The UNA Alumni Association hosted the second annual Lions Under the Lights and it was another night to remember. Lions Under the Lights is an exclusive fundraising event that showcases alumni, students and local business. Thanks to the sponsors, chefs and dedicated supporters, the event raised $9,500 which supports Alumni Relations projects throughout the year.

Dear Alumni & Friends,

On behalf of the Foundation Board, I want to thank each of you for your support of the University of North Alabama. As members of the board, we hold this institution very near to our hearts. To see UNA supported by this dedicated group of volunteers, as well as by all of our alumni and friends, is truly inspiring.

We understand the trust you put in us to make sure we are good stewards of your money, and we take that trust very seriously. We’ve worked with Debbie and her team over the past year to make enhancements that will make the Foundation function better and continue to serve the institution in a way to make you all proud. That’s what we’re here for — to help this amazing University succeed.

We are continuing to work toward the campaign goal of $35 million, and I’m hopeful our community will continue to step up to ensure UNA remains strong. We are a big contributor to this area (creating an economic impact of $316 million for Colbert and Lauderdale Counties), but we make an even bigger impact on the students who grace this campus. We hope to provide them with better facilities, programs and scholarships, and we cannot do it without your support.

Let’s all continue to work together as we bring our University to a higher level.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dear UNA Family and Friends,

This has been another impressive year for the University of North Alabama Foundation, and we have

many generous donors to thank for that. I sincerely appreciate the generosity shown to this institution. We have had a very successful year as evidenced by the amount of money raised and alumni engagement opportunities experienced.

I am also pleased your gifts are truly making an impact. At the end of the University’s fiscal year, which was September 30, 2017, we raised $33.2 million on our way to a goal of $35 million for our “Build the Pride” comprehensive campaign. This past year has seen a significant increase in money raised from the year prior, as momentum has grown and more alumni have been touched from our campaign efforts.

Gifts and pledges for the 2016-2017 year totaled $8,753,000, made by 2,775 donors collectively. This represents a financial increase over the year before of sixteen percent.

UNA’s annual Derby Day was once again a successful fundraising

event for the Foundation, raising over $121,000 for the 1830 Fund.

The first annual Day of Giving was held November 2016 in which $41,000 was raised through social media efforts within a 24-hour period. Our first Faculty and Staff campaign was held fall of 2016, with 49 percent participation.

Regarding the UNA Foundation, total assets under management grew from $36.8 million in 2016 to $41.6 million in 2017. In addition, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention scholarships, as this is central to what we do. I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that we have added 10 new endowments. This brings our total endowment pledges and gifts to $980,098 for the fiscal year.

We recently completed work on Phase 2 of the HSHD building in downtown Florence, which houses the Connie D. McKinney Department of Human Sciences, Hospitality, and Design. This phase completed the culinary demonstration studio, as well as many classrooms, studios, and labs on the second floor.

New plans for Laura M. Harrison Hall have been completed, and construction will begin soon. Once complete, Harrison Hall will be the new home of the Anderson College of Nursing. Both projects are largely possible thanks to the generosity of the Harrison and Anderson families.

In the College of Business, we’re using endowments to provide our students with new experiences.

Studying abroad or working hands-on as part of an entrepreneurship/innovation program are the exact skills our students need to make it in the real world. We were excited alumnus Robert Steele came forward with a signifi cant donation to UNA for the naming opportunity of the “Steele Center for Professional Selling.”

The College of Arts and Sciences has moved forward with a feasibility study regarding music facility renovations. As part of the comprehensive campaign, President Kitts asked that we work to renovate and expand our music facilities so that it better refl ects the quality of the programs we offer. This new study will allow us to move forward with those plans.

The Investment Committee of the UNA Foundation takes seriously its charge of reviewing the management of its funds on a regular basis. Included in best practices is an annual audit by an independent fi rm, which remains positive.

The UNA Foundation recognizes that the future of the University of North Alabama is in good hands with President Ken Kitts, a dedicated faculty and staff, a vibrant student body, and a Foundation board full of committed volunteers. These leaders are constantly working to leave this institution better than they found it—and for that, I thank them for their continued support.

Roar Lions!

Mary Filiatrault’s UNA story has a unique twist in that she attended the University for one semester as a freshman before transferring to a larger DI university, only to discover that UNA was definitely the place for her to thrive. Mary realized the personal relationships she developed with faculty and staff in conjunction with a small classroom setting provided a more personal learning experience which caused her to transfer back to the University the following semester.

