From 1914 -1919, WW 1 erupted in Europe
This “Great War” was the largest, most destructive
war the world had yet seen
WWI was a global war that altered the course
of the 20th century
Militarism = a nation’s armed forces come to dominate a country’s national policy; a glorification of the military and war itself.Alliances = treaties in which each nation involved pledges to defend the other if attacked by an aggressorImperialism = domination by one country over the political, economic or cultural life of another country or region. Nationalism = strong pride and patriotism in
one’s nation• In terms of WWI, nationalism became aggressive
which led to international tension.
German attacks on Allied merchant ships• Sinking of the Lusitania
Propaganda
"Make the World safe for Democracy”
US trade with allies
Zimmermann telegram
The” spark” that started WWI
On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austria Hungarian Throne, was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist who believed that Bosnia should belong to Serbia
Great war was believed to be the War that
would end all other wars….
• Do you believe this to be possible?
Why or why not?
VerseJohnnie get your gun, get your gun, get your gun,Take it on the run, on the run, on the run,Hear them calling you and me,Ev'ry son of liberty.Hurry right away, no delay, go today,Make your daddy glad to have had such a lad,Tell your sweetheart not to pine,To be proud her boy's in line.
ChorusOver there over thereSend the word, send the word over thereThat the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming,The drums rum-tumming ev'rywhereSo prepare say a pray'rSend the word, send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over,And we won't come back till it's over over there!
VerseJohnnie get your gun, get your gun, get your gun,Johnnie show the Hun you're a son of a gun,Hoist the flag and let her fly,Yankee Doodle do or die.Pack your little kit, show your grit, do your bit,Yankees to the ranks from the towns and the tanks,Make your mother proud of youAnd the old Red White and Blue.

fighting where both sides build deep
trenches as a defense against the enemy. • "No Man's Land” - land between the two enemy
trench lines
• Led to a stalemate
Life in the trenches• unsanitary and full of disease.
• Muddy from weather
New Weapons:Machine guns TanksAirplanesZeppelinsTorpedoesChemical gasses
In your opinion, which of these weapons caused the most destruction during World War I?
WARM UP: Based on yesterday’s reading, respond to the following in your notes:
1. “Another way to put it is that the machinery of war expanded much more rapidly than did the capacity of human beings to control it; it got out of control.” What did Professor Winter mean when he said that?
2. What were examples of the new weapons and how were they so deadly?
3. What were the effects of the chemical gases used in the war?

When the war began in 1914, America remained neutral (not taking sides)
Over time, Americans begin to change their mind • German attacks on Allied merchant ships
• Sinking of the Lusitania
• Propaganda
• Zimmermann telegram – final straw
Americans joined their European allies in
1917
The US troops helped turn the war in
favor of the Allies
On November 11, 1918 the Germany
surrendered
Armistice Day (Veteran’s Day)• Laying down of arms
An idealistic plan- means it couldn’t really happen
Big Points• End German U-Boats in the sea
• Restore countries that had been destroyed
• Allow imperialism ONLY if countries were okay with it
• Disband large armies
What it didn’t do• Make a plan as to WHO would pay for the war damages
• Punish Germany
- Europe was in shambles- over 7 million dead and over
$1.5 TRILLION in debt
- Who’s going to pay for the war?
Created the League of Nations• Made up of 42 nations• Goal: to provide a forum for solving international
problems• Trying to prevent another world war- EPIC FAIL!
Punished Germany• They would pay reparations- cost of damages• They would lose all the land they had conquered• Their military would be dismembered • This would set up for Hitler to take power!
