Implementation Of IUCN Guidelines By National Committees and International Policies

IUCN National Committee
The IUCN National Committee was formed in March
2014 based on a decree issued by the Chairman of
the Scientific Research and Technology Academy.
The National Committee is formed of 15 members
representing concerned parties, as follows:
• The Ministry of Environment – Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA)
• Ministry of Foreign Affairs
• National Research Centre
• Faculty of Science – Cairo University
• Faculty of Science – Ein Shams University
• Faculty of Science – Tanta University
• Faculty of Science – Mansoura University
• Faculty of Science – Damietta University
• Faculty of Urban Planning – Cairo University
• Marine Sciences and Fisheries Institute
• Biodiversity Experts
• Arab Office for Youth and Environment (AOYE)
1. Establishing cooperation with relevant national, regional and international
agencies concerned with conservation of nature
2. Exchange of experience, reports and studies to maximize the benefit.
3. Linking to the existing initiatives on the national, regional and international levels.
4. Identifying challenges and opportunities based on biodiversity priorities of
Egypt.
5. Conducting socioeconomic assessments to set priorities and to propose
practical solutions for urgent biodiversity issues
IUCN National Committee Work Plan
• IUCN Work Plan for North Africa 2013-2016 and the
role of the National Committee to be actively
involved.
• Prepared a proposal submitted to the Scientific
Research and Technology Academy on conducting a
study on "Deep water in the Mediterranean"
• Forming a team to assess the current status of
biodiversity in Egypt in accordance with the Red List
and endangered species.
• Establishing a website to be updated regularly on
biodiversity and nature conservation in Egypt.
Issues Discussed during the National Committee Meetings
• Establishing a national base on wild and medicinalplants.
• Presenting and discussing the outcomes anddecisions of COP12 held in the Republic of Korea,October 2014.
• Discussions on the impacts of invasive species inthe east of the Mediterranean.
• Following up on Egypt's membership fees.
• Establishing new partnerships and providetechnical assistance with Bibliotheca Alexandrina inthe new project entitled" Encyclopedia of Life".
• Active participation in the North Africa RegionalForum held in Cairo, October 2015, which discussedthe IUCN work plan 2017-2020.
• Prepared a full proposal on preparing on a project entitled "Wealth ofEgypt" similar to the "Wealth of India".
• Cooperating with the Nature Conservation Sector, EgyptianEnvironmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) in preparing the economicassessment studies on Ras Mohammad and Wdi El Rayan Protectorates.
• A Memorandum of Agreement to be signed between the ScientificResearch and Technology Academy and the Italian Research Cooperationto implement joint projects and activities.

On the National Level
- Founder and Chairperson of the Arab Office
for Youth and Environment (AOYE) since its
establishment in 1978.
- It is considered one of the most active
Egyptian NGOs working in the field of
Environment and Sustainable Development
on the National, Arab, African,
Mediterranean and International levels.
AOYE implements its activities through a
comprehensive environmental action plan that has
economical sustainable approach; offering
integrated services and activities towards the
environment protection and conservation, capable
to provide full enabling to its beneficiaries.
On the National Level
National Coordinator of the GEF/ Small GrantsProgramme (SGP) in Egypt since 1992. SGP embodiesthe very essence of sustainable development by"thinking globally acting locally".It provides financial and technical support to projectsthat conserve and restore the environment whileenhancing people's well-being and livelihoods.As Senior NC, provided assistance to other Africancountries to join the SGP.Most implemented SGP projects (50 Projects in the BDFocal Area) are in line with the IUCN Work Programme.
The Nile Basin Discourse (NBD) is a
civil society network with over 850
members and partner organizations
within the Nile Basin region.
NBD offers a public platform for
dialogue, partnership and
cooperation among civil society
organizations in the Nile Basin.
On the Regional Level
Africa
Nile Basin Discourse (NBD)
NBD network provides knowledge and builds capacity
to strengthen the voice of civil society organizations
within the Nile Basin region. NBD’s networking
approach has added value to the work of the Nile
Basin Initiative (NBI) and other key development
partners. The NBI is a major intergovernmental process
driving forward joint sustainable development and
resources management within the Nile basin.
General Coordinator, Arab Networkfor Environment and Development(RAED) since its establishment in1990, with more than 270 NGOsmembers, mostly from Arabcountries in north Africa.RAED participates as an observerrepresenting civil society in theCouncil of (CAMRE), and the ArabWater Ministerial Council, in whichissues of conservation, climatechange, biodiversity and water,regional are fully discussed.

AOYE is the Arab speaking representative of
the Mediterranean Information Office for
Environment, Culture and Sustainable
Development (MIO/ECSDE) in Athens,
Greece.

(H2020 CB/MEP)"
H2020 CB/MEP aims to enhance by operating
within the existing and developing policy
instruments, and supporting the implementation
of the commitments undertaken in the framework
of the European Neighborhood Policy as well as
other regional agreements such as the Barcelona
Convention, while cooperating, coordinating and
synergizing with all relevant Mediterranean (EU
and other) programmes.

• Provide guidance to all African members on the
overall development and implementation of the
Union’s worldwide policies and programmes.
• Provide input to the Council on the interests,
priorities and needs of the IUCN African
Members.
• Act as IUCN’s ambassador to advance the
interests and mission of the Union and to
promote its services in Africa
• Develop and maintain regular contact with the
members in the Region to keep them informed
on the work of IUCN globally and in the Region.
• Promote the IUCN Mission and Programmes
• Mainstream nature conservation into the
national Sustainable Development strategies
and plans, within the context of the SDGs and
Climate Change Agreement.
• Focus on public awareness and capacity
building of Members concerning biodiversity
and conservation of nature.
• Strengthen the role of IUCN National
Committees
• Facilitate the dialogue and partnership among
the national committees in Africa
• Encourage new memberships in the Region• Assist in fundraising and resource mobilization for IUCN, both globally
and within the Region, highlighting the importance of effective
partnerships.• Continue the efforts to replicate the successful experience of the Egyptian
Sustainable Development Forum (ESDF) through initiating similar bodies
in African countries.• In OP6, SGP Egypt will adopt the landscape approach, which could be
replicated in Africa.