A junior from Hartselle with a double major in French and German and a minor in global studies, Mary is a student with great passion for learning and is currently studying Mandarin Chinese in addition to the languages of her major. She aspires to become an interpreter who works with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Mary’s interest in her career path developed at a very young age because of the culture her immigrant grandparents incorporated into her childhood. She has fond memories of growing up in a household that helped shape her into the person she is today.

Mary discovered at the age of 13 that she had sensory nerve damage especially affecting her feet which are numb to the touch. This could have presented barriers for her, but instead she used it as a catalyst to begin twirling and to participate in a number of sports. Mary is currently an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences and president

of the University French Club. She serves as the captain of the UNA Pride of Dixie Majorette Line and coaches high school majorettes at several schools in the surrounding area.

Mary enjoys working with people from all walks of life and has a high interest in diversity. The scholarship which she receives through the marching band has allowed her to continue her education and her public service with peace of mind that her financial needs are being met. Mary believes that she owes her success to the teachers, students, and donors who have encouraged and aided her on her journey to higher education.

Tyler Joyner considered a number of colleges when trying to determine where to continue his education and athletic career after graduating from Jefferson Davis Community College. While this was not an easy decision for Tyler and his family, two main factors played into his decision. The first factor was that UNA offered him a full baseball scholarship as well as additional academic scholarships to help with additional expenses. The second reason Tyler chose the University was to pursue a degree in engineering technology.

Tyler, a native of East Brewton, has always had the desire to become an engineer and the University offers a wonderful opportunity to fulfill that ambition. He knew there was no way his family could afford the full cost of college, but scholarship opportunities made a four-year degree a reality. Tyler said that the University has allowed him to grow and expand in ways that he never believed were possible. He learned the importance of work ethic and self-discipline while being a student athlete, earning many athletic awards including the 2017 Bob Stephenson Award. The award, created in 2013, is presented to a team member who has contributed to the program on the field and in the classroom, showing great

character, accountability and loyalty to the UNA baseball program.

While baseball is important to Tyler, he values the opportunity to pursue his degree, and has a 3.55 grade point average to show for his hard work. According to one of his professors, “He exemplifies everything a student athlete should be.”

Tyler said that UNA has been a dream come true and he is forever grateful for the opportunity to become a UNA Lion.

Heidi Pham left her home in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, at 18 to come to the University—a shy young woman who spoke broken English and had trouble looking people in the eye as a result of her insecurity. Four years later, she is fluent in English and maintains a 3.87 grade point average and is looking forward to a career in accounting. She works part-time in the International Admissions office and has made many friends.

Heidi’s personal courage and hard work have served her well, but she also credits the guidance, help, and encouragement she has received from faculty and staff at the University, especially in the College of Business. Heidi was undecided when she first came to the University but in her first accounting class her instructor Mrs. Amanda Barksdale wrote on her first exam, “Heidi, have you ever considered accounting as your major? I see potential in you!” Heidi took her advice and majored in accounting, a decision she said she has never regretted. Heidi said that she could never list all the professors and staff who have helped her along the way.

“As students, I know they look after us. They were there to give me encouragement and help when I needed them most. They believed in me first, so now I am able to believe in myself.”

This semester Heidi is receiving four different scholarships: Academic Excellence Scholarship for International Students; Frances P. and James C. Barber Endowed Scholarship; Melvin Moody Koonce Endowed Scholarship; and the Walter M. Campbell III

HEIDI PHAMSTUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Endowed Scholarship. There is a misconception that international students who can afford education in the U.S. must come from wealthy families: that is certainly not true in Heidi’s case. Her mother and father both work from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., six days a week, to pay her out-of-state tuition and international fees. Because they realized how important it is for their children to have a better education in a developed country, they are willing to work hard so that their children can succeed.

Heidi said that U.S. immigration laws prevent her from working more than 20 hours per week, and she is not allowed to work off-campus, so she is especially grateful for her scholarships. “The scholarships I have received from donors mean a lot, not only to me, but also my whole family,” she said. “Thanks to them, our financial burdens are lighter. I cannot use words to fully express my appreciation for their generosity and kindness.”

