South East Asia• Plantation Agriculture (sugar,

coffee, cocoa, rubber, tropical fruits)

• Dutch East India Company – Control most of Indonesia island chain (Dutch East Indies) 1/5 land used to plant cash crops

• British – Singapore (busiest port); Malaysia; Burma

• French = Vietnam• Siam (Thailand) only one not to

fall to imperialism

United States • Philippine, Puerto Rico, Guam

(Spanish – American War 1898)

• Hawaii- 1790s = sugar plantations

(75% Hawaii’s wealth)- Queen Liluokalani = tried to

regain power from American planters

- Annexation = 1898 Republic of Hawaii

products• Monroe Doctrine 1820s- US monitor trade - “hands off” policy w/Europe• British trade manufactured

products for raw materials• Very dependent on Foreign trade • Wealthy landowners rise to

power• Needed manufactured goods

Legacies of Imperialism • Migration Movements- Europeans in search of cheap

labor & better economic opportunities

- Indentured servants = Asia/Africa – went to tropical lands planters still needed with decrease in slavery (spread culture and traditions)

- Ethnic communities form = Chinatown
