models.

With your support over the past two years, we expanded our business enterprises including our inclusive shredding operation at 27 Garden Street in Danvers and our Breaking Grounds Café at 67 Main Street in Peabody. We launched a campaign to build a Black Box Theater to provide new options for creative expression and paid work. These enterprises, along with our other employment programs, provide the men and women we support with the opportunity to earn minimum wage or better while developing career paths that meet their goals.

Thanks to the extraordinary $1 million gift announced in FY17 by Marblehead businessman and philanthropist Steve Rosenthal, we created the Changing Lives Fund. The Fund gives us the opportunity to work hand in hand with exceptional peers to promote dramatic change. We are always looking forward, and what we see ahead is awe-inspiring: the opportunity to make kids with autism spectrum disorder water-safe; to train medical professionals to best support patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities; and to harness the natural supports around adults with disabilities to maximize their independence through supported decision-making.

These activities are all guided by our new strategic plan. They are a reflection of our shared values, which are to: Embrace inclusion. Act with integrity. Innovate and Collaborate. Celebrate achievement.

Thank you for your continued support on our journey to change lives and discover abilities each day.

Northeast Arc changes lives for people with disabilities — and children at risk of developing them — and their

families. For decades, we’ve been providing employment training, education and supported

employment opportunities for adults with disabilities through programs like Heritage Shredding.

We also have a mobile workforce that can assist your company with short- and long-term projects —

and we can help you find and hire qualified and skilled employees.

Your Support Changes Lives!Arelis O’Neal Luke Heller Marc Darisse

A talented and creative art lover, Arelis participates in Northeast

Arc’s Discover and Design program. She is an accomplished artist and shows her work in the gallery at

the ArcWorks Community Art Center in Peabody.

In 2017, Arelis’ job coach, Angela Gonzalez, (Arelis participates in our Supported Employment program, too!) invited her to co-create a

mural as part of the Salem Mural Slam. Over the course of just one

weekend, the two painted a 72-inch by 42-inch mural that won

the People’s Choice Award at the Slam.

Arelis participates in the Artists Together program at Montserrat College of Art. She is a graduate

of Northeast Arc’s Project SEARCH work readiness program at Salem

State University, and is also enrolled in S.T.E.P., our Skills Training Exploration Program.

As a baby, Luke was not reaching essential milestones and was diagnosed

with developmental delay and low muscle tone. At the suggestion of a

neurologist, Luke would need intensive early intervention services. In the time

since, he has been diagnosed with an extremely rare gene mutation,

with only 8 reported cases in the world. As a result, his cognitive and physical

developments were significantly delayed.

In his mom, Jody’s words, working with NeArc’s Building Blocks

early intervention program was “pivotal” — changing not only Luke’s

life, but that of the entire family. Therapists helped Luke reach

important milestones like responding to his name and pointing for things

he wanted.

Since he aged out of the Blocks program, Luke continues to work with a Northeast Arc ABA behavior therapist who has “given him a voice” and made

it possible for his family to communicate with him.

Marc is a shining example of what determination can accomplish.

In 2017 he was awarded an Individual Achievement Award from NeArc for his outstanding self-leadership and tireless efforts to address behaviorshh he felt were holding him back from

achieving his goals.

Marc is an employee of Heritage Shredding, and his job is very

important to him. He has days when his overall production average

is 100%! He consistently shows initiative in learning new tasks at the company, like running the baler.

He is courteous with customers and co-workers, takes great pride in

ensuring he’s dressed professionally and that the shop is orderly,

sweeping his and others’ workspaces.

It has been amazing to watch Marc’s confidence grow and to witness his determination in achieving the goals

he has set for himself.

Molly Shea Peggy Danahy Ryan Horrigan

When Molly’s internship at our First Steps Childcare Center ended,

it took no time at all to realize we couldn’t let her go. Molly was hired

as a Teacher’s Assistant at the Center and six years later,

she’s still at it!

Enrolling in Project SEARCH gave Molly the opportunity to expand

her job readiness skills, and experience a variety of internships

on the Salem State University campus. That led her to the two other jobs she holds,

working at IT’SUGAR and in our very own Residential division

doing office work.

If you think she rests when she’s not working, think again!

Molly is a frequent and enthusiastic participant in our Recreation

programs. She regularly attends our Friday Night Happenings and

Saturday Outings, and knocks ‘em down in our Monday night

bowling league.

Peggy joined Northeast Arc’s Residential program in 1993, after living 27 years in a nursing home. Initially, she struggled greatly in her new situation, as institutional life was all she knew. Ultimately,

with the support of her staff, Peggy was able to thrive both at home

and in her day program.

In 2016, Peggy joined our Shared Living program, moving into a

family’s home in the community. There she has excelled, bolstering her communication skills, learning to cook and help with chores, and taking responsibility for the care

of the family dog.

In 2017, Peggy was awarded an Individual Achievement Award in recognition of the great strides she has made in building her

confidence, empowering herself and becoming a stronger advocate for herself by asking for what she

wants or needs.

We’ve had the privilege of watching Ryan grow up, having served him in our Autism ABA program as a child, followed by The Spotlight

Program in his teens. He was one of the stars of the thoughtful and honest “Autism Through My Lens,”

a documentary created in collaboration with Emerson College.

Now a 22-year old man, Ryan is flourishing in Northeast Arc’s Independent Living program.

As someone who does not need 24/7 support, he was the perfect candidate for our Linden Street Suites. From day one, he’s had

success in increasing his independence with the help of a

Northeast Arc Life Coach.

He also knows how to rock a runway! Ryan was one of the

fabulous models featured in our An Evening of Changing Lives

fashion show in 2017, and he was a crowd favorite!

The revitalization of downtown Peabody continues with the

construction of the Black Box Theater, located in Northeast Arc’s ArcWorks Community

Art Center at 22 Foster Street.

The theater will provide employment opportunities for people served by Northeast

Arc and for local actors, musicians, set builders, ticket sellers and concessions workers.

It will be available for rent to various performing arts groups, private functions

and other events.

The Black Box Theater will provide educational and recreational opportunities for

as many as 7,800 youth annually, including those served by our Spotlight social skills program.

Peabody’s Black Box Theater

The City of Peabody is in the midst of a major revitalization project for the downtown, and Northeast Arc is pleased to have taken a leading role in that effort. This unique partnership was borne from the City’s desire to make the downtown

a true cultural destination, and Northeast Arc’s desire for inclusion and opportunity for all. Introducing Breaking Grounds Café and the Black Box Theater!

The Changing Lives Fund was established at

Northeast Arc through a generous donation of

$1,000,000 by Marblehead philanthropist

Steven P. Rosenthal.

The fund is fueling The Arc Tank and

Steve’s quest to support innovation and positive disruption in the field of

disability services.
