“Connecting People to Jesus and
December 2013
Implications of the Incarnation of God’s Son Tim Erickson, Sr. Pastor
In one of his last talks with His inner circle of disciples, Jesus handed his ministry off to them – and indirectly to us, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (John 20:21). The book of Acts shows how well the first church grasped their identity as missionaries for Jesus. Everywhere they went, they witnessed! But it’s easy for established USA disciples today to blunt the edginess of our missionary identity. So what does it mean to be sent like Jesus was sent? Certainly it entails sharing our faith by serving our community. Rather than waiting for people to come to us, we are called to go to them.
“The time has come for us to look one another in the eye and admit that the world at our doorstep is staying away from the church on purpose. They avoid us intentionally. People in our neighborhoods do not sit down for dinner on Sunday evening surprised by regret because they forgot to go to church again. Increasingly, this post-Christian culture perceives the church as more than irrelevant. We are often seen as part of the problem.” (Gary Mayes, DNA of a Revolution, p. 43)
At Advent and Christmas we commemorate the birth of Jesus. “But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.” (Galatians 4:4-5) This month our worship services will be designed to help us more fully catch and appreciate the implications of how Jesus was sent. He came because we need a Savior. Instead of waiting for us to come to Him – which was and is impossible on our own – he “moved into the neighborhood” (John 1:14, The Message). Today, even though Jesus is physically absent, he touches lives and communities wherever we, his disciples live!