Dear Mr. Martin,

I would like to express my gratitude for the generous gift you made to the

University over twenty years ago endowing the Eminent Scholar Chair in

Entertainment Industry. This has been a powerful legacy that has made a

difference for students and faculty. Your generosity has made it possible

to have a faculty member who could be solely devoted to developing and

Dear Dr. Brown,I am extremely honored to have been chosen as

a recipient of the Alberta Doss Gore Endowed

Scholarship. I am a fi rst-generation college

student, and I am in my senior year in the

Anderson College of Nursing. I have a passion

for nursing in diverse populations, particularly

public health, mental health, and a global

decrease in maternal and infant mortality rates.

This scholarship is making it possible for me

to embark on my senior year without taking on

more student loan debt.

I am very grateful for your contribution to my

college career and my life. This scholarship is

empowering me and your seed of generosity will

not stop with me as I will be giving back to the

society that is shaping me into a great woman

and a powerful force for good.

Thank you again for funding my education, for

enhancing my commitment to nursing, and for

nurturing my zeal to give back to the world.

Sincerely,Precious Jimbola

ALYCE DOSS BROWNAlyce Doss Brown began her nursing career early in life and was rewarded with her fi rst tools of

the trade, a toy nursing kit, when she was six years old. She continued her love of nursing and made it her calling, attending Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) where she graduated with a B.S. degree in nursing. To fulfi ll the requirements and ensure quality nursing knowledge, skills and care, Tuskegee sent their nursing students to hospitals and states where they could practice their skills and enhance their knowledge. Alyce did clinical studies and rotations in New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and Brooklyn, New York. Upon graduation from Tuskegee Institute she worked as the fi rst African-American Charge Nurse with a B.S. on the Psychiatric Unit at Chicago’s prestigious Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Alyce was employed at the Colbert County Hospital (now Helen Keller) as one of the fi rst African-American Charge Nurses with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Working at Colbert County was a homecoming for Alyce, who was born in Tuscaloosa but moved with her parents, the late Rev. and Mrs. J.A. Doss, to Tuscumbia when she was three years old.

She worked for a short period of time as an industrial nurse for the Tennessee Valley Authority then returned to work for Helen Keller Hospital. She was employed by Florence State College when the college began the fi rst Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in North Alabama in 1973. Brown was told that the college was looking to start the program and was in need of a person with a degree in nursing. She is fond of saying that at the time, “Nurses with B.S. degrees were as scarce as hen’s teeth!” She was the fi rst faculty member hired at the beginning of the program.

She pursued and completed the master’s degree and then her doctorate.

Dr. Brown retired from UNA after 38 years of service. This was not, however, her last year of working. She joined a group of retired professors who opted to work an additional year after retirement and donate their salary to the University. She was the fi rst woman to join the Isbell Scholars and the only African-American at the time to join the program. Dr. Brown has designated three endowed scholarships: one of which is designated specifi cally for African-American or black students in nursing; one is based on need rather than solely academic standings; and the last one a general scholarship for any student enrolled or applying to the nursing program in the amount of $25,000.00 each. Her goal is to promote and assist quality healthcare professionals.

Upon her actual retirement, Dr. Brown had given more than 55 active years of service to the nursing profession.

THANK YOU

ISBELL SCHOLARSDR. RAYMOND ISBELL, a native of Colbert County and a 1953 graduate of UNA, joined the faculty as an associate professor of chemistry in 1965. In 1973, he was named head of the department of chemistry and served in that capacity until he retired in 1997. He then donated a year of service to his department to establish a scholarship at the University. Many employees inspired by Dr. Isbell’s generous act have since volunteered to remain in their job after retirement to establish additional educational endowments.

IS YOUR NAME MISSING?

The Honor Roll of Donors contains names of individuals who have made gifts to the University of North Alabama between October 1, 2016, and September 30, 2017. There could be several reasons that your name does not appear in what you believe to be the appropriate giving level—or not at all:

1. You made your gift either before October 1, 2016, or after September 30, 2017.

2. You gave more during this period than you realize: your name may be in the next giving level.

3. You made a pledge instead of an outright gift. If you made a pledge between October 1, 2016, and September 30, 2017, but chose to begin fulfilling it after September 30, 2017, your name will not appear in this honor roll, which reflects only gifts received.

4. If you are a corporate sponsor for Athletics and are recognized through advertisement opportunities.

If we omitted your name in error, we would like to hear from you. If you have questions or corrections, contact the office of Donor Relations and Prospect Management at 256.765.4861.
